You've probably seen it in the classifieds as I have been bumping it for eternity with no sign of a sale really. I know it's quite niche and needs a few bits and bobs. I bought it to sell and paid too much for it, you win some you lose some.
It doesn't have an interior, (track spec yo!) all the tyres are perished and it ran poorly. Screw it, it's quite cool for a Volkswagen, DeLorean-esque looks, supercharged motor, pretty rare.
The plan was to give it a quick once over, clean it, diagnose issues, then make a call to MOT it or not depending on how it would fare.
Pulled it from it's resting place for the last 3 years which sadly was just in a parking space outside, not under cover or anything. Got it down the workshop to contemplate what the hell I had just bought.
Battery dead, old stinking fuel, damp from condensation, covered in general detritus, a leaky sunroof and full of random spares. Ok, lets get all this stuff out and stick a battery on it. Eventually it fired, running like a bag of eggs.
First job, I have to clean it. I can't stand mucky cars.
Actually doesn't look half bad!
Then get it on the ramp for inspection, I was expecting rust, it's 90's metal after all and had been sat for years.
Crikey! It's actually properly rust-free! Like, not a scab anywhere! Testament to German build quality there I suppose.
Check al the suspension, see what's what there.
Those coilovers look hardly used! I suspect they were fitted and not really driven on, bonus!
Aftermarket Eibach ARB kit front and rear, nice!
Unused EBC Redstuff pads I believe...
Fancy stainless system, I think it's Powerflow but I can't remember. Needed adjusting as was blowing slightly but a quick fix there.
Aside from the rough running, there are also some electrical issues, The window s don't go up and down and the indicators don't work. A quick look and it appears someone had been at the fusebox, perhaps to try and sort the problems, they had failed. Ok, we'll get to that later. First, I gotta polish this thing, see what it comes up like. Crack out the MOP!
It shines! Awesome! There are a few areas that have been grazed but came up much better after a couple of passes with some different compounds and polishing pads.
I wonder if the spoiler works? It'll never work, they always break, not in a million years will it work.
It works! The plastic gears are prone to wear but it seems ok! (on the button at least, haven't driven it fast enough to engage the Active Aero).
And that was sort of that, it wouldn't pass MOT with the way that it was running, so let's get it up for sale as a project, someone will want it! Wrong haha!
Weeks pass, I don't have the motivation to work on it over Christmas as the weather is cack and really, I don't like VW's, there's nothing wrong with them, they're just not my thing. The car get's transported home and there it sits, under cover and me miserable about it.
I get a new daily which needs some work, order some parts, get sent the wrong parts, be miserable again.
Yesterday I decided that I have to sort something as having nothing that works is starting to get me down. Half day off work, waiting for the DPD man to arrive with my daily parts. The weather is nice (for once!) let's have a look at this VW then.
Easy things first, swap out the blue coolant temp sensor. No change. Balls.
Check the plugs and HT leads, they're probably originals.
Ok, they're black as night but I already knew they would be...
They were all like this. Clean em up, see if it makes any difference. Nope. BALLS!
I have a spare ECU, for all I know the one on the car could be fried. Nope. FURTHER BALLS!
Did a bit of reading and happened across the "1 Metre Hose". This runs from the throttle body to the ECU and feeds the MAP sensor. I'll give that a check, seems to be there but does look a little sorry. Hmm. Let's trace this guy and just make sure it's not split in half or anything. It isn't. What it is, IS NOT CONNECTED! WHY!? Why would someone do this!?
There's a nipple on the back of the throttle body which has been capped with the above bit of tube and a masonry screw. It's a pain to get to in situ, it's under the scuttle and is in prime knuckle-scraping territory. Whoever did this must have really made an effort as it was not easy to get off, so getting it on must have been a foxxing pain in the ring.
After asking on the FB groups, no one seems to be able to tell me why this would be blanked. The car simply won't run correctly without it connected.
Stick the hose on and BOOM! Runs almost like a dream! Revs up clean, charger boosts waaaay happier! I need to do the ECU reset which I am advised, is simply revving the car north of 3k three times, but I might wait until I can get the car up to temp before doing that.
It got dark, it was cold. The above picture is for whoever decided to blank that hose. And also for me for not checking things over until now.
So, plans have sort of reverted to original, get it into a better state, maybe sell it once the weather is better.
Have ordered some silicon hose to replace the worn ones, have also a fuse box on the way as apparently these old VW boxes are known for melting themselves. 20min job, swap it out, see what's what. Get some tyres on and see if it will MOT ok.
I also have some interior bits which I have got a hold of, (door cards, dash plastics etc) to make it nicer inside. I may put a carpet in it too if I can find one, failing that, maybe some 4x stretch stuff.
