Firstly. I don't requent Cornwall much, nor do I hang flowery tack in my cars.. Anymore and I don't take photos, edit them and say hashtag vanlife. This won't be another camper build thread with many pictures of my legs hanging out the back of the van under a sunset After much searching for a panel van for transporting tat and kipping in I came across the T4. Said I'd never have another VW.... When I was looking for a t4 some years back I wanted. SWB Panel van not converted Tailgate 2.5tdi with intercooler. At the time all I could find was tarted up camper conversions with windows cut in to them. Similar to most available now really so finding this one, in the above spec, made me think maybe another VW wouldn't be THAT bad..

Usually, when I buy an old vehicle I like to service it, cambelt etc.. You know, the maintenence that you sometimes discover hasn't been done for a while. Not this one. Recent service, cambelt and loads of history including the original bill of sale. Also, two keys! Naturally, the next thing is to drive an ageing VW that you have just purchased to Scotland.. Happy to report we covered 1500 trouble free miles! Used no oil or coolant and returned good fuel economy. After we reached the east coast I started to realise that maybe it won't break down

The van came with a few handy extras to make it a comfy place to kip: Part insulated Leisure battery with split charger Led lighting with conveniently placed switches Chinese diesel night heater, works a treat. A fold out bed. Wrap around insulation cover thingy for the front and window insulator covers. That's enough for me. I don't want fitted units etc as they'll all have to come out for bodywork at some point anyway. Also, it will be useless as a tat hauler. The folding bed tucks away at the side with a ratchet strap. Hill Billy camper!

It wouldn't be a T4 without crusty bits... Overall and for a T4 she isn't that bad. Presents quite nicely from 10ft. The only noticeable body ding is on the sliding door, other than that it's decent.
Rust: Underneath is solid and has the bonus of no waxoil /slop coating it. Corner of the sill/end of door runner needs cutting out. The door runner was really crusty so have vactanned it for now.
Arches are as expected on a T4 so will factor them in over the next couple of years. Rear outriggers are solid.
I've yet to poke at the front steps /inner arches. But I expect it'll need some work, they all do
Drivers side sill is remarkable really (oh yeah side exit and a 5 pot mmm)
Tailgate doesn't have a speck of rust, as is the sliding door bar a small chip.
Windscreen surround is also rust free

Passenger side front. Looks like the front sills have been done judging by the stone chip. They'll be done to a better standard at some point as rust is creeping through

Drivers side arch. Judging by the way it's bubbling I suspect there's been podge in there. There's a bit of orange peel to the paint on this side too

Lots of likes clicked.
I like a multi purpose van.
And, unlike mine, this is long too.

Thought I'd start with the drivers side inner wing first. Easy to do really: Remove grill. Couple of screws and it pops off either side. Fingers remaining in one piece. Remove headlamps (4 nuts per side) Disconnect fog lights Remove screws on inner arches ( missing already so saved a job) Remove bumper. 2 13mm bolts Remove plastic bracket. Push through centres on the clips and remove Undo wing. 3 bolts along the top. Two inside drivers door gap. Two at the bottom. The wing was bonded on along the lower edge so out came the heat gun. Came off with a bit of gentle persuasion.
