My wife has an A2 colour concept that we've owned since 2017. It's now got a few issues so we're thinking of selling and upgrading. I love the car and I'm tempted to keep it as a project and sell on the classic mini that's serving as a garage ornament at the moment. Any love for these?

I like them and think a little lowering and nice wheels make for a very nice little car.
Are parts readily available, shared with other VAG models?

Great cars, albeit flawed. I love the geeky low weight, high gearing approach to economy. Wasn't so keen on light weight and mediocre damping meaning the whole car rocked when the wipers were on fast.
I'd happily have one as a daily if a low mileage clean example were about.

I am vote yes. The brainchild of VIP, built at the AutoBahn, mostly by him, but the rest of us helped where required. Photos by dbizzle at RetroRides Weekender 2021, stolen from here.

Another yes here.
This is a good example of how a car ahead of the curve is tricky to class as retro, as it's something which hasn't dated as much as cars sold back then. That, and the PD units were unsellable on the emissions standards quite some time ago (I think Euro 5 saw the end of PD engined cars)
A very forward thinking car for the time, and with an interesting story behind it.
Good cars climbed in value a while ago. I could not believe how much folks paid for these quite recently.

Good tdi ones have been strong money for a while now. Especially if high spec.
I know of a couple of very affluent people who bought them new as ‘wife’s cars’ 20 years ago now, and just won’t get rid of them, even though they’re ‘ new car every two years’ sort of people. Most other owners seem to be very long term now too. The only thing that is going to force them to get rid of them is clean air zones. You can Probably guess my opinion on that.
I had a 1.4 petrol for a couple years and it was a great car. My only criticisms of them are the size of the boot opening compared to the Laos space, and the electrical fragility that plagues VAG cars of that era. Proably the last truly decent output from the VAG stable.

Ours sits unmodified as yet Really in two minds about selling but available time to work on it and our Mini is whats going to drive it. The sensible thing to do is sell both projects and get something ready to go that can be tinkered with.

We've found that there's folks who think it's retro and folks who think it's only a few years old in equal measure. I worked for the VAG group in 2003 and really wanted one on the lease scheme only for them to be withdrawn due to Audi losing money on every one.

Good ones are starting to make good money. Ours is more of a project though so can only dream of that kind of price

Probably quite expensive to manufacture.

Went to see Mercdan68 find. Looks really tidy, checked MOT and tax history. New V5 issued 5 July. Someone possibly rescued a bargain.

I really like these and have had three of the 1.4 petrol cars, though with the last one, despite being a good low mileage car, I was getting the feeling that it actually was a 20 year old car. Stuff started to go wrong, which is one thing on a properly old car that just has wiring, but quite another on a car with lots of electronics. Various plastic wiring connectors were getting brittle. Light bulbs are just about impossible to change unless you have child size hands. Hard to work on the motor too. But I loved the looks (even though you can't call them pretty) and the design and the ally body. As has been said, most people thought it was a couple of years old. You can tell when the shocks are kippered as the suspension gets very crashy. Also, fitting large wheels and tyres destroys the ride and fuel economy. There's an active owners club in the UK.

The clamp has yet to be removed I’d say that’ll be towed very soon……log book Change possibly an attempt at getting away with the no tax fines ?
