This is my little 1976 Hillman Imp calesuperluxe - thats what i call it anyway. Started life as a standard car when i got it about 18 months ago. First thing was the disc brake conversion and a set of minilites, xr2 seats (back to standard now though) and twin carbs and 'sport' exhaust system. I ran it like this for a while and got fed up with the carbs, so a 28/36 weber was purchased and it runs that instead. The exhaust system was a bit ropey and i had a HG failure, this chucked water in the exhaust, when i started the car after fixing the engine, it blew the baffles out the silencer. So a bike can was sourched off ebay and we modified the fanimold to fit it across the back, nice and loud! the car got some 'monte carlo' springs - lower and harder - although not low enough, ive decided. At this point it was the 5th or 6th engine in the car and i was geting fed up - i bought an engine that was known to be a good runner - a +60 thou engine (915cc) and it goes jolly well indeed. Right now its in the middle of having a head built for it, and I'm not sure what induction to do yet possibly fuel injection - possibly webers, any ideas? The cars had a full respray as well in the original honeygold mettalic, although i spilt brake fluid on the bonnet, time for satin black Right now its in the middle of having a front rad conversion - hard when its also your daily driver but its coming along well. (seted in place for now - until tomorrow...) I'm hoping to have it all done and ready for the CARS show - it will be there, just not sure of its state yet as it has a few 'bodywork issues' . . . I'll keep the thread updated... A few more pics...

Wasnt this red one by any chance? Hes a friend of mine who is studying in bristol at uni. As for my car - i did some more today, only a little bit... Hole for front rad - i removed the heater blower and am going to duct air through these 2 holes rather than a huuuuuuge gap laft by the whole box as everyone else does... And this is the core of the rad through the hole from the front of the car... And i used this to cut it out... And i placed my swir pot in to see how it fits - glove comes to mind... Hopefully more tomorrow. I should be getting my pipes to run from rear to front and the flexibles then start messing about with that, or i will mount everything at the front properly and sot it all out. As its my every day car i have to get it all in place then swap the rads over in one hit. No worries, a mazda shaped change of plans (non retro though - a 323f : is on the cards so my car will get loads of attention then. EDIT: the red one now has alleycats, has the superlites on the rear so it can fit on the RR.

Would make sense as I'm sure hes from solihull, and being the summer hols etc. No updates on my car today, unfortunately i spent most of my non working day driving round peterborough like a tw@ trying to find some hoses, no luck. look on demon tweeks site and they have them - samco so it will cost me about 40 quid for the three hoses i need! Hopefully more luck tomorrow.

The plan was to get up at 8 this morning, i was still up at 4 so thought id see it through - no chance, alarm woke me up anyway at 8 so i got cracking. Made some more holes in the front andmoved the horn... Then marcus came round... And we made more holes after taking the tank out... We then went and got some yorkshire fittings for the copper pipes, these were a right curse word to do but i got one done, i think ill get some shaped flexi hose instead now... When we got back there was a note, parcel force had ried delivering, went and got the bits from the post office... Nice reducing samco hoses, mmmmmmm, expensive... I then got bored of that job as the pipes were slightly more than p!55!ng me off! So i welded up a subframefor my bucket seat instead... All of this in about 5 hours work! not bad i don't think... More tomorrow, hpefully i can find some flexi's FAO BLOWNIMP : WHERE DID YOU GET YOURS? ? WHAT ARE THEY FOR AND WHAT ID?

Ive decided to go the soldered route with my pipes as i spent the money on the parts, the pipe ive done will easily hold 20-25PSI without any leaks so should be okay for the car. Getting them in the car once they have been soldered is a different matter, you will see tomorrow And you wont belive it! Tomorrows jobs: Remove engine and change the clutch, repair coolant leak from thermostat housing (if this didnt need to be done the clutch would stay put, its just a pig to get to the stat) Make up the other coolant pipe and fit into the car in my special way Purchase some hose clips and fit all the hoses and pipes together properly. Mount the rad properly. Find an appropriate place to fit the swirl pot and mount it. retorque cylinder head after recent HG change. Refit engine, fit electronic ignition and tune it slightly. plumb all the pipes into place and go for a drive, wishing for the best! This is a target, not a promise for the amount of work. Stoppage time for beer will not be included in the whole time ;D

good luck mate, iv just been for a small blast in mine, and it actually works I'm as amazed as a very amazed person. Still a busy day tomorrow though. It sucks that you cant run on slicks at the pod, ah well the yokos are gonna get toasted for their first outing. As for your thermostat housing have you tried jacking up rear drivers side as high as ur biggest axle stand will go (or a few old wheels) to suppost in and then get under the drive shaft and do it through there? Just a thought as if you don't have those random sheets of steel in the way you can get to it like that quite nicely.

Good luck with it! As for the thermostat housing - be VERY VERY VERY VERY careful when removing those two 1/2in nuts. If they feel like they may shear - they will. TRUST ME. In that case, smear the join with instant gasket (on the outside) bang the engine back in and hope for the best - its too close to D-day to break the studs.... Instant gasket IS an acceptable repair on the thermostat gasket - and in fact I'd recommend a small smear even if you have a new gasket to go in there. Use Coppaslip (or that supa-dup stuff from Ian Toon) on the studs before you fit the thermostat cover. As I say, mate, best of luck and see you there.

yep, they broke ;D Not to worry, a drill and a couple of m6 nut and bolts, new gasket and plenty of sealant was used... The rad is in, the car was at the show and it all worked fine, well the cooling did anyway... I'm glad i got the car there, even if i havent slept since 9am yesterday and worked through the night on it... pics soon or when I'm not feeling so hot and sweaty (time for a niiiiiice cold shower ) Pat, i changed the clutch as well at the same time, thought i might as well.
