Never, in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be posting about a Nissan Micra on Retro Rides. But it’s 2022 and we’re all very liberal and as always, Retro Rides is a broad church.
The car - A 1998 Nissan Micra 1.3 (yay) GX (meh) CVT (the jury is out on this).
It was my Nan’s car, which she bought new in 1998 having had her Nissan Bluebird written of after someone drove into her. Well, track forward 24 years and the little Micra has covered less than 14k miles, ferrying her between The Con Club, the British Legion and various tea dances. Alas, my Nan passed towards the back end of last year having put in a 102 year shift.
Track forward many months and her car needed to go.
It hadn’t been used in a couple of years and I was reluctant to take it on. I’m in the middle of a major renovation of our house and I didn’t want a project.
So, last weekend I popped out the plugs, hit the bores with some fogging oil (for men) and popped in some new plugs. Whilst there I put in some fresh petrol and a new battery.
Will it start having being sat for nigh on 3 years? Pah, of course, this is a Nissan, a Nissan from a time when Nisssan made simple things that worked well. The 75bhp cracked into life and settled into a perfectly stable little idle.
By the time I drove it to the MoT station the breaks had freed up too. It’s now had a service and given a years ticket too, with a clean sheet I might add (not sure I remember the last time I had a car that got a clean sheet).
What am I going to do with it? I have no idea, for now I’ll enjoy it and try and get to some shows with it. My local show Classic Cars on the Quay allow vehicles 2001 and older.
Gotta say, this little motor (Mabel) is growing on me.
When I can work out how to load a photo from my iPhone I’ll get one loaded. I know I know, if there’s no photo it never really happened 😁
