i pay my way on my mate's premises, well i've put the work in making the place usuable and help out where i can, and find him customers so its all good, and i've learned loads from him too. got 3 motors in there atm, 1 for sale, one for an engine swap then LPG conversion, a long term project i'm still shopping for and my caddy is parked outside waiting for a work slot too.
i have done engine swaps outside on the drive or street here though, only minis/bugs/T25s.

8-)This place is as cool as a freezer in the North Pole. it doesn't have any 4 post lifts or people paid to do the jobs you can't be bothered with though

The street was the place to be when I was younger because my Dad's garage was too small.
Now, my garage is full of a dismantled Mini so it's the driveway.

My work are heading down the "you can't work out of hours" route, or on other peoples cars etc So I've preempted this by renting half a barn. My bit is big enough for 10 cars or 11 when I get this wired in Huge thanks to B&D for hooking me up Also building a large metal workbench and getting my Huge compressor working as well, so I'll finally be able to do a few jobs I've promised

Down there, as the garage door is short by about 40mm I need to find someone who can raise the roof by 2 foot or 60cm plus, and then fit a taller roller door to the hole, may try get is a little wider, though not sure that will be possible. The cold and a knackered back from long term abuse does not make working on the concrete very nice in winter, sthough the season feels like it is turning now.

in a unit that I can barely afford to rent, that makes me skint each month, thats miles from my house, thats cold, that leaks etc etc... ..but thats being devoted to the cause I guess! ^^ The same place as Mike and Si... actually usually on the bit just in front of it, whilst trying to hide from the big dog that patrols the farm who has taken a disliking to me for some reason.

Garage and driveway for me, I'd love a double garage, but thankfully i've got a smallish car but its still a bit cramped. Also got a mate who has a choice of 2 and 4 poster ramps at his workplace if I need to.

Out in the gutter Oh, and the back garden is about to experience the rebuild of a spare front suspension crossmember. I'd really love a garage / workshop / big kid's toybox, but even level off-street parking would be nice!

Back in UK, I used to rent a lovely big barn with space for 4 cars, load of tool space etc. Here, I have access to another barn, but there isnt a lot of room due to it recently being filled with furniture, and I suspect the wooden floor is a bit weak. Currently project is in a "dutch barn" ie roof and no walls. I will see about clearing space in the main barn though and putting some re-inforcing in the cellar to fix the sagging floor. On the plus side, the wweather is better here, so being in the open isnt too much of a hardship.
Is there anything worse than working on gravel though? Trolley jack wheels just dig on, nasty sharpness when you are lying under a car, and dropping a nut from anything more than about 6 inches pretty much guarantees it to vanish only to be fond 6 months later.

Reading all of this makes me wonder why retro riders in need of work space don't pool together in their local area - thats what a lot of us banger boys do & it makes it much more affordable. 3 of us race off a patch of land that costs about £1000 a year to rent - but split 3 ways that isn't too bad at all. I've got a caravan full of tools & kit, piles of spares including several engines sheeted up, an engine crane & about 8 cars parked up there and the other blokes have recently got a second hand car hoist.
Some mates up the road have a workshop that is pretty basic but it has lights & power and you can work on 3-4 cars inside with room for more people to work outside & a bit of standing space for projects - that stands them about £200 a month I think, but again with a few people chipping in, it makes sense & is very affordable.

This is my shop, yes, it is "tha hood". Yes that is gravel. Ive rebuilt 2 engines on that gravel drive. Both work tops to this day. I do have use of a bay just outa sight in this pic, but I cant really leave any onging projects there since it belongs to a friend of mine (the guy I rent the shop from).

Hi, just joined the site, so hello..... ;D
am looking to do an engine conversion, have a W reg Toyota Celica, and a salvaged Celica which is a donor car for an engine conversion i am planning. problem is i live in central london, so have nowhere to actually do the work. i have an engine crane and all the tools i need, just not the space.
have been thinking of renting some space, a barn or something similar, but where do you start with that? have exhausted every search engine i can think of but nothing...only really need it for a week or 2, but might have to resort to a longer lease.
gonna get my brother who lives up in Gloucester to start scouring the farmland, but apart from that does anyone have any suggestions? cheers

Great idea Wilko! Any one on here from the Glasgow/Strathclyde/Lanarkshire area in a similar position to me want to club together to rent somewhere? Or anyone in that area with more space than they can use that could use a few more beer tokens?

24' x 27' garage with a driveway that holds 8 cars Makes it near impossible to afford big mods/projects...but it's all mine, which is probably better. That's what I keep telling myself anyway...
