Right then, its long overdue that i did a readers ride thread for the Escort which my other half lovingly calls The Scab. This is how it looked when i bought it off pogweasel about a year ago. Clean enough to look at, 7j minilights, XR3 seats, lovely. Lets motor . Oh yeah, it had a hole in the floor which nick pointed out to me and it looked like it was gonna need new sills soon but I wasnt really bothered about that. So I used it till the tax and test ran out then i parked it on the drive while i pondered what to do with it.

Cut to six months later and nightmares starts whispering that might want to sell his cresida. 'I'll swap you me renault 19' I said. After he recovered he implied that he might be interested in a swap for the escort as he wanted something to haul parts about in. 'Righto' says I 'I'll run it round for an mot and see what it goes down on. It shouldnt need much.' Famous last words. Why do mot testers always smile before they give you bad news? To cut a long story short it was a bit rotten. Mainly inner and outer sills but the more i dug the more i found. So the deal with the cressy was off and i was stuck with a decision to make. Either I cut my losses and scraped it, whacked it on ebay as an mot faliure that needs 'slight attention', or i bit the bullet and took on another project that i didnt need, don't have room for and cant really afford. So i bought some grinding discs. This was the N/S inner sill. A bit further down. Yes thats a seatbelt mounting point You used to get a lovely breeze come up through that hole. Kinda primitive air con ;D

New inner sill roughly snotted into place. This strengthening section took me ages to do. Mainly because i knocked it up first time round welded it in then decieded it looked cack so i cut it all out and replaced it with this much nicer looking repair... Then i welded the outer sill on thus keeping it out of sight for at least the next ten years. Still, at least i know it looks good ;D On with the new sill and its starting to look car like again. I did the same thing on the O/S but for some reason i didnt take any pictures. It wasnt quite as bad as the N/S anyway and only took about a week of evenings to get done. This is the floorpan section i knocked up. I'm not very happy with this and might re-do it before the cars done. At the time i was rushing to get the car finished for CARS but that never happened and now i've got time i my side i'm gonna try and get it how i want it.

Being a bit of a tightwad i decieded to have a go at repairing the front wings rather than coughing up for new ones. Bits of scrap metal were located from the foor and cut roughly to size. It might have worked too, but i changed my mind and thought that if i'm going to do it properly the wings would need to come off to repair the bulkhead and strut tops. So out came that grinder again. Thats about it so far. I'll put up pics of the bulkead, strut tops and front panel once its all done. In the mean time this is what it should look like once its all done. And i'll be sticking this under the bonnet. It should go quite well on the 1300 gearbox and axle ;D I'm hoping to have it done for next years CARS fingers crossed

Excellent skillz0rs DickD! I'm really pleased that you've persevered with the owd Wagon. I loved it to bits, but even mending the hole in the floor was causing me bum-flapping. Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

that looks awesome mate! brings back memories from my childhood cos my mum had 2 estates (think they were mk2 1 an r reg 1 a v (sorry not great on my old fords))
i also used to go to erith oil seed works delivering a lot, and someone there had a lush one in the works car park, it was a sort of pastel green with yellow stripes and rs wheels (i think). i always meant to get a picture of it, but never did

Right then. Being an old ford i don't need to tell anyone that the strut tops were rotten. In fact they were so rotten that someone in the dim and distant past had had to patch them up in order to keep it on the road long enough for me to get my grubby hands on it. Of course they didnt cut any of the original rot out first or apply any rustproofing so all the repairs did was give the rust a lovley dark damp hole in which it could breed and grow and eventually take over the whole car. This is the kind of thing i was looking at when i cut the n/s wing off. This is actually the o/s one but if you stand on your head the effect is the same. So we cut some of the rot out. Then we cut a bit more out. I think i got all of it... Oh no. Look over there! Anyway, i repaired the bulkhead and got to wrk making up some plates to repair the top mount. And then i hit the wall and lost all enthusiasm for a few months and decieded my time would be better spent lowering my merc and listening to the beatles.
