Hi there.. been about for a while but have yet to post anything in the readers ride section! About 8 years ago both of my parents ran near identical (apart from colour) 1982 Volvo 345GL's and back then I thought they were excellent cars - so I'd aimed to get one as a first car. After being given a couple of cars (Austin Metro then a Skoda Favorit) this didn't happen. I also turned into a bit of a Skoda geek - still love 'em too! Last year I bought a 1988 360GLT and had it for a year - til I blew the diff when it ran out of oil - not fun at 60mph on the M1 Needing a car quickly - another 360GLT (this time a saloon) came up on ebay - so I got it! Especially as it had the extremely rare factory bodykit. The evening I got it after driving it back: After an appointment with a hot air gun: Destriped (well, I've done one side! ;D)with a mate's 360. Bought leather interior from a scrapped 340: The current modifications are pretty pathetic (winter doesnt help!) - clear front indicator lenses and Spax adjustables all round are on the list after some 15" Volvo 400 series alloys of some sort. Perhaps something like this lookswise: I've fitted 13cm Infinity Kappa 5.1 components in the front amped at 50w and a 12" Kenwood subwoofer bridged at 150w - which sounds pretty sweet. Future plans - who knows, bodywork is being done at the moment - new sill and rear arch today. Hopefully going to go for the +Turbo route using fuel injection system and turbo from a 940 2.0. ;D Should be around 165-170bhp, and silly torque available from 2k RPM Sorry for the essay...

Cheers guys! Rubber strips are staying - especially as it'll probably end up getting a respray eventually, not getting my paint damaged! Just got back in from my welders garage - new sill and arch are in place, looking tasty. Should have it back tomorrow. Sorry no pics

Well done for thinking outside of the box - your GLT looks really very smart, I think the saloon shape works a bit better than the normal hatch back. Your plans for it sound spot-on & it would be great if you could find a set of those wheels they work really well on the car - especially painted grey like in your P.S picture Oh & welcome by the way - looks like you'll be continuing Retro-Ride's tradition of diversity

I like that too; they are so rubbish i would love to own one.... with t5 wheels on it? Dunno whether that's a compliment - but nevermind and I'd argue the point that they're 'rubbish' Unfortunately T5 wheels don't fit (5 Stud) but the wheels in my PS image are from a Volvo 480 - relatively easy to find, but I'm using the good tyres up yet on my existing wheels before I get hold of a set. Saw my welder yesterday and he's done an awesome job of the new sill and arch. MOT and bodyshop next! Cheers for the feedback!

No its 100% a compliment!
When I was young i thought they were shocking; I'm still reliving the nightmare of being picked up from school in my friends mums (she was a biatch which has something to do with it)
Now they are different, fun, retro (in the same way as my skodas) and I would like to own one
Plz don't take offence I really like it

Well I knew my sills were pretty rusty - so with its MOT pending I thought I better get it sorted! This was last week... First of all I had a right game getting the sideskirt off the car because someone in the past (not original) had bonded it on as well as the original fixings. But in my opinion the bodykit itself is the actual reason for this rust to be so significant - they don't get this bad usually! So, It's been at the welders and I've got it back today looking much smoother. It's now ready for it's MOT then I'll get it sprayed up at a local bodyshop. Pics of the new panels just with welds ground down and primed. Hope you people enjoy pics! ;D

The blissful sight of a new sill. Lovely car, Volvos make the cushiest street sleepers. Boxy but good.

There's a super clean but very base-spec turquoise/blue 3dr F-plate 340 of some sort I see regularly. Having spent time here and read threads like this now makes me look at in a different light. There was an E-plate GLT with early style alloys for sale recently round here at £250, looked OK.
That's some impressive rot. As it can't have got that bad in one year, presumably it was there at the last MoT?!

The early style alloys are damn nice - far better than the later GLT wheels.
It must've been there at the last MOT - but the bodykit covers the top of the sill so alot of it isn't visible. Pics were with the skirt removed. I've only had the car since October, it had enough work done at the last MOT too judging by the receipts I have! Perhaps the garage thought they'd already screwed enough out of the previous owner (stupidly expensive shock absorber replacements) and called it a day.

There is a bloke who works at Power Engineering in Uxbridge who has a turbocharged volvo 340. Might be worth looking at his car / speaking to him about the conversion. He's been running it for at least a year with various different setups and as much access to a rolling road that he requires to get the thing running well.
