Hi all, I've lurked around these parts for a long time but never really had anything "thread worthy". A couple of dull ish classic restos I didn't take many photos of and a few pieces of 2 wheeled tat, but nothing to set the world alight. I mentioned my current project on the other narrowboat thread and it garnered some interest, so here's some info and hopefully a rolling build thread. As a background, when I was 19 I decided that student accommodation was utterly rubbish and that buying a boat to live on was a good idea, so I worked my bum off selling second hand bicycles and bought this: Only it didn't look like that, it was half sunk, didn't run and didn't have much of a fitout. I then spent the university summer holiday refitting it and getting it liveable, and it's been a rolling (floating?) resto ever since. It's a Highbridge 32, a fibreglass canal boat from the late 70s. Think of it of the Matra Rancho of boats. Anyway, 5 years on I decided I wanted something a bit bigger, so at the start of this year I was looking to build a boat. The world went a bit south, the cost of steel to scratch build went up £15k, I was despondent. I did what most of us seem to do when faced with any excuse and looked on Ebay, and low and behold there was a very cheap narrowboat. I put a bid in, no-one else did so 3 days later I owned 50ft of problem. In theory it's a fairly unremarkable make (Harborough Marine) and needs loads of work, so should make no sense to do. But that; a) Isn't what it's all about b) Isn't the case, as it's already had £10k of steel chucked at it (a new baseplate and enough steel to replace the hull sides) It's a bit poorly, but quite a lot of progress has been made since I bought it in May. Some filling in to do, in more ways than one...

Looking forward to this, I deliver to at least 2 narrow/wide boat builders a week in Liverpool, there seems to be at least half a dozen of them round here.

Just watched your original boat on the channel four programme. Very interesting showing your start up boat. Looking forward to seeing how this bigger boat comes along.

Airnimal wheels and a 105 groupset shoehorned onto a Raleigh 20 shopper bike. Genuinely quick, very twitchy, I love it but i've had it described as anything from "horrible" to "unrideable" by people who have tried it.

Interesting stuff - post some details up of the bike too ! I recognised the R 20 frame, did it need some massaging to fit the cogs ? James

I think it looks cool smithysshed , small wheeled bikes for the win. I've always been meaning to do something similar with my Gazelle Kwikstep (which doesn't fold, but splits).
Sorry for derailing this thread!

The bottom bracket needed to be rethreaded, the rear dropouts are brazed in out of a road bike, the forks are cut down and re brazed road bike items and the headset has been worked over. There's a decent FB page called "Modified Small Wheelers Official" that's dedicated to modifying these old shoppers, some properly cool stuff on there. May provide a bit of information to melle too

So, as this is a car forum and i'm doing a narrowboat, I thought i'd do some (bad) drawings to get us all on the same page when it comes to narrowboat jargon. Most of these terms are specific to narrowboats and therefore a bit niche Basically narrowboats are just big steel tubes made of flat steel plate. Fairly standard thicknesses would be 10mm for the baseplate, 6mm for the hull sides and 4mm for the cabin sides and top. They don't need to be this thick, but they're a nightmare to sell on if they differ. They can't be any wider than 6ft10, or any longer than 72ft Next update i'll actually show some progress, honest...

Love barges, must be a fantastic, sedate holiday on one, (As an aside, I used to deliver to a barge building company between Nantwich and Chester, went one day to find Police cars everywhere, turned out they'd had a 60ft stolen the previous night, I mistakenly said it should be easy to get back and the owner stated probably not as it'd either be a 20ft and a 40ft or 2 x 30ft within a few days, he must have been right as it was never recovered,) Looking forward to seeing future updates on this thread, Nigel

Thanks for the comments folks, much appreciated. Really wasn't sure how well this would go down! I bought the boat as an empty, bare shell. The logic behind this was that even if I bought a boat that was complete but needed hull welding, i'd end up pulling the interior out to get access to do it, and probably wouldn't put much of a tired interior back in, so why pay for any in the first place? This did however mean the boat was engineless. I really fancied a proper slow revving "traditional" diesel, a National or a Dorman or something else niche like that, however a friend of mine had a (common as muck) Lister SR3 in his shed, with basically an entire rebuild kit with it, for not a lot of cash. He also planted the seed of a devious idea as to how to make it more interesting, as a clue I've been looking at oil circulator pumps... It rocked up on a pallet and was shuffled into the back of my parent's garage. It'll be a job over winter to rebuild it, narrowboating is meant to be enjoyable, so boat building may as well be enjoyable, and welding steel together in the snow isn't, but putting an engine together next to a heater with a mug of tea is. At the same time another key piece of the puzzle turned up, a big oil cooled Oxford welder. Apparently these are the thing to have when welding up a boat, and handily there was one in the village for sale for £40... They contain particularly nasty oil full of PCBs so opening them up isn't recommended, but it was missing a few bolts and the wiring was atrocious so it looked like it had been "got at", and I suspected there may have been water in the oil. Turns out everything was fine internally, and I even had the right size of Whitworth bolt to replace the missing ones.
