Amazing! I'm really impressed you decided to save this old beast Look at mk3 cavalier calipers, I believe they fit, and also Astra GTE like you say. Good luck with the re-test! keep us posted

Cheers. It has cost more and been more effort than it was worth probably, but I couldn't help think it would be a shame to bin it just for the sake of nicking some parts off it. I think I'll try and blag a lift to the scrappy from someone, I guess I could take one of my Manta calipers with me and see what it'll fit on and presuambly I could swap the calipers the other way too.

Sliding calipers off the 90s vauxhalls fit on but the discs do not. The discs need to be machined to the correct centre bore and PCD and they also need a spacer to line up with the caliper. The 4 pots off a volvo 240 fit too but i think the pedal travel is a little long if you use them with the standard master cylinder.
If you can get a set of 78-86 carlton 2.2 vented discs they bolt up as the origonals and you can use these with the 2.0 16v calipers. I'm pretty sure the volvo 4 pots work with these discs too but i would have to double check.

I'm probably going get some carlton disks tomorrow. It sounds like the 16v calipers pretty much fit them, but with a slight lip of the pad which won't contact the disk. People have run them like this with no problems though. The volvo ones are the same apparently, but with a bigger lip. They also need 15s in order to fit. I've only got the standard 13s.

I knew someone who did a Manta just like this entirely in Red Oxide primer, and it looked really good.

Just be aware that once the pads get worn there will be an overhang of the pads past the edge of the disc which will, if left to the end of the pad will meet. Just found this thread and chuffed to bits that you've decided to save it. My first Manta was a white 1.8 hatch which died a death many moons ago. It'll reward you with an enjoyable ride and loads of fun if you look after it.

It's so nearly ready for the MOT now, but the tank is getting patched up again at the moment. It seems to be made from tissue paper as a lump of rust punched a hole through the tank as I tightened the strap on the tank up. I went with the carlton disks and some calipers from a calibra in the end, came to about £50 for new disks and pads and calipers from a scrappy in the end, not bad. Once the tank is back from being fixed (Monday) it should be ready for another stab at the MOT:).

Great news. Before you put the tank on make sure you underseal it well. And put some rubber strips inside the metal straps. They're what cause most of the corrosion in the tank with vibrations. (And not good ones). It'll prolong the life quite a lot.

I was going to just go over the straps with a wire brush today then repaint them to try and stop as much water getting trapped as possible. Not really sure where I could get some rubber strips that kind of size, any ideas?
/Edit just got some damp course form B&Q, we'll see how that does.

Don't think you can replace the metal straps, but if you cut up a rubber mat or an inner tube or something then put them inside the straps it'll deaden the vibration between the tank and the metal straps.

Passed the MOT today . Advisories on condensation in the head lamps and worn ARB bushes and a rusty rear arch. It's made me a very happy bunny. Now all I need to do is get some paint on it so it has a chance of passing next year. I seem to be having auto-choke problems too, on the way home it would start idling at 2000rpm for no apparent reason, not sure what that's about. I'll try and get a weber on there ASAP. I need to get a gearlever gaitor before I die of CO poisoning too:D.

I'll keep an eye out for the weber conversions kits. I get the impression you need the kit really, not just any old dgv.

Give it a good clean and get it resprayed in commercial white. Spray shops normally have some kicking around as its what vans get sprayed and we all know how bashed they get. So its generally quite cheap to get it shot over in that. Then a Satin black bonnet, roof and tailgate.
