Will a Rialto handbrake cable not fit? Have quite a few if you want one! Thats a lovely axle and anti-roll bar wonder where you got those from ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) It's coming along, soon as it's mot'd you gotta come up for a visit! (And another Rialto axle - welded this time!)

nope - i don't think a rialto one will do; i got sparesman to measure one for me and he said they where the same side outer as a kitten - when it arrived it was clear to see it was not.
however, can you measure the inner and outer of a robin and a rialto hand brake cable for me (infact anything that uses that axle and lever).
i have what i thought was two spare kitten cables; turns out they must be robin or somthing as they are tiny.
as soon as I'm done i NEED to try a welded diff! meant to be a new copper fuel line tonight but cant find the P clips to hold it.... doh.

long time no update.... before i went on holiday i got it to this stage: ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF1471.jpg) ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF1475.jpg) thats anti roll bar mounted and all the suspension sorted. since then i have also run most of the fuel lines at the rear and fitted the fuel tank; finished building the engine as far as i can on the stand. (no need for a pic; it looks the same as the pic of it 'mocked up' but with bolts in the holes) the exhaust has arrived: ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF1507.jpg) ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/newexhaust.jpg) ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/newexhaust2.jpg) many thanks to fin at dynoflow (www.dynoflow.co.uk), its a mighty find bit of kit, its up to me to mount it and connect it to my manifold. also hopefully managed to bag some extremely rare parts: ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSC01396.jpg) never seen any manifolds for a reliant engine like that; the 750motor club were restricted to only one choke of carburation so ran half a DCOE most of the time; and the small market meant it is was very rare for htings to be manufactured outside of the 750motor club specs. these babies are are twin solexs; not sure what size they are, but they will be 27s or 32s i would imagine. they also come with a full aparently complete lucas mechanical fuel injection system to suit a reliant engine! however this might be even more of a head ache than trying to sort out and obtain parts / jets for the solex's. next jobs are to bolt the propshaft up, put oil in the diff, bleed the rear brakes, make the gadget to shorten the hand brake cable, and jack the front end up so i can start to hang the exhaust and finish the fuel line, then its onto the front suspesnion which is receiveing a somwhat less thorough rebuild. the plans have changed slightly due to missing the retro cars show dead line, and being in spain for retro rides show, once the front suspension is done and its back on its wheels i will be MOTing it and then removing the engine and painting the engine bay and fitting the engine bay; this will mean i am guarenteed a MOT for next years show season.... in theory.

they are here! ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/1.jpg) half cleaned: ![](http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/?action=view¤t=2.jpg) mocked up: ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/3.jpg) ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/4.jpg) still need to clean them more; they are actually in great nick; the filters are spotless and its gleaming inside; hardly used I would say. lots of dust and dirt on the top of them; turn them over and they were really clean! slight change of plans from above; I'm gonna get the engine in and get it all finished before going for the MOT. the front is now up in the air and the fuel line is run is as far as I can go with the engine in and without getting in the way of painting the bay.

Just a thought here, if the Rialto style axle was fitted to make future swaps easier to source further axles for, then why not use the kitten/mini backplates and twin-piston cylinders on the Rialto axle? This way, you'd be able to run a stock cable for the handbrake.
I've probably missed the point, but the mini rear cylinders that kittens use are surely going to remain available for longer than the sliding ones fitted to tricycles, Rebels and your kitten?
Nice job though, it should sound quite sweet with that lovely exhaust system, a shame the rest of the World will need to get underneath to see that craftsmanship!

cheers for the kind words; havent done much more; everything went wrong yesterday;
went to replace the hand brake pulley so i could bolt the prop up; but i couldnt find the new pulley; it wasnt in the box of new parts so god only knows where it is now!
next i tried to work out how much i need to shorten my hand brake cable by; 7", damn, thats more than i expected. i had originally intended on making a pair of plates with 3 or 4 holes in with bolts passing through; and the cable wrapped / routed through it around the bolts which would then be tightened sandwhiching the cable between the two plates. OK if you need to loose a inch or two; bearing in mind you can have one on each side, but for 7" its asking a bit much; doesnt really like being bend much either.
so onto plan B; which i will explain at the time.
next i took the carbs off the manifolds which gave me a chance to measre them; they are 35s; damn. they might be too big. when i get in tonight i will hopefully work out what size chokes are in them and if they are fixed choke or if they can be changed.
ho hum. i will get there eventually.
GJR11L; the main reason for doing this was because kitten axles are hard to source compared to rialto ones; and with the increased power i don't know how long they will last; the only real difference between a kitten and a rialto axle is the brakes and the damper mounts (the damper mounts actually help; as when lowerd you need to drop the bottom damper mounts a few inchs to stop them bottoming out, this is already done for you on a rialto axle!)
changeing the brake backplate is easy if you can get the hubs off; but thats easier said than done; and then you would have to cut the cable guides from a kitten axle to be welded on to the new one; the heat from this would probably damage the oil seals too so they would need doing as well.
a lot of work; i did consider it but chickened out! shortening the hand brake cable is comparativly quick and easy!!

You need those carbs on there purely for looks ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) can you not put some restrictors on the inlets and put some smaller jets in?

carbs turn out to have 28mm chokes; so they should be OK! yay! less can be said for the passenger footwell; which will end up 99% removed! eek! still not sure about the battery; would like to keep it up front but that might need to go to the boot to make way for them too.
got the hand brake cable a bit closer to completeion last night; just need some suitable cable clamps and then thats the hard bit done at the back.
back on its wheels on saturday / sunday and strart ripping out the engine bay? maybe.....

went to B&Q and got a hand brake shortening kit off the shelf! (actually a kit for doing one end of a emergency cable on a trailer). it was meant for a slightly bigger cable (3mm) but my hand brake is about 2mm and the clamps shrunk down to about 1.5, so it works and clamps up tight. ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/13092007075.jpg) excuse the pic; phone carmera decided to focus on everything but the subject! it looks better than that in real life, and if you knew how stiff the cable was you would apreciate just how tight that is! cable shortened and when you pull the lever inside it locks up the rear wheels nicely. result. i used the old clevis pin attatchment that i had cut off as this means its easily removed in the future. i love it when a plan comes together. also changed the pulley in the mechanism up in the tunnel too, the old one was so caked in grease that I'm still digging it out from under my nails 12 hours later! just need to fit the wheels, adjust the rear brakes, then re adjust the hand brake (its a nightmare to adjust with the propshaft in place! do as much as you can when its in bits. hopefully another update on saturday! its on target so far....

getting these; popped the wheels on and drop it down to the ground last weekend having nearly finished underneath at the rear for now, and bolted the prop back on. ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF1531.jpg) needs lowering...... etc etc. next i started stripping the engine bay... it strted looking like this: (annoyingly the camera didnt fair too well leaving me with terrible 'before' pictures) ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF1537.jpg) ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF1541.jpg) i painted the bay satin black when i first got the car and i was about 14. since then lots of the beige i painted over has fallen off leaving the pink gel coat showing through. its annoying seeing how much stuff has gone rusty having sat in a damp garage. anyway, having removed this lot: ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF7708.jpg) i was left with: ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF7704.jpg) ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF7701.jpg) i removed a few more pipes and stuff after that, only took about an hour to get that far, so am well on target to have the engine out and the bay stripped clean of all brackets by the weekend, leaving just the wiring to work around.

Good news is it now looks like: ![](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/nickkeyser/DSCF7726.jpg) not bad going to rip out and engine in about 2 hours, didnt jack the car up at all, and didnt use a hoist, just two people! bad news is the front seal on the gearbox is leaking, so thats got to come out too, have that fixed. i was going to leave it in and just bosh new mounts on it; but while its out i might as well mod the stick so its a bit more user friendly and has a shorter throw, and replace the propshaft bolts. more tonight i expect...
