Cool - my dad used to have one of these in the late 70s, early 80s. Eventually fell to bits when the rear door fell off... He said it was the quickest thing he'd ever driven 0-30, after that.... I'd try to smooth out the sides, lose the stripes, perhaps some round lights or spot lights in the front (didn't the early ones have round lights anyway?, or am I thinking of Robins?) To me, the wheels just don't work though I'm afraid. Not certain when sort you need, maybe some mini-mags? As I seem to remember there is quite a bit of spare room in the engine bay, so perhaps a 1300 G40 engine from a Polo? Or considering the weight of the thing, a bike engine is a good alternative

Dude, that is one wicked ride mate, really really nice.
Bike engine is well a must.
Styling..
What about lotus white, with a set of 13 inch minilites and defo needing round headlights (what about the crystal one's that are on golfs)
Stripped out interior and a set of black buckets n a cage, it will look hard as nails..

What a great car...let's hope you can get it that low as it looks so cool! I love the whole concept, especially with the tuned original motor. Everyone should have one as their first car!

hi all, wasnt expecting this many replies! I'm glad people seem to like it - i was trying to keep as much of it using period 70's parts where it matters. i don't know what it goes like yet as the engine is on the bench!! but standard it as sum1 said it is pretty quick to 30mph due to only weighing 500Kg. as for susspension i intend on building and fitting trailing arm rear susspension with coil overs to replace the leaf springs and going back to a set of 10" steel wheels painted black with little alloy hubcaps in the middles (same as minis) as these clear the inside of the archs and look the mutts nuts (i have a pic sumwhere - will post when i find it. i am planning on using a bedford rascal axel - and fabricating the rest - anyone know about building susspension here...? i am pretty much copying the setup on the bond bug as its very simular - but pointer are much apreciated. thanks again nick

I'm assuming you already know about the Liege kit? They use Rascal axles and Reliant engines & 'boxes...I'm guessing that'd be a good source of info? groups.msn.com/Liegecars

What a cool car! I've always loved those things - and RWD to boot! I have the idea of putting in a Japanese Kei-class (sp?) engine or something - one of those 600cc screamers! Very cool ride mate!

Spoke to Andy Suanders (God) at VW Action last year when he was there visiting his Sister, he was in the Bentally Insane andysaunderskustoms.freeservers.com/car%20-%20mentley.htmHe said that the Reliant they built on Panic Mechanics was one of the best/fastest cars he ever built, and the man hours and work that went into stretching the body was amazing. It's the original reliant engine, but it was Turbo'ed, INtercooled and was running reletivley low boost (to save the little reliant engine) Andy said that whilst he did not see eye to eye with the contestant on the programme (the driver guy) he was one helluva driver, and a complete maniac, well you would have to be to drive the Saline Warrior.... This is the only car that Andy still has from the programme..... andysaunderskustoms.freeservers.com/tv%20-%20saline.htmHe was a really nice bloke, and a certified genius... ;D

hi, yea i had heard of lieges - got alot of tips from a man with a liege on building my engine. thanks for pointing out the website as it has highlighted that a ratio of 5.1:1 will make my car to 57mph @ 5000rpm on the 10s... not what i want - although would get there quickly. i will get a pic of the new rims i plan to use later. am just putting the finishing touches to the new engine in the garage today so should be in soon. thanks for the links dubbedup, i think i saw the program, a turbo would be nice but alot of work making / modifying manifolds but is still definatly a possibility for someitme. - i also realy like your beetle on your thread - great car and mk1 golfs are damn cool. my mate had a formula vee ( you might of seen us at the jam last year, an orage vee - it won best race car in the show n shine. ill keep you updated on the engine... cheers nick

I'm in hampshire, about 25 miles north of portsmouth. unfortunatly no pics but its a complete shell and chassis and is very solid, some of the things wich didnt receive good rust protection such as the rear axel are abit rusty but would clean up fine. there is no engine n box but i do have them. where abouts are you? i can sort pics - the body looks alot worse than it is coz the paint is all peeling but underneath its very good.
