In about 4 or 5 months i'll be looking to buy myself a new car.
I'm after something German and relatively quick (sporty looks etc)
Things I fancy are:
UR quattro non turbo Mk2 Golf GTi
what are you guys thought on which is best and also any other suggestions..
For owners of those cars, what are they like to live with?
Cheers
James

UR Quattro has the 5 cyl engine which makes it the winner! I'm currently running around in a MK1 Golf GTI Cabriolet which is quite good though, for my sins I've decided to keep it. Mk2 Golf is still OK but started to bloat! That said it has the digifant 1.8 which is a bit better than the K-jetronic I've got. Had a Passat GT with the Digifant engine and that was quick for a fairly big car.
PS. Have a1990 Quattro available if you're interested but it's not an UR, it's the more curvy one.

Sirroco? I know nothing about them, but they do look good, and I know they can be made quick.

I like my Roccos (see sig ) But I loved my 90 Quattro too (B3 unfortunately - keep looking at earlier 90's, more so than Coupes)

Since when has a Golf GTi looked sporty?! Get a V8 W126 or 6-pot W123 Benz - cheap and cheerful

Another vote for the Scirocco - cheap as anything (half the price of an equivalent condition Goof GTI) but same engine and handling..... Later Audi Quattros are also dirt cheap, a good UR is going to set you back but an early 90's example go for nothing, they're just too big these days to be in demand. My 90 Quattro 20v Sport set me back £275, had 176bhp and that gorgeous noise. Fully loaded too, first car with aircon and a trip computer. BMW E30? Can look as sporty as you want, ask pog about iS models. Also they'll feel sportier than the Golf thanks to the fact you can, if you want, swap ends on every roundabout

I'll be biased and say the Audi! If you need any info or help on running an early Audi then pop over to www.classic-audi.co.ukThere's more than a few over there!

I've had quite a few Golf GTI's, got two Mk2 16v's at the moment so would recommend those, never had an old Audi... yet, only a matter of time! I also have an E30 325i Sport which is a nice sporty older German car but compared to the Golf it does rather like a drink and doesn't feel any quicker to be honest. It does however make a much better noise and is RWD if that's your thing? Here's a few pics of my cars... Daily Mk2 (2 litre 16v, P&P'd head & manifold, VR6 brakes etc): Mk2 Track car in progress: E30, weekend car I like German cars then...

Thanks for the replies guys.
Stu, loving your daily, nice a stuble, Oak green?
As for the curvy quattro, it makes sense cos they are cheap, but doesnt do it for me over the UR ones.
When I meant looking sporty and the Gti I mean it has sporting pretnetions being a Gti an all.
The noise the quattro make is immense!!
Never really been a BMW guy but there is always a first time, how much more economical is a GTi over a 323i?
I would scarifice the economy to have the quattro. But I feel Ashes to Ashes may mean i'll be buying at the wrong time (after it has gone to air) B***er!

How much economy would you sacrifice? My 2.3 20v Quattro, when driven like it should be, returned 14mpg....

How much economy would you sacrifice? My 2.3 20v Quattro, when driven like it should be, returned 14mpg.... I managed to get 22mpg once out of my 90, and about the same out of the Coupe..... but it was the exception not the rule! on the whole I averaged around 16mpg... It's funny for a while... but the novelty soon wears off!

Does it HAVE to be quattro? Just sapping power and juice really (grip aside)... 2wd coupe would be high twenties early 30s MPG I think.....tis what my 1.9 coupe manages and that's running a weber! Can't beat the 5-pot warble......tis gorgeous

Yeah the non-quattro examples return much better figures - it's a clever system but saps a lot of power. However once you get used to wanging a big heavy car into corners at the same speed you would, say, a 205GTi - you start to like the 4wd! I only found this out when I accidentally took a corner much too fast, I thought I was on a different bit of the road. I think I even closed my eyes expecting to meet the hedge opposite but it just stuck to the road. Did have factory lowered suspension though which helps.
Rainking.... my upper figure was 25mpg, and that was on a nice slow cruise down the motorway following a bay camper, so 60-65mph. Day-to-day it gave me mid teens, and thrashing it was the same result. Lovely car though, used to really enjoy driving that!

A 90 quattro for a peformance bargain, a coupe/UR for performance £££'s and a GTi for . . . following the sheep

I know what you mean about following the sheep with the GTi
i know its stupid, but if i had an audi coupe i'd want a quattro, just because.
Seeing as they might be pricey and a bit uneconomical, the other options are
Scirocco & E30
What MPG are ppl getting from GTis and Scirrocos? similar i would have thought.

I am sure I was getting mid-20's mpg out of my 10-valve 90Q.
I put the correct 205/50 R15 Toyos on it, and with the way Dom had set it up, I was totally astounded with the handling and grip/traction (bearing in mind I have had a couple of well sorted Sciroccos, which are accepted as handling well)
Very versatile and reliable too - in 6 months mine did everything:
- Regularly towing my well-loaded car trailer (nearly 700 miles one particular weekend) - Mild off-road stuff down railway access tracks and the like (and never even needed the diff lock, even on mud) - Thrashed round Mallory (punched above it’s power/weight IMO, despite lardy ham-fisted driver) - Safe quick cross country travel in all weathers
Only once didn’t run 100%, and that was just a loose/wet king lead after several miles of driving FAR to fast down the equivalent of a uneven wet stony bridleway.
BTW with currently owning a FWD B4 16v, I would say the 4wd IS worth it.
Only sold it to fund my Rocco project, and now keep my eye on what others come up (would like a 20v next time). Plus one of those projects I would like to do, but know I will never get around to, is to create an example of the B3 90 shape ‘S4’ saloon that Audi didn’t make...

All Ur-Quattro are turbocharged, so if you fancy a Quattro shaped car then you're either looking at a Coupe with a bodykit or something that's had an engine swap. Other Audi went on to use the Quattro name for denoting 4WD being available and there have been Quattro variants of most of the Audi models since (80/90/100/200/V8/A4/A6/A8/TT/R8 etc). The Ur-Quattro is a beautiful car to look at and the driving is wonderful, they're not terribly home-mechanic friendly though with a combination of 80's electrics and an extremely tight engine bay (esp. the 20v version). Get a good one though and they are SO sexy! I think Gene Hunt has a Quattro in the coming Life On Mars follow up, Ashes to Ashes. Good luck, wish I was in the market for one
