Remember the movie Christine, where Arnie takes his car to Darnell's DIY garage which is situated on site with Darnell's Auto Wrecking? "A place where honest working stiffs can keep their car on the road so they can put bread on the table" How good an idea is that? I mean theres all these guys who don;t have a garage at home, lack the space or the neighbours just kick off if you try... a place where you could work on your car and just pay a small weekly bay rent and something for the light and power... use your own tools, bring your own parts, etc. even better if you can rummage through the junk out back Why don't we have places like that over here? There has to be a demand, right?

This is sorta the idea me and my dad had of buying an old mill building and renting it out as workshop space.

You know that would be a darn good idea, but I'm sure health and safety would put a stop to it.

I've thought about this at great length! I'd love to own a place like that. In fact, not so far away from me is an old abandonned hangar, (for want of a better word), right next door to the UK's biggest vehicle recycling company! It would be ideal! The case is frought with issues though, H&S being a prime concern. The possibilities are fairly endless though. When I was thinking about it, I was going to hire a friend of mine to manage it. I'd have him trained in mechanics and basic bodywork. There'd be tools for hire, four posters and a fully equipped spray booth. We'd haved special rates with all the local motor factors and have reference material for as many different types of vehicle we could get our paws on. Computers for internet access and diagnostics etc. And there's always the opportunity for doing complete resto's too. It's my eutopia!! Can't afford it now though!! I'm not so sure there's such a demand for it now though, as most people would rather not get their hands dirty these days. We are a select few!

I'm sure you could cover off the H&S and other liability issues with a suitable AUP or similar T&Cs.
I'd be more bothered about security and the place being full of chav tool theives.

There'd have to be a sliding scale of charges depending on how long the car's in the premises too and a method of booking tools in/out and it'd have to be open 24/7 to allow for all those 'five minute jobs' that take all weekend!!

There was (maybe still is, I dunno) a diy garage in Aberdeen. It was featured in PPC or practical classics or something a couple of years back. Its a big shed divided into working bays with a few 4-post and 2-post lifts, and quite a few "general bays" without a lift. There was also some covered spaces for people wanting to do valeting. You booked space by the hour, but iirc it was on a sliding scale and was reasonably cheap for longer rental tmes. You could get discount for frequent use etc. You supplied your own tools, although you could also hire some there. There was big stuff there for all to use....benches with vices, engine crane, hydraulic press etc. The guy that ran it was an ex mechanic himself and seemingly would often lend a hand or advice if needed.
Cracking idea imo. I hope its still on the go.
EDIT - a quick googling shows that itseems to have closed down a while back due to lack of custom. Shame.

As has been said - Health n Safety and Liability issues are the total blokker....... there are bays you can use in Dusseldorf - but the car cannot be left overnight ( insurance ) meaning you have to push the car in and out daily. I'd sort out a place and do this in a heartbeat for the old skool brigade, but I'd be closed down within the week Stupid that the paper pushers in their ivory towers can tell a group of like minded petrol-heads that they're being dangerous and should leave everything clean n tidy instead. - but let's not go there!

there was one near me for a time, closed down due to lack of interest and mounting insuarnce costs..
what we have to remember is that people who own older cars AND want to work on them AND don't have the facilies BUT have the disposable income to pay enough to keep a workshop open, (which is a very expensive undertaking if you have general public acess and untrained numptys cocking about ) are in a huge minority, most people who have the money to mess about with classic/performance cars have enough money to aquire themselves a house with a garage/driveway or pay someone to do it for them..

The Internet, like all tools, if used improperly, can make a complete bo**cks of even the simplest jobs...

come fix mine. I have the cars, the space, the tools but no time. Sadly, my current reason for retrolessness is time as well, I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old so finding time for them and all of the other million mundane things that have to be do (talk to missus etc) are just eating up time... Been promised that I can get a project for my birthday this year so that I can get it ready for my 30th next year (Should be RR09 for birthday celebrations!) Decisions on what to get... Ho hum.

Humm got a big plot of land, there is just no building on it LOL. A large 'shed' isn't counted as a 'building' though, is it not just a temporary structure? A bit like the Eiffel Tower being temporary?

Surely H&S and insurance would only be the same as a pull-it-yourself style scrapyard? And they're still going strong. There was a place like that near where I used to live in Portugal - big open bit of land with a barn and some pits (don't think there were any lifts or anything). People used to take their cars there and work on them. I think it's a great idea, but whether it would be commercially viable is another thing. I think a better idea would be to team up with other local enthusiasts and rent a barn or similar... I know a few people on here do that.

we rent a cowshed with our car club, but tbh it's just for storage really, as the roof leaks, it's surrounded by cow curse word and there's no leccy or lights! still enough to get 3 cars and all our wibblepoo in though - annoyingly, directly accross the yard at the arm is a brand new huge industrial unit, which the farmer rents to a builder for 25 quid a week - you'd get about 20 cars in it no probs!! grrrr! - kev
