Just over a week ago I bought a Rover P6 V8
After a few miles on the motorway it started to lose power. I pulled over and rang the previous owner. He thought it could be the filter between the pump and the carbs. He always filled it up when using but I had set off with only half a tank. The orange/ brown colour of the fuel in the filter suggested this was the problem
I had 70 miles to go so carried on. It stopped and started several times until 8 miles from home I couldn't get it to start again
This is what was coming from the tank
The next day I drained the fuel, replaced the filter and put 40 litres of E5 in
The fuel coming through is clean but it's become tricky to start and idles unevenly
It seems to drive ok but is hard to start after a run
The plugs, leads distributor cap and coil are new. If I didn't know about the fuel I would think it could be an ignition problem
My thoughts are some dirt may have got past the filter into the carbs. If it has I don't know how to check or what to do about it
I tried some carb cleaner but it didn't seem to do much
I don't know if running it more may help but I'm worried about breaking down and / or maybe damaging something. It certainly smells a bit fuelly but that could be normal 🙂
The previous owner has been helpful and I believe him when he says he never had this sort of problem

Hi, Yes, it's probably got into the carbs. You will have to clean out the float bowls. If they're HS6s you can get away with just dropping the bowls off, if they're HIF6s then you will have to remove the carbs off the manifold to take take the bottom cover off.

I cleaned out the carbs. This was inside I fitted one of these The fuel coming out is on the left and the stuff going in is on the right After an hour And the next day next to some new fuel I thought it may be ok with the new filter. I also thought about running a second filter right next to it. But i thought really i should get the stuff out of the tank So i removed the tank and this is what comes out with it The trouble now is i can hear loose debris in the tank but it doesn't pour out. I think the baffles are getting in the way. What next? Thanks

That is rancid, going to take quite a bit of flushing. Are new tanks available for these? Might be worth biting the bullet if so otherwise it might come back again in a year or two.

The POR15 tank sealing kit is available from Frost, probably what you’re thinking of. It’s a bit of a process to use, but I’ve used it on my Daimler tank with success, and I know friends who’ve used it with success also.
A low tech fix is to take the tank off the car, pour in some gravel / nuts and bolts, and a bunch of hot soapy water and shake it a bunch. Some people tie them to cement mixers!
Then a whole bunch of flushing out, making sure you got all the stones / nuts out, and it will be a lot cleaner inside.

When I recommissioned a Triumph 2.5 PI a few years back, I had similar issues.
In that case it wasn’t rust but fossilised hydrocarbon crud that was loosened by fresh, ethanol-containing fuel. The PI has a big filter with replaceable element and I soon got fed up with emptying what looked like coffee grounds out of the bowl and replacing yet another element.
I removed the tank expecting rust but found only thick, flakey gunge. I soaked it flushed it with hot caustic and pressure washed it as far as possible through the filler and gauge ports. That got it clean enough, and no rust found. I also renewed the lines as part of the EFI conversion.
Good luck Nick

It should be a lot easier to get back out.

I took the tank to Morrisons and used their jet wash on it. It seemed to remove quite a bit of debris. I then rinsed it a few times with petrol. The colour is now pretty clear consistently although still with a slight red tinge. And although i can still hear particles moving around inside i'm not sure i can do more at the moment I did get quite a lot of this stuff out With more in these So it's all back together with the fuel coming from the in-line filter looking very close to normal It ran a little rough initially but better the second time of starting. I will try and take it for a run today and see how it is

Looks like you've cracked it. I wouldn't worry about the residual filth in the tank. Most of it will probably sit on the bottom and the filter will catch anything that does suck through.

I took it for a 10 mile drive and so far so good. It was a little rough on start up but settled down when driving. It's quite strong on the fumes which might just be the way it is or maybe it could do with some tuning. I've got it booked into Mini Sport rolling road so I should find out more about it then 🙂
