I need to paint lights and grills on a special saloon car and has some insane prices of one company. Can anybody recommend a company or a paint that give a good Chrome effect. I believe the best ones are sprayed over a 2K black or white base..

I've had limited experience with chrome paint in a rattle can, and chrome paint pens. Neither have a lasting shine to them, and can't be polished either.
I'd be inclined to see about vinyl wrapping, or hydro dipping. Theres some very good wraps about, but I've only seen YouTube videos of the chrome effect hydro dipping

I'd agree, chrome paint in aerosols really shouldn't be thought of as chrome, it's more like bright silver. If you lacquer it, it suddenly becomes dull grey. What I'd like is whatever they use to coat the aerosol lids on that stuff, because it's usually much closer to the finish I wanted from the can.
There are two-pack chrome-effect sprays, I haven't found anyone locally to me that does it so I can see it close up. If you look up the episode of Salvage Hunters Classic Cars where they did the Volvo Amazon, I think they did the boot handle in that finish.

Yes i remember the Volvo and i think it was the processes i got priced for to spraying a few headlights and grills. I thought the price was a miss print if I'm honest.
Wrapping is totally out of the question as some of the parts are a very complex shape, small and intricate so it has to be paint or coating of some kind. I have a local guy who says he will have a go but i cant get a price of him atm..
Ill just keep looking, thanks for the info as i agree the spray cans don't look right

There must be something dead shiny... as above, the caps on the spray cans are super shiny, like the plastic badges and grilles on modern cars. Or knobs and dials of household appliances come to think of it.

I have been looking and it can be done but the parts will be heated to 400F.... I don't think I could risk that temperature to be honest and I've known Glassfibre parts deform in the heat of the sun in the past, plus these parts are quiet thin as they are on a race car, my quest goes on but really appreciate your help.

Or knobs and dials of household appliances come to think of it. Which is probably the same as the 'chrome' used on the plastic parts of hotwheels, which can be removed by soaking the part in bleach overnight. I don't know what process is used to apply it to the plastic or if its possible to apply it to any other surfaces 🤔

I probably wont be soaking my car in bleach overnight though. I was thinking about the 'MAN' badge on the front of my lorry, it's plastic but dead shiny. It gets hammered by tfr in the truck washes and still looks shiny after 5 years and 700k.

Wonder how Ford did the higher trim level grill on the mk2 Granada, as that is (now brittle) plastic, and chrome. Actually a layer of the stuff as well, as I have a chunk missing of the highly polished surface on my current one!

Ive seen how its done but they want to charge stupid money for the process, as advised i contacted a Hydro-graphics company and they also can back with an unbelievable quote of £720 the other paint process was £760... that's more than i paid for the paint to do the chassis and the body of the car. I could use all the standard lights and grills cheaper than that, but i wanted to lose weight and not damage the original grills etc if i had a small bump as you can when competing. I will have to roughly work out the square area of all the parts but i doubt it will be more than 1.5 to 2 square foot max. I can see me doing it myself again but will probably leave it until the weather gets a bit warmer. I don't know if anybody else is having similar experiences, i've been building cars all my adult life and used to get great help of companies who used to love to help and also give advice, but these days everyone seems to want to charge top dollar for the smallest amount of work.. A friend of mine a welder by trade wanted to just fill in 1 bolt hole in a stainless steel bracket as he didnt have any S/S wire for his mig. So we went to a company he knew who welded S/S all day long and were set up for it. He asked them how much just to dab a weld on as he would clean it back....the price ? £75 he told them were to stick it. We are all willing to pay I'm sure but none of us want to get ripped off. Once i finish this car its my last as a few of my fellow car friends are finding it the same. Rip off Britain seems to be correct atm.

I appreciate the idea but no it wouldn't sadly, some of the parts are too intricate for anything like that it has to be painted or coated evenly. Tape cant stick to compound curves are tight edges etc
