Pleasure to be working on this, vaguely nerve-wracking given the speed and power involved, when it's up and running I'd recommend standing back...

On the sort of reversed 3-wheeler Tumbler chassis, how do you get a rear wheel off on the side of the road if you get a flat?

This last weekend I built this hi-tech test stand for the turbine. Only the finest one-way pallet was used. Wheeled out the fuel and start cart and did a few checks. Even more hi-tech as the start cart is Dexion based Did I wire up the batteries correctly? Yup but both need charging. Could I to get a start ? Nope. No volunteers available for fire control or manual fuel cutoff also I need one final fuel tail. Curse these mixed imperial and metric couplers. At least I have solved the filter problem with a new Sytec unit. Blue one too small with gravity fed fuel for testing. Why do I need a filter? Because I have had to chase out every tapped hole on the hydraulics tank I'm temporarily using for fuel and even with vacuum and oily rag tank clean out I can't be sure that I've got every bit of detritus. Not a fan of stripping the burner down because one of the 6 fuel sprayers is blocked. Today after visiting my favourite trade counter and going through umpteen bins at Hyphose we have a contender Start this weekend? Looks possible but in the meantime I had an email asking if I was interested in this. It's a French Djinn reaction rotorcraft where compressed air is tapped off the turbine and fed to orifices on the rotor tips Orifice Bit flimsy though so it's a no from me.

The pallet wood seems to be well finished and oiled.
I would not be surprised.

I think I’d sooner risk taking to the air in something knocked up out of old pallets than one of those Djinn contraptions. 😱

My comment should have been that it looks like a challenge for someone younger, like you * The sea was softer and luckily shallow enough ** Picture from t'internet. This was the deluxe multi-coloured version

Can you register a helicopter as a microlight to get round red tape?
I suppose being French a "sans permis" may be more appropriate. Also is that a J engine on top of the turbine on the yellow one?

Can you register a helicopter as a microlight to get round red tape? Too heavy at around 500kgs as a Microlight. I suppose being French a "sans permis" may be more appropriate. Also is that a J engine on top of the turbine on the yellow one? To keep weight down they had a starting handle to begin with. I'd like to see that being demonstrated. Then they had a strap-on auxiliary Lavalette 49cc two-stroke as in the picture and finally ended up with the electric start they should have begun with.

While I'm faffing around with hoses and pallets, the brains of the operation ( smithysshed ) is doing deep thought and CAD on the reduction box design. One of the things to deal with is bearing lubrication and cooling. Harry has come up with a way to lubricate the bearings without too many oil pipes cluttering up the place No news on the elusive chassis though.

Bookmarked this one. Can I ask what the 46000 rpm changes in the design of a gearbox? I suppose a few superduper bearings are a thing here, as would decent balancing of everything rotating at that speed. What You have drawn, pretty much looks like this: xtremezuksoffroad.com/shop/suzuki/samurai/transfer-case/6-51-transfer-case/Just a thought if the making it yourself bit turns out more challenging than you thought...

Great fun to be a part of this, it's a properly engaging thing to design. Main considerations for MEGA high speed are balance as you say, also oiling (oil doesn't realy stay on gears at that speed, you need to really tell it to stay there by jetting it at the point the gears mesh) and stiffness of things has to be pretty extreme, you can think of a solid shaft as a skipping rope, whipping around and bending. The bearing hubs will be machined 0.2mm eccentric so gear mesh can be adjusted from "textbook" to "that reaaalllyy bends when we run it aaahhhhhh" if need be. Bearings have been easier than you may expect, Mr Frankenhealey (metaphorically) thrust a catalogue of various ones that are suitable infront of me. We're well above the sensible limits for things so it won't be competing in the next 2CV 24hr race, but should blatt about for a few times up a hill or down a runway before munching another bit. (Just putting that caveat in there so when it does once it's unveiled you all don't think i'm a prized plum)

Extreme balancing and attention to detail. God you've made me bi-polar or more bi-polar than I was ten minutes ago. I searched and searched for an off the shelf gearbox but huge prices and long, long Covid induced deliveries put us on the D-I-Y track. So I've gone from dancing round the room to looking at Suzuki sites and trying to get my head round this. I will go into a huddle with Harry and report back. Cheers
