I don’t know if you are aware of the best way to re fill coolant, as they can be a bit of a b@stard to fill on these without getting an air lock. Best method is from the metal header tank on top of the engine, disconnect the tube coming from the turbo, and slowly fill through that with a funnel, slowly so it doesn’t gulp and burp. If you are replacing that turbo, give me a shout if you are selling it mine is a little on the noisy side! Have a read on my lexus build thread. I'm the master of burping and bleeding cooling systems 🤣🤣 (not being pedantic just a lot of practice haha).. but thanks. All advise is welcomed. I'm still not sure what if anything to do about the turbo. Part of me says rebuild it in current spec an get it mapped as far as I can go safely, part of me says upgrade while it's in bits (at more cost/time).. If I replace it il let you know tho! Cheers

Yeh sorry that reads a bit like filling coolant in general. I mean specifically on an Impreza, as a lot of people, even garages, don’t seem to be able to do it without the matrix sounding like a central heating system full of air.

Only saw this thread yesterday. Wishing you well with the car and it seems to be an ideal choice for your needs. The wheel colour change, lights and the smaller exhaust have transformed it, looks great. I did take note of the uprated turbos being mentioned and the new ECU...this should get very interesting very soon! Bookmarked.

Yeah it seems to do everything I want from a car at minute, still "practical " enough to use with the kids in. And like all my toys it's broken so I've got something to fix/improve. Haha I "think" il be leaving the turbo alone for now. Just so I can get it back together and working asap. There's definitely scope for sillyness in the future tho 🤣 Cheers

Quick little Sunday morning update. Need a new turbo inlet pipe to replace the nakerd standard one.. There not particularly cheap standard, an silicone ones seem very not cheap (read £250 from RCM not cheap, or £100 for a Chinese special) One popped up locally on face ache for £20! Il have that then. Bloke also had some stainless (but surface corroded) stainless headers too! Too cheap to not buy 🙈.. Il clean them up and heat wrap them before I fit them. I also need to measure some of the outlets up on the turbo intake pipe. Because I'm going to get rid of all the breathers running back in and run a catch can set up on it!! That's likely last update til next week now. Unless I have a beer while I'm away and order more childish stuff 🤣 Cheers

Whats on the car at the moment? Cast headers?
If you want to offset the cost of the above, I'd be open to purchasing them from you.

Most important question is when’s this bigger turbo going on? No point being this far in without changing that too 🤷🏻♂️

It's being considered, but I don't want it say for weeks waiting for bits. Plus I'm trying to be sensible with money... Also, snows forecast.... I want to go and do snow drifting on the lanes 😂😂

Hybrid bits for mine, jump to a td05 or VF (then have to alter feeds, returns, downpipe etc)... Don't worry you've known me long enough to know it will get messed with 🤷😂 Also, regardless, even on the standard turbo it will show that old datsun of yours a clean set of heals 😂😂

But tbh I'm trying to be sensible with spending. Chances are il play in snow once, then jetwash it off and use my van 😂 Wel see what pots looking like after Xmas. Cheers

Tiny little none exciting update. The eBay seller has refunded 50% on the exhaust!! I've picked my lip up about the whole saga,so that's staying (and made a very cheap 3 inch turbo back system)! Also ordered some new cleaning stuff. Thanks to royal fails strikes and what not something that was sent royal mail 24h has taken best part of 3 weeks to come!! Not obviously used any of it yet. But it seems to get rave reviews and the offer it was on made it too cheap not to try (£25 for lot!!) Hopefully my second water crossover pipe turns up soon and il be able to get it back together early next week! Cheers

With an STI you have closer ratios with the 6 speed box, so easier to keep it in the range. I think the lag may be too much for a 5 speeder, my personal opinion of course, but I think a wrx is fine as a quick ish road car. I can happily sit on the arris of a lotus Elise around a back lane and have left a mk2 focus rs for dust anyway despite giving away around 50 horses to it, and rarely go near the red line. For an example a prodrive pack wrx is nearly half a second quicker to 60 than an sti because of gearing. And, saying that even our wrx with td04 feels laggy compared to my twin scroll legacy.

Oh and a little bit of getting used to drifting in snow is required so you would need a fairly large empty car park. I found that in the snow trying to play because the power is a 50/50 split it just wants to drift in quite a wide arc, and when you lift off it can carry on sliding for a little longer than anticipated. You can’t really play too much with the handbrake either because of the awd system.

Loving this thread, I’d love a gc8 but the price of good examples is well on the rise. Looking forward to more updates.
The ez car care products are good but the delivery times are abysmal my order took 3 weeks and at the time there was no strikes.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a little faster when it looks like a bucket full of smashed crabs parked next to the old Datsun 😉
