really unique slice of vw history. how does the spec differ from european cousins ?
i was dodging around in a 1600 auto astra before my present 1.7D manual estate. tbh ive gotten a bit lazy in my middle age, really miss the 1 foot driving experience round town.

Maybe I'll fall in love with one-foot life! I've more to learn, it has a bit more power than euro spec of the same engine. Has the HM engine from the euro spec mk2 1.6. Different carb too I believe to euro, a keihin (Japanese) with manual choke. Front end is unique too, as is grille, kind of a hybrid between mk1 and mk2. Only came in 5 door. Colour scheme is unique too, only available in blue/white, yellow/white or red/white. That's about all I know! |

Hahah thanks grizz not seen these. Red yellow blue. Particularly enjoyed the 3 cars farting off the aircraft carrier.  The yellow was always the ultimate in my eyes, don't think I've ever seen one in the flesh! Good to know they did exist. |

Like Grizz, I too lived through this era in SA so remember those ads on telly well! They could be seen on every street with almost 380000 units made. They also did an even more budget model called the Chico.  |

Hahah thanks grizz not seen these. Red yellow blue. Particularly enjoyed the 3 cars farting off the aircraft carrier. The yellow was always the ultimate in my eyes, don't think I've ever seen one in the flesh! Good to know they did exist. Citi Golf was and still is a master stoke in sales, marketing and product life extension. It really put a very good car in reach of the grasp of normal people. Opel/Vauxhall/GM was known as the Delta Motor Corporation at the time and made a limpwristed attempt at gaining some of the impetus, as did Ford and Mazda with even lesser offerings of old run out models. I would choose the golf any day.    |

Nice!! They look excellent in white, the friend who sent me the link to this one currently has a lovely blue chico so I'm a fan. Looks good on steels too, maybe steels are the way to go.

Chico was really the essence of the Citi concept. I don't really look at what's on offer in the new market but I feel like this is what's missing these days. Even base spec stuff has so much technology into it, I feel like something with a level of mid 2000's spec but with an emphasis on making it bulletproof and last built with quality stuff is exactly what the lower end of the car market needs, costs saved in all the technology bits could be put into higher quality materials. |

The Aygo/C1/107 were the last of these I think. Dacia probably also with the last version of the Sandero but that type of car is now completely gone.

Things not working so far.
Handbrake light
Choke light
Rear screen heater - then realised it doesn't have a heater
Intermittent wipers - also doesn't have them, not actually a fault
Seat tilt adjustment on both seats
Rear drivers door won't open from outside or inside
Temp gauge
Good news though is it drives really nicely, don't even hate the auto gearbox.
Plus as a bonus, the aftermarket air con seems to blow cold. A miracle surely.
A fun list of little niggles to work on.

I use a yellow Citi Golf when ever I go back to visit the wifes family in Cape Town. Was purchased new by one of her brothers and is now doing sterling work as the family loaner. That and an Alfasud estate.... Lovely. P.  |

Have had my first automatic car for the last 6 months, never really liked them but I am a convert. |

A dodgy door latch on rear passenger door needed investigating, looks like someone else had a go at bodging it. New handle ordered.   Neither the handbrake nor choke lights work. Now choke does (helpfully done by my friend who is nursing the old goat due to my wife banning me from having 3 broken cars on the drive. Outrageous I know.  I was overzealous about the aircon working. It clearly isn't, due to the bl**dy huge hole in the water pipe to the aircon radiator. Good times.  Look at the state of that power cable too!! A very strong vibration at low rpm feels like dud engine mounts so that'll be an urgent job next. The sooner I sell the scirocco (sad face) the sooner I can get this beauty to my house for the love it deserves. Found a guy who sells sticker packs for old citi golfs in South Africa, he whatsapped me and was a really nice dude with an amazing collection of citi golfs and related cars. I'll post them here in a mo. |
