We got a tirfor winch to help with making sure trees fell where we wanted them (and tightening up a zip wire...) and they are powerful if slow. Of course what you really need is a tractor. If you were closer I'd have dropped one off already. James

Cars in the workshop. That’s what we like to see. 🙂
Worth the battle now you’ll be able to work on them a bit, well if you get any downtime from the house adventures!

yes i will have to put some anchors in the ground for the dyno as well . productive day today . i hoicked the mini out of the hay barn , and found some boards to keep it draught and leaf free ish . also went round the back , and bent the tin back a bit .. from this .. to this.. after a sweep it was now ready for the red entity, which fired up very well , squealed its fanbelt for a while, which then broke , but , apart from that ,with a bit of a lsd spinfest, we were in .. i snugger her up as tight as i dared to the wall .. and then managed to get the little spud in there too .. not the biggest of gaps .. so thats three in the hay barn .. next up is the tvr s2 , with the broken door hinge , let me tell you , getting in the driving seat from the passenger door , with a shoulder full of rotator cuff pain , was a fun zen test lol. she fired up well , and i drove down the lane then back up for a run up to the water margins , was a little sideways at one point , but got to the red brick path , baulked on the first try ,but i reversed and she was clear over , and off down the wooden rd to happiness , and a chance to dry out .. so thats this part of the fleet finally all under cover .phew . i shut the door to the sound of old compatriots chatting in a companionable way to each other .. look ... no cars ! i have realised , this area would be a very bad place for a car port , all the water coming down the fields comes out at the bottom of that wall , so it would be a damp condensation fest . next i stooped water coming into the area under the window in the big room , by using tha x8 sealant to block up the cracks in the lintel .. those have been cracked for as long as the previous owners had the hs so 92 , and havent moved , we think its ivy and water freezing damage . next i had a look at my new central heating filter .. instructions say fit to the return , however, it would be so much easier to put on the pump feed like so ... so i may just break my passive conformist behaviour pattern , and go rogue with it . i also started having a go at cleaning up Medusa , which was a bit rusty .. bit of 80 grit .. its going to be a lot of work to get her back to sparkling . oh and lastly i was waffling on about the derelict roofing i was clearing up , here's how its looking so far .. And before anyone gets their yellow fluorescent i'm important jacket in a bunch , yes it is 2% asb /cement mix . And yes i have in the past taken 14 8x4 ft sheets to the oxon local tip ,with no problem . so a good day , not a lot of rain for a change , but colder 5c with a strong wind ... oh lastly , the scrap man came , so all the metal is gone from the corner and drive . regards robert

My local tip still takes cement asbestos as long as its double bagged so might be worth looking into to see if one near you do this?

Also to add with the filter, the only reason I can see for putting it on the return is that it removes the crud from the system before it hits the pump.
On the basis that the pump has probably already had more than its fair share of crud its probably 'pump' enough to take a bit more!

A great read as always, and making big strides too! Your plumbing shenanigans inspired me to finally get off my and do something about the hideous plumbing all over the walls in our downstairs loo, so thank you! We now have one tidy pipe which I can box in, instead of three of the things snaking all over the place... Carry on! James

next i had a look at my new central heating filter .. instructions say fit to the return , however, it would be so much easier to put on the pump feed like so ... so i may just break my passive conformist behaviour pattern , and go rogue with it . I assume that the picture orientation is wrong and when installed the "pot with magnetic filter is vertical" This enables you to dose the system via the pot with cleaner or protection fluids without system drain down I have similar ready to fit after winter and like you I'm going to have to fit after the pump rather than before the boiler because of the pipework layout

oh ,thats a good point viva , i had not thought of the temperature , oh well , it's on now , and after a really long period of bleeding , i got heat , i was disappointed at first since the sitting room only mangaged 48-50c , on a boiler temp of 75 , but now a few hours later it's at 62c , much better .maybe still air in the system .

My understanding is the filters are fitted to the return because the modern boiler heat exchangers can't live with even small particles (I'd guess then have smaller channels, turbulators etc like a modern high efficiency car rad).
I'd imagine you have good old fasioned cast iron heat exchanger so shouldn't be a problem.

Ditch digging today. Along under the big room window. As you can see. It’s gravelly mud and a membrane. Not sure if that’s a good idea. All thr French drains I have seen or sone were just a ditch ,gravel , and pas de membrane. Next. Guesses on a self addressed envelope as to what this is doing ,, Hopefully if I dig it up Thr roof doesn’t fall off. Regards Robert. 😳

I would think that’s a pipe leading into a soakaway.
A permeable membrane would stop some migration of gravel, and make it easier to dig out periodically to sift out the silt, but would contribute to it being prone to silting up quicker.
French drains work well, but they’re not maintenance free. It’s a compromise between relatively small amounts of work and expense now, with an ongoing requirement to dig it out every few years, or spending a chunk of cash and effort on laying out a proper drainage system with removable gulley lids that can be cleaned quickly and easily.
