Glad we cleared up the Ur thing ;D
A Scirocco is not much less practical than a 3dr Golf really, so it's down mostly to styling I guess. I would say though that the Golf is also built more robustly (Scirocco built by Karmann) and the plastics are on the whole somehow better inside it (prepares for backlash from Scirocco owners... I love them! I've had two and miss them terribly).
You've got a lot of choice in Golfs; 3dr or 5dr, Pre-86, 86-89*, 89-91, 8v or 16v, standard or campaign editions...
It's hard to go wrong really, especially if you get a low-mileage, low-owner, standard car... their depreciation seems behind them now and they're undoubtably classics already. That said, don't fear mileage... we used to love how GTI's came alive once they had 80,000 on the clock, they loosened up nicely and really went!
For personal preference a low-mileage 3dr Digifant Mk2 8v GTI in black with power steering, bumper fogs, electric windows and air-con over steel rims, with Quantum mud-flaps all round (and if I was modifying it then subtle lowering and a late 2 headlamp grille) would be my ultimate Golf. Lovely.
Go for it dude, sounds like you're sold on the Golf!
*was it 89 that the last series with the bigger bumpers came out? can't remember.
