had a productive couple of hours in the garage this afternoon. i finished school forever and EVER today - wahoooooo00o!so, after my exam this morning i rode to the local key cutters because the key in the simson had seriously started flexing when i was trying to turn it. the key isnt like a conventional key, its just a L shape, with a plastic handle and no grooves. the key cutter couldnt help though. went back to the bike and the key was flexing badly again, so i tried to start it without turning the key and it did so i just rode home. got fairly close to home and it starting to stutter, but i was just passing my friend in his garden so i could stop...the stutter continued, and then it stopped working. this could either be because of no petrol or a bad connection, but i couldnt get it started again becuase the key was just flexing so i had to push it home my dad's just gone away this morning too, so it was all down to me to get the bike fixed and i need it for work tonight. so, first thing, get the seat and tank off so i can see the coil, switch and battery faily well. So, what've i've done is by-pass the need for a switch by connecting the wire from the coil and the one that goes to the magneto together. this would be ok except the battery would drain if i left it so i now have to disconnect the battery all the time. i did however, manage to get the key to turn to the point of having the lights on (good considering i don't finish work till 11), but with the key in i cant get the battery cover back on. the only thing that could fall out is the battery, but that is held in place with a tight rubber strap normally anyway. however, i put some duct tape over it anyway...it looks very traveller, but d'you think it is going to be ok considering i'm riding 60 miles to a Skoda meet on Sunday? Now this is the connection of the wires i've made...d'you think its going to hold? I know its a bit of a bodge, but it'll do for now, i've message this guy to see if he has a switch and key. otherwise, its £24 plus hefty postage from germany for a one... i also cut, drilled and fitted a new L plate for the back after sucessfully breaking me old one...

that worked well less than a mile on my way to work and it cut out just the same, so while the switch is still a problem with the bending key, its not the source. i left it at my sister's house and got a lift to work. finished work at 10 and went round to my sisters, where, once the battery had been re-connected and reserve fuel put on it started fine. so it definately needs petrol, but i've ran out of petrol before and this is something different. so i was riding it home trying to keep the engine revs high, and as i slowed down to come into my street as did the revs and low and behold the engine stuttered twice and then cut out. great stuff. so just talking to my mechanic mate dave..and tomorrow i'm gonna put some fuel in and check the gap of the points and see if it is any better then. apart from that, i'm really quite unsure what to do so any advice would be more than welcomed. the spark and lights run mainly off the flywheel magneto which is why i think this is the area causing the problem. we had the same sort of thing happen a few weeks ago but this was solved with a new condensor.

?? you call that a bodge? when someting breaks on my daily ride (pics later) i just trow it away! some curse word tired to steal it by breaking the steering lock? who needs an ignition anyway! gaffa tape is expensive use electrical tape! carry so many tools in your pocket that when you fall off you break your collar bone on em! lights don't work? don't drive late at night! striped your kickstart? push starting makes you look cool..
but seriously excellent to hear you are working away on your bike and doing a great job, sick to death of seeing my mechanical 'inept' friends blameing there bikes for there unreliablity. i mean 'inept' is the worse possible way.

gaffa tape + mr T = some serious kick ass curse word! also i was thinking, check your plug gap, and try running it with the fuel tap only half way if you think it could be flooding...
ooh, are you running it on unleaded? you may need to add some lead addative, the cutting out could be caused by overheating (piston sticking) if you are using unleaded as I'm sure you know it burns hotter than 4 star/ lrp

There are an amazing number of MZs still around. After all they still make 'em in Turkey and AFAIK you can still buy 'em new here. There's a thriving race scene, for a start. You'll find a few MZ owners on www.ixion.org.uk(edit - no, it turns out they've stopped making them now. Oh well.)

decided to re-paint the exhaust heat shield. as it started: i then rubbed it down with rough sand paper, followed by fine sand paper. then did the same but using brake cleaner too (only coz i found it on a shelf and decided to give it ago) anyway, then it looked like this: 2 coats of primer later and it looks like this: i'm leaving the primer to dry now. it says it needs 24hrs...bit of an , coz i need to use the bike...ohh well. might get it done on wed eve- we'll see.

Ooooh, retro!
Love it.
I have an MZ ETZ300 in the garage, but it needs a new engine after I welded the conrod to the piston.......
For now I have to make do with a VFR800FI and my recently bought Hongdou GY200 trail bike.

Top play with the Gaffer tape (Is there nothing this wonderful stuff will not do?) I got done the other day on the Husky. Waiting at the traffic lights, the bike started to creep, then stalled. upshot-The clutch cable had come from its clip, lent against the down pipe and melted through. Thank God for Dyas and Gaffer tape for the temp fix ;D

why yes - tis time for a crappy little update the heat shield as it is now after 3 coats of paint - still needs laquering. its a nissan red colour and i've put it next to the bike and i reckon its gonna look the nuts. now, the other night after work the kick start kept getting caught on the rear brake mechanism as i was trying to start it - which it has never done before. So I had a look to see what was wrong, and there was a big crack running all the way through the kick start! The top 'slit' is supposed to be there - the bottom not. see, it runs all the way through... Thankfully when we bought the bike it came with a box of spares and in there was a spare kick start which was fitted in 15 minutes - that what i love about this bike! I also fitted a new rear L plate after the other one broke when i dropped the bike... the new one rocks -look!! hehe ! Thats about it for now, next pic should hopefully have the heat shield mounted ;D

well i've finished painting it now and fitted it. Before: After: What do you think? I really really like it. It looks so much better than the silver! it goes really well with the black. I also cleaned my engine today... And I want to repaint the side panels (in black) but I don't want to loose the IFA sticker, so I'm currently trying to design it on the computer, then make a template/stencil... my effort: Also, been thinking, see the black far in the 'before' pic that runs between the handle bars? Was thinking about doing that red. And the luggage rack on the end - paint that red or silver? Comments welcomed.

add a carbon fibre effect tax disc holder; i did on my aprilia rs50 and it meant it then had 900bhp and was overtaking ferrari enzos! and that was with the choke on!
