Carry on like this and you'll have the most luxurious Canta in the world. You'll have to invent your own model designation. I did think that the colour gives the interior a hint of gentleman’s club. Maybe worth working with that look and swapping the seats for a nice deep buttoned leather armchair 🤔😂 Either way it is a big improvement 🙂

Frustrating thing to do upholstery, but very rewarding when you stand back and look at your efforts.

You could smooth the panel joins with a wipe of ordinary body filler. Although it's a bit late for that. Scrim foam helps too, but that does mean doing the job twice. Are you going to trim the overlapped edges? If the glue is as good as you say it is, then a new razor blade and a good straight edge should provide an invisible joint. Once you've cleaned off the blood.... Carry on like this and you'll have the most luxurious Canta in the world. You'll have to invent your own model designation. Good to see you yesterday. And as discussed, the way to go is not the way I am going. Maybe I should sell this on already…… Let a clever chap complete and enjoy it. Well, on the one hand it looks like you've taken on your own version of 'The labours of Hercules' ... BUT, the end (?) result does look heaps better ! and , it should add , oh, another fiver to the price when you sell it ! Yup, not much room for profit, but I would take an extra fiver. …and , it should add , oh, another fiver to the price when you sell it… Shhhh! Encouragement to finish yes; encouragement to up the price I end up paying for it, no. 🤣🤣 I am not sure who will own this magnificent turd ultimately, but it will be fun. I know this nd have to keep reminding myself. Also, some of the guide holes look terrible right now, but once the seats, seat belts etc are back in…… It will not be spectacularly wibblepoo. Making excuses on a Sunday morning not to go out and get started on the next bit of irritation. So yesterday, nickwheeler visiting, weather, looking at an Audi A2 and the heavy humid heat all made good excuses to keep walking away from the Canta. In the end I closed shop after 18.00 but at least side number two of the body was done. As much as I really do not like this little car at the moment, I have to keep reminding myself….. This is not a car in the traditional sense, it is a mobility aid. Imagine nailing a chicken coop to a Chinese mobility scooters chassis in a shed, somewhere on mainland Europe. Then bringing a couple of them into England 20 years ago…… No support, no spares stock, no knowledge and certainly not much to work with. After 20 plus years of very low mileage use, but a flurry of abuse, possibly years of just standing in someone’s driveway or back yard, it is removed and given a really good, short burst of extreme abuse. Fabrics have perished and aged in the 20 plus years since it was built, plastics are brittle and still most people don’t give a sh1t about a Canta LX. Enter the weirdos…… why go mainstream when you can try swim without arms or legs ehhhh? So yesterday I started by trimming a couple of small bits, then ground to a halt when Nick came around (great excuse to walk away and make coffee) Next job…….. Disassemble and remove the rear light I previously installed. Including some wires joined by the devils joiners. Opened area to work. Measure, cut, shape, glue and fit. Then the rain stopped play. So I closed shop, went for a drive to look at an abandoned Audi A2 three miles from where I live. Unfortunately if you check its current status, it seems a new V5c ownership document has been issued, so someone has a cheap car. This is the inspiration for a 20 plus year old car being given a cheap but awesome new look. Thread here: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/225226/audi-a2-retro-classicAnyway, later the weather cleared again and I went back to the garage, loaded with guilt at wasting so much time that could have been spent on polishing the turd instead. So I completed the wheel arch box and shut shop. Next stop will be to get started on the rear door, then the side doors and roof. 11.00 on a Sunday morning and still not made it to the shop. Soon…….

I think that perfectly illustrates how some experience makes for a better job; the N/S with fewer joints looks so much better, and the seat belt will mask the visible joint on the door pillar. The next one you do could have the horizontal part of the box sewn on, and you'd have what a professional trimmer would expect.

So Sunday came and went, weather was again a bit iffy. Bits of rain, just enough to support my overall loss of my normal MoJo. So eventually I made it out the house by 12.00, where are the days when I would be in the garage by 04.00 to work three hours on the teardrop build before breakfast, a shower and heading out for work. Today was the rear door, a job I approached with anticipation of failure, based on the job so far. I now had a “door handle” diagonally across the frame and a lock and opening mechanism to work around. So I photographed the door mechanism and removed it. Also removed the number plate light fitting. Then started cutting in the bottom and side pieces, nothing is straight or simple…… Many curves later, side pieces fit. And then glued in place. Followed by measurements for the flat surface and a piece cut off the roll. After some fighting, it was glued in place to a standard that is aligned with the quality of the car. Looking at it along with the drivers side interior….. a lot of brown. Shutting the door, you have even more brown. But it was starting to look like a unit, if you could even dare say that. While I was playing with my car, Sally was at home working on her glass pictures. She collects the glass and pottery shards when walking the dog. These pictures are sold on Etsy and Vinted (not by her) for £25-35 and if you look at the whole process, it’s actually not a lot of money for what does into it. Proud of her for sure. And later in the evening, mate Matt, pegasus sent a pic of his son, who saw the Vanta, and wanted one too…… So he built his son a Canta. And before you could blink, the weekend was over again. Thanks for the reminder and observation. I guess you are right to some extent. I have wondered about the approach I have taken, whether a textured bed liner paint and roller would have been a better option. BUT…… I realise too, it would be easier, but the irregular surfaces, loads of panel overlaps and joins, rivets etc would still be there. When I look at this car up close, it is hard to believe they cost around €16000.00 new, and 22000 of them were sold as far as I know, during the production run. As nickwheeler said to me over the weekend, scrim foam, filler etc would have smoothed stuff out, but then it all costs money and time every time you hit the Buy it Now button. This is never ever going to be a beautiful thing, but hopefully a bit tidier. Case in point…… Today on my FB feed, a pic of the MX5 that I got for Nicola to compensate for selling the 1959 Ford Anglia 100E It was scruffy, had rust, issues etc when I bought it, then I spent way too much money on it, lost more than 1/2 the cost, selling it to out local serial car purchaser…… But it looked great when I finished it, like the Not a Project, Chevy Blazer did. This Canta must not get to that point. For Sale pic: Right, maybe the traffic has thinned out by now, earlier the A2/M2 had a 60 minute delay.
