I may have they opportunity to buy a low mileage Rover 75 1.8 automatic which I prefer nowadays In BRG Unfortunately the owner one of my parents neighbours has sadly passed away I’ve left his family with it to discuss a price And get back to me, the car is in excellent condition but has no mot due to the circumstances Always Liked these , and it’s a rover personally I’ve always had a thing for any Rover Just think the car has some potential for nice rims and a small lower only say 30mm?? Any opinion on whether they’ve reached the bottom of there value and are becoming a bit sought after?? Hoping to get a sensible negotiation going this week

Bought a 1.8 Tourer new in 2003. Lasted until the engine blew up big time in 2018 with just 50k miles on the clock - the head gasket had already been replaced at 28K miles. They are nice cars and drive well but do have their problems: Door actuators that fail Drop links that forever need replacing The plenum chamber where the ECU lives gets full of water if you don't clean the drain tubes regularly Front tyre wear is heavy Coil springs snap Seats wear Bits of interior trim regularly fall off Rear lights fill with water ...and there is probably more that I can't remember However, in spite of all its faults I still loved it and was sorry to scrap it when the engine blew - it quite simply was virtually valueless at that stage and wasn't worth splashing the cash on. Prices seem to be on the up - especially the ones with the BMW diesel engines. Oh, there is an active owners club but I fell out with them long ago because they all wear rose tinted spectacles and think the cars are the best thing since sliced bread . . Mine, when it was 6 months old:

I had an MGZT - essentially the same car in a party frock - back when they were new and I had no problems.
Mine had the diesel motor, so can't compare there, although if the 1.8 HG is done properly - there are some special procedures to note - that's usually the end of that problem.
I do recall the front tyre were as being a bit on the heavy side too, but not enough to make me think it was particularly remarkable in that regard.
I liked it very much too, sold it for a new Peugeot 407 which was quick but otherwise nowhere near as engaging and had a horrible ride...but that's another story.

I remember when these (like many) could be had for £500...they now seem to be appearing at the £1k mark and rising. 1.8 petrols obviously a bit less desirable given the above issues. BMW-derived diesels are strong units.
I've been very tempted to buy one and slam it on ridiculously inappropriate coilovers but they're not the bargain basement motors they once were (although what is these days?)

That’s my general idea if I buy this one, with some good polished rims, I’ll have to see the valuation they put on the car As I said I’d take it as it is without mot

I picked up a 52 plate estate top spec connoisseur with the BMW M47r 2.0 diesel a couple of months ago for just over £700 with a years MOT. It's on 160,000 miles, still goes well and is a nice place to be can feel a bit claustrophobic, all the pillars are quite chunky, but it is a well put together car. As said, just check under the wipers that the plenum drains are clear otherwise the ECU will sit in a few inches of water when it rains.

I can't honestly remember the last time one I saw on the road. There seems to be a very enthusiastic following for them, though they are mabie a little niche. When they were new I worked at a rover garage. I remember them being very rovery, smooth and solid feeling with the sort of trim that reminded you it was just a little bit posh. I can't say what there like after many thousands of miles as I don't really have experience of that, but they're probably rare enough now that it's worth getting if it's a good one.

I have always liked these too.
In my experience, families in these circumstances either want to see the car "go to a good home" and want very little for them if they think you're the right buyer, or they have an entirely unrealistic notion of the value of the car and want several times it's true value.
I would suggest putting the number into Webuyanycar and getting a baseline idea of what it books for. Then you can decide whether sentiment and/or the car's condition will allow you to go up or down from there when the family get back to you with what they want for it.
But be prepared to walk away when they say they want £5K or something equally ridiculous.

Well the price was negotiated today Tbf I’ve tabled what I believe to be a sensible offer for the car But the owner is seeking £2000 which possibly may be what it’s worth ?? But without mot and requiring a battery and possibly four new tyres I’ve declined at that price They have said they will see if they can get that price for it And will get back to me if they can’t
I’m not to worried either way but I would like to have saved the car from a probable death in the hands of someone that will just daily it until it’s past it’s best

"But the owner is seeking £2000 which possibly may be what it’s worth ??"
It would need to have a 'clean' (no advisories) MoT, new battery and tyres to get anywhere near that price ...low mileage cars that have sat a while usually need any number of odd items during 'recomissioning' (coolant leaks , head gaskets, heater pipes), was this the model that could be difficult to get to meet emissons requirements ?

…the owner is seeking £2000 which possibly may be what it’s worth ?? As said; only with a full (clean) MoT and four new (decent) tyres. Not with a list of advisories a mile long and a set of budget ditchfinders. As it stands, sentiment might see me bid £1000, but if they think they can get double that for it then good luck to them. Sit back and let them try.

My parents had a nearly new facelift 75 1.8 manual around 2004 just before Rover folded, it did always strike me as a very comfortable car and was quite different from the Renault Scenic we'd come from, but it was underpowered.
Don't think we had it long enough to encounter any serious reliability issues! I do have a soft spot for the MG ZT, planned to buy a V6 tourer a few years back but it sold before I got there and I'd love to try a V8 but they're very expensive for what they are

I reckon you get a call in a week or so!
The wife's granddad had a v6 saloon from new, think he racked up 34,000miles in the decade and a bit he owned it. It got all the services in the book though he would stress for weeks before hand over the cost of services vs use it got. It always got the work done in the end. It had a coolant leak that he also stressed over for months. Comfy to sit in but the interior was this cream/yellow that looked like margarine, plus it just looked like it had been styled by a group of Victorian men.

The OP does says it’s ‘low mileage’ (although that can mean lots of things to lots of people) & that one is 95’000, so not low. Comparing apples & pears really

The 2.5 does go very nicely. I hired a brand new one for a long weekend over Christmas 2002 because I needed to go from Canterbury to St Andrew’s in Scotland and back and didn’t fancy subjecting my (then) new girlfriend to the journey in my P4. I remember being impressed with its pace and comfort. I nearly bought a V8 one when Rover folded and there were a handful of new ones sitting around unsold, but I couldn’t raise the cash (and I got cold feet with regard to getting parts etc.).

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the V8 ones fitted with Mustang engines?

There was a nice one for sale on here a good while ago. Was lowered with some nice wheels and looked spot on.
2k is too rich imo. I suspect you’ll be getting a call soon Dan
