Not been on for a while and had a change of name. I am now MrT (the retro rider previously known as T5) Still got the 1303, Doblo and Vespa but sold the Datsun. Thought I'd start a new thread as I've finally got around to doing something. These are photos from when I got the 1303. Since then its lost its bumpers and undergone some welding. So far I'v done a bit under the front wing (drivers side) for last years MOT. Last week I was rebuilding the back end of the drivers side heater channel and rear wheel arch until I ran out of welding wire! Still, I made a good start and just need to complete a few patches. This is what it looked like until i started stripping the paint away: Once I'd got through the first patch it looked like this Inside were even more patches upon patches Heres a couple of shots of the heater channel after I had rebuilt it. I had a panel to fit over here (including the side of the heater channel) but I decided to rebuild the channel and then cut up the new panel and weld it on like the original wing to give more strength rather than just covering up. I also strengthened up around the seatbelt mounting. I just managed to tack on the panel before I ran out of wire. I had to cut it up to get it to match the bodywork and ended up chucking a lot of it. I'll post some more when I get some more gas and wire. This installment was kindly brought to you by a SIP welder and Black Sabbath!

I've got quite a lot done since I last posted. I've finished off welding the rear wheel arch on the driverside it needed a repair panel as there was quite a large hole when I removed all the rust! I've done the passenger side wheel arch as well although it wasn't as bad. The end of the heater channel had rusted away though. I rebuilt this like I did the driver side then fitted a repair panel to the lower edge of the rear quarter Under the rear arch just needed a few small patches but I did need to remove the bracket that fastens to the chassis to get at some of the rust. I may end up taking it off again as my welding looks a bit like I have sneezed and then painted over it. It is strong enough just messy! Inside was the same story as the driverside with more patches than a pirates convention. I cut them all out and welded in a double skinned repair panel from VW heritage. This panel was about £25 but is really well made and fitted perfectly. It must have saved me hours of hammering as I could never have made one to fit. I had to make a few small patches to fill around it and also strengthen around the seatbelt mounting. I've also done some work on the front wheel arch and started a small fire when I filled in the trim holes, it's amazing how well waxoil burns. I'll put some pics up of the front arch soon (hopefully it will be days not months this time!)

Arrrgh I hate rust, satisfying to chop it out though. Even more satisfying if you can weld it back together. Looks like the makings of a very nice bug.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I've never been sure of 1303's. I'm starting to warm to them a little bit but i always think the nose is a bit bulbous.

Thanks for the comments, some more pictures...... The front of the heater channel on the passenger side also needed some work. I had to cut out a section of the wheel arch before I could fix up the channel. I also found out why the passenger side of the windscreen never cleared properly, the heater pipe didn't actually connect up to the vent. I fixed it up with a bit of aluminium pipe (the flexible stuff). Hopefully I won't have to risk life and limb trying to stretch my arms to wipe the windscreen anymore (well maybe not as much). One more small patch and the heater channel was finished. I've since put a patch in the wing over the heater channel. If anyone needs to invest some money then I would get shares in welding wire, CO2, Grinding wheels and weld-through primer because I seem to be getting through more than my fair share. I was going to try to match the paint but it's showing its age so I may have a change. Hmmmmmm, that means it'll end up matt or satin black like my scooters! If only somebody would invent a darker colour than black.

nice 03, good luck with the repairs This is our 1303, luckily we haven't had to do any of the welding as it was pretty straight to begin with

very nice looking bug, 1303s seem to suit bright colours. I've had the welder out again today, didn't manage much as I ran out of gas again. I've been working on the passenger side jacking point. I hate welding underneath especially as its getting cold and damp in the garage. I'll have to dig out my heater tomorrow but that means rolling the beetle out of the way, who knows what I'll find lurking around. This is what I found inside the bug today: You can't leave the garage for more than a minute without bloody monsters taking up residence! Here's some pics of my welding from today: View from underneath before & after: Top of hole before and after: I have to say it's some of the worst welding I've done. Blew a few holes and a bit Mr Blobby.Once I've finished the patch 'll actaully get to put the jacking point back on. Since work stopped I've been thinking about colour schemes and been playing on bug selecta. Currrently thinking matt/satin black with brown primer sides. Nothing too fancy.

Hmm, wood panels you say? How hard is fablon to apply? Not sure yet but may be the way to go. I'm suffering from a severe lack of motivation at the moment, maybe planning the paint will spur me into action! I used to have a T5 in the late eighties/early nineties. Started off in its original graphite grey then ended up going through all the colours available in aerosol (at the same time usually). Finished it off in smoothrite green/white then it got stolen/recovered. It was never the same so got cut-down and sold. I've regretted it ever since. Here's an early pic before the paint got out of control: I've got a cut down Cosa at the moment but it's off the road with leaky brake cylinders. (£60 for a master cylinder is the main problem!) Hope you enjoyed Brid, I've not been very active on the rallies lately.

definalty had that 80's theme going on with the colours then haha, looked a nice bike too. bloody fast those t5s, thats what I'm after when I get some funds together
brid was bloody brilliant, I never made it to the custom show, spent all day in the pub. definalty going to the next one
wood panels look great, i was asking jettadelux about applying fablon a while ago, sounds like its a case of patience and not rushing things to get a good result. definatly worth a try IMO
