Well I thought I'd give it a try on my little cinq (once i get it back from the garage) nothing to drastic just smoothing out the little grove on the front bumper. Shown in the picture below (not very well) My plan was to screw some self tappers into the gap then use fibreglass to fill the gap. Hopefully the self tappers will give the fibreglass to hold onto and then put a thin coat of wog over the top......Is this a good plan?? This is my first venture into this kindd of work so I'm completely clueless. Any help is most appreciated. This is the look i'm after. Subtle but effective:

bad plan! buy a cheapo soldering kit, and get a spare bumper or some suitable plastic, then plastic weld the gaps up. fibre glass will crack the 1st time you hit a pothole. you can also get plastic filler which works well

Told you I was clueless ;D
But how do I get it perfectly smooth? Could I buy some plastic welding rods and melt them into the gap? How do I prepare the surface? Do I need a little bit of plastic filler over the top?

I've had the swageline in the Audi front bumper removed by filling with plastic filler, no problems there...

OOOh any idea of a brand? Is it much like normal filler where I can sand it smooth and then use a filler primer?

Took a massive lump of fibreglass out & cost her over £300 to get me a new one made up

Are those banded golf steels on the red cinq? Absolutely Bloomin Gorgeous.
The totally smooth mk2 Big bumper i did a while back held up ok with lots of backed up fibreglas matt and didnt crack, and so have my wiper blanks etc. Just don't use p.38. Tis horrible stuff.

you need a gas soldering iron and plastic of the same sort the bumper is made out of so ideally, get a smashed up cinq bumper, cut a pice to fit the hole u want to fill then fill the gaps between with melted cinq bumper.
thats what i got told to do anyway and the bloke who told me used to do alot of plassy welding. u then fill over the weld with suitable filler.

I found a heat gun to be very effective, as above get an old bumper cut a strip roughly the right width heat up the original bumper till its sticky then start bending and heating the new strip till it sticks in the gap. Then heat over the the top of the filled gap and sort of 'spread' the filler piece out like this as you can see i havn't filled it yet and smoothed it but considering this took me 10 mins and is compleatly solid with only slight scuffs/marks in it its not a bad technique. *Disclaimer: Geordie1980 accepts no liabilty if you balls up your bumper using the aforementioned techniques.*

Oh and probably obvious but if you get a spare bumper to use in the mean time it makes life a hell of a lot easier ;D!!!

Try using some fine mesh in the gap you want to fill. Sand the area prior to filling to give it a key to adhere to. Don't put filler on a shiny surface cos it won't stay there long. So, rub it down, cut mesh to go in the swage line, rub down filler using a sanding block using finer paper towards the end then spray the filled area with primer 2 or 3 good coats and you'll find the filler will suck it up like a sponge. You can just spray it with paint but it will sink. Flat your primer with wet and dry sandpaper and water. Make sure it's completely dry before you paint or it will react. Keep posting pics so we can laugh I mean watch your progress.

Isopon does a flexible plastic filler for about £5-£6. I was gonna do this with my old micra and I had a plastic welder look at it but he couldn't get anything to take to it, he reckons that on some cars with bumpers that are unpainted as standard tend to use bastardised plastic which is a mix of allsorts so no good for welding.
