Been a bit fair weather with the citi and just driving it around with no bumper and the plate cable tied on. Quite like the look! But it's time to solve it. Also got the grille off (cracking it along the way ffs), still driving it despite the exposed radiator, in front of the rad is the dead aircon rad so it does have some protection from stones! Drove it 2.5 hours to Brighton and back no drama at all, it always starts and runs so well. The bent bumper bar isn't going to be straightened anytime soon so I bought a replacement off ebay that included a karmann white front bumper. Bit rough but the bar is straight and it's all there. Unfortunately it turns out the bumper bar from a cab isn't the same as the citi, and the original citi bumper won't fit onto the cab bar. The karmann bumper isn't a perfect fit and it's in way worse condition, but I like the extended front bumper look so decided to go for it and fit it. I'll be putting the old boy in for paint at some point (always 'at some point lol') so maybe I can get better fitment then. Lots of fiddling but it's pretty much on, just needs adjustment so it is even, and work out how to attach the sides of the bumper (also different). Also gave it a bit of a sand to clean it up as much as I can so it looks OK from 50 feet. Before After Much less shameful, now just needs plate put on, indicators plumbing in and adjustment for fitment (for even height and pull the sides in). Other jobs down include putting the rear door interior back in. Next challenge is to find the paint codes for this South African model which is proving harder than you'd think. If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears, the code I take from the vin seems to be a different colour (a euro one) when I Google it. I'm probably being a donkey but not found it on the south African forums yet.

A small amount of googling reveals the VWSA colours were VWSA only colours. So the 140 colour code will not translate to any VWAG colour code sadly.

Thanks very helpful and a touch sad - so I'll need to explore getting some shipped from South Africa or do a paint match (probably more realistic!). Cheers!

Good find thanks for sharing. I'll see if I can find any other plates then, I briefly checked the boot but it was raining so I gave up like a softie. Seems there are other plates potentially scattered around. Cheers!

Been a touch quiet doing other things but the citi is sitting there looking sad so I've cracked on with some jobs. Rocker gasket was the first, oil was leaking onto thd manifold and making a smell so I set about replacing the 3 part gasket (2x rubber bits on the ends, and cork for the main edges. They're cr@p). Used a mk3 full rubber one piece gasket instead. Except I tried to cut corners and didn't swap out the studs in the head, and of course they are different and have a thick neck on them (while the new ones don't). Fired it up after finishing the job, left it to warm up, 2 mins later I've got oil bl00dy flooding from the block onto my nice new driveway, oil smoke everywhere. Not told the wife about the oil yet... Swore a lot and gave up. Came back and did the job properly, swapping out the studs (which were seized in there tight). Learnt a new method, the percussion method, vice grips while hitting the studs with a hammer. Worked a treat. No leaks now, cleaned up the oil as much as I could, needs a good drive to burn it all off. About 9 months ago I ordered a new set of stickers. They arrived! I'll fit them when I do the paint. Which I keep saying I'll do. This year it has to happen. Not quite the right sticker, mine isn't a sport. I've got the right engine, they just didn't make a sport with an auto. But I like the look so that is that!! Lastly, bought some new (to me) wheels, le castallet (probably spent that wrong) 14 inch forged jobbies from a mk2. They're looking great, they'll be getting a splash of white paint very soon... Ditch finders are good too, although online tells me I will die the first time it rains (Infinity INF04).

If they are still wearing their polished finish it would be a shame to paint them, they look in great condition. Will suit it either way.

Fair point, 3 of them are polished (in need of being done again but I could do at home) and one of them had been painted silver (well).
So either I strip the painted one and try and polish, or stick to the citi roots with white wheels.
1st World problems I guess 😂

I’d be torn on what to do there if it were me. 😬

Cheers yep I used this gasket type on my previous scirocco too and it was perfect. Those cork monstrosities have been the bane of my life with every vw I've owned.

Popped the wheels on to see if they fit. Had to remove rear spacers, the inner lip will need some massaging to stop rubbing. Fine without though. Good enough for now! Pretty pleased with them! They really suit the car IMO. I think they bring together the big bumpers and lows very well. In white they'd look the business whilst paying homage to the original appearance of the car.

Thought I'd take the citi down the road to check for rubbing. The rear wheel was totally locked up, thought it might be the handbrake sticking as it has sat for a month, it loosened a touch but made horrible noises. My friend reminded me that I've used the longer bolts, but removed the rear spacers so the bolts are touching the drum and locking it up. So I've given at the rear arch with a big hammer, bashed the inner lip up a touch. I taped it with fabric tape first don't worry - paint is all fine. Came out well, so savers back on and a quick test drive reveals no rubbing! Result. Rear looks a bit nicer with the spacers too. Decided I'm going to commit to a home painting job, see how I get on. They need to be white. Bought 320 grit wet and dry, lots of hycote white gloss paint plus clear lacquer, alcohol wipes and some high fill primer too for the scratches. I'll be as patient as I can and do it properly, we shall see...

Stereo time! The front doors have speaker holes but they're covered by plastic lining and also have a bl**dy giant metal bar thing that seems to be part of the window winder. Did lots of thinking and considering, then bent it back with brute force. Winder still works perfectly so all good. Managed to make enough space to get a 5 inch kenwood (period correct 😂) into the space and bolted down on 3 of the 4 fixing points, that'll do nicely. A friend has a citi, but his doesn't have the giant window winder bar thing, plus he has speakers mounted on the door card with a grille. Decided against cutting the door card, I like the original look too much. It might muffle the sound a little (not gonna drill holes) but that's OK. Wired up a stereo too (taken from the herald), there was no wiring for a, stereo as standard (blanking plate). All buttoned up and looking stealth! On investigating the wiring for the stereo (using the ignition wiring) I found all manner of horrors. Not even I would do wiring for my ignition like this! Tbf never undo the insulation tape from someone else's project, god knows what lurks. I cleaned it up, added the stereo lines, soldered it and wrapped them back up so I never have to look at them again. Next up are 2 rear speakers that I got out of the doors of the audi tt (as part of the interior I've installed) to go into the back, plus run new sub wiring and a thumper in the boot, to shake the interior even more loose.

Stereo is in, speakers installed in the front doors (hidden behind the door card), all wiring has been run underneath the left side carpet and the sub thumps away happily! I still need to put rear speakers in their proper position under the grilles or on a parcel shelf. For now I'm using 2 speaker pods I made originally for the herald. It sounds pretty good and unlike my old escorts, everything doesn't vibrate and rattle which is nice. The sound is really well insulated actually. Managed to use various rubber bungs to run wires into various metal parts. I had a spare rear window heater switch so I've added that as an on off switch for the sub. Couldn't find any wiring diagram of the switch so it was a matter of trial and error. Interestingly, with one combination of the wiring there was a tiny trickle of power still going through the remote wire when the switch was off. I tried a different combination and found a 'no trickle' state so I'm happy the sub won't wreck my battery over time and leave me stranded. All buttoned up!
