1990 Mazda RX-7 (FC) Turbo II Convertible, 102,500 miles
I bought the car earlier this year to scratch the rotary itch, since then it's been on numerous trips including a road trip to the French Alps. All of this was taken in its stride and despite what you might expect of a 32 year old rotary powered car it has been a reliable companion. It handles well, with light steering that loads up nicely when cornering. The engine boosts well and pulls strongly. It feels like it's making all 200 horsepower, backed up by solid compression results (photos available) and reliable hot starting (video available). The engine was rebuilt ~50,000 miles ago and I've used pre-mix to keep it healthy. The brakes have a nice feel to them and aren't snatchy or over assisted, they held up well on mountain passes. The stainless steel exhaust gives it a nice sound without being too loud or obnoxious.
In my ownership it has had new matching Pirelli Cinturato P1 tyres as the car came with some very vintage tyres. It also came with an elderly broken aftermarket stereo so I have replaced it with a new Android Auto / Apple Carplay Pioneer double din unit and new OEM equivalent Pioneer speakers. Judge for yourself but I think it looks fairly tasteful for an aftermarket unit!
The electric folding roof works in all its slightly awkward glory and a tonneau cover is included. Unfortunately, there are some tears in the vinyl around the join to the body, these have been patched by a previous owner which keeps the worst of the weather out but ideally needs redoing or a new roof fitting.
The bodywork is solid, and the paint is good and bright for its age with few stone chips. I think it has been resprayed at some point in the past but not sure when. The wheels aren't perfect, but they clean up well and all the centre caps are present.
Overall, it's an honest car that will put a smile on your face and gets a surprising amount of admiration from all walks of life. Also, it has pop-up headlights, what more could you want?
