As some of you may know, I've never been interested in Beetles/busses etc. But after using this site you lot have almost got me into them. I've just checked out the hoodride site, being inspired by the rat look post! Has a street racer bus ever been done? Sparco Rev seats, harnesses, porky engine... ;D Ultimate Valet van, if it was had a minty paint job... This does not do anything for me! It's doggers! Amazing...

In defence of VW's Some are slow, don't handle or stop but then again that can be said about many of the other cars makes and models on here. It's down to the individual who purchases that vehicle to do what they wish with it. There are many old VW's that can handle very well, reach speeds that many people would only dream of and that can also stop. Agreed it doesn't come without some work, but then again don't the majority of people on here change their vehicles to achieve what they want. Sorry if I sound a bit tetchy but I just think that pigeon-holing a make like that is a bit out of place in this kind of forum. TaitRacing Heres a fast crewcab that was for sale, now sold, but it might give you an idea of a price for one with a porky engine, I think its along the lines of what you was thinking of www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=147128&page=1&pp=10&highlight=single

hold on a second.... my 1303S Beetle handled better than my missus's modern Mondeo! I think you must have been in some pretty suspect dubs... the fastback i currently call my own is pretty rapid, even by today's standards but certainly for 1972. The 1303 i refer to was one of the first mainstream cars to feature mcphearson (sp?) struts at the front and as a result handles really well - certainly better than many other early 1970's cars. You have to remember when talking about the commercial vehicles - pickups, panel vans and thus campers - that they were built to work so they're not going to be all about keeping speed through corners and outbraking a Porsche. The fact that many of them now do so is a tribute to their owners, and i'm sure once you see a road legal split screen panel van driven to santa pod, then run a 14 second 1/4mile, then driven home, you'd alter your view. as for "nazi wagons"... you do know the british army rebuilt the factory after the war and started production of the beetle as you know it, don't you? it was thought up by a nazi but the finance was through the german people who entered into a savings scheme for a car. Oh and taitRacing... you wanna be putting aside at least 5-6k for a solid pickup with a 'good' engine (probably fairly standard). if you want all the shiny bits, decent paint and a nice beefy motor, make it 3-4k more. either that or you could forget the 'current' trend, buy a wedge for next to nothing, make it "right smart" for a few k and wait a couple of years for the rest of the scene to catch up

This 1303 in particular is quite a machine.... try telling the guy that built it that it's slow and doesn't handle... 5 minutes inside it would change your mind..... And you don't need a porsche motor in a van to make it quick... just ask Dan Buzzo of Akciddento.com Sadly now not quite as well 'endowed' but it did have a 2332cc Type1 (beetle) engine running EFI and kicking out around 200bhp... good for 120+ and 15sec 1/4 mile passes.

Thanks everyone. Good info. Hyest, that crewcab is the business, I thought it would fetch more than that even though its a cack hander! It was only a dream spec, when I said about the Porsche lump, anything other engine that was still quick (for a van) would suit me. Woud a panel van or single cab be cheaper?? Pillock, A 'wedge' is this the next generation shape?? Like this one....

I was offered a type25 single cab before I bought my van, at the time i wanted a splitty van and nothing else... i now curse myself, the T25 was actually given away in the end, which makes want to kick myself very hard. /me note to self never turn down a gift horse
T25 prices are rising as they become the latest craze, get in quick

it comes down to two options... 1) the splitty. pay £6k for a solid one, and another £3k making it 'cool' - brm's, nice paint, slammed, half decent motor. then pay £1k per year to keep it going through the mot. then the bottom falls out of the market. sell for £6k. 2) the wedge. pay £50 for one. bung some porker cups on, get it on it's knees, euro it. even paint it if you want - german signwritten always looks good. then if funds allow later, lob a 1.8T in it and chip it to about 200bhp . finally sell it when everyone is begging for them for £10k

Any photo's/links? Can't say I've ever seen one done!
The splits just have so much character though, but it would be nice to see a sorted 'wedge' in a pic.

lmfao @ beetles being slow and not handling. Maybe you need to open your eyes and have a look around you a little more. If we're talking just modified VWs, then I'd agree with you. However, how would a standard Beetle compare to a Morris Minor of the same age, especially the steering & handling?

i've gotta say it's a valid question! can't think i've ever been in a 'standard' 60's bug (only standard bugs i've driven were 1303's, a whole different fish-containing water-heating device), and i've definately never driven a morris minor.
anyone give a fair and balanced opinion?

However, how would a standard Beetle compare to a Morris Minor of the same age, especially the steering & handling? when my bug was stock it was looked after and handled and stopped ok. Nothing exceptional, granted, but it was ok. I know NOTHING about morris minors so I'm not in a place to comment. but then again - since when has this place been about stock/standard cars? ;D
