Is there a problem with how the "new" icon works? I'm finding that, quite often, I'll click on it to see any posts since I last looked and it will take me to the first post in the thread.
For example the "Spotted" thread in "Retro Car Chat" - I last looked at the end of that thread yesterday, but I've gone to it this morning and clicked "new", and it's taken me to the very first post. It's done this a number of times over the last couple of weeks, and not just on that thread.

oh yes, same for me too - when I click on a thread heading from the "Recent Threads" list it takes me to page 1 for every one.

^ I expect that from clicking on the heading, but I'm specifically clicking on the little "new" to the left. I've just had it again in the spotted thread - when I posted above I'd visited the last page of the spotted thread and it taking me to the first, and it's already forgotten that I've been there today.

This is still annoying me, even though there's nothing to suggest it should have improved. Just been into the "Let's see the abandoned ones" thread, which I was last looking at earlier this morning, and the "new" icon starts me at the first page.

And it's still doing it. I went in to "Let's See the abandoned ones" yesterday, and clicking on the "new" icon took me to the first page. So I manually went to the last page and scrolled to the end. Did the same again today* and it's the same, still have to manually go to the end.
(* Yes, I know a definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting different results, but in this case I was hoping that yesterday it might have forgotten the last view because of how long it's been since I went into that thread - even though it isn't long - but when I tried today, it was only yesterday when I'd last visited. So it doesn't look as if it's just getting to a point where it gives up because it's been so long since the last visit.)

I get this a lot with my email notices of updated threads - always goes to page 1.

It looks to be using the correct link in the layout to take you to the right place, but then it doesn't. I'm hoping to spend some time this Friday on some forum layout stuff (I managed to make a cleaner version of the mobile site last week, just want to test it some more and then can encourage people to use that ). So I'll have another look then.

It's been doing that for ages for me, but only if it'd been a while since looking at the thread. I'd assumed it was something like the system only has a certain amount of memory for where each individual person was on the threads they've looked at, so it remembers the last 50 or whatever, but each new thread knocks the oldest on off the list.

I'd have no issue if it was only doing it in threads that I've not been in for ages - most sites forget after a while. But for me this is stuff I know I've been in recently. Even though it's only a single page with a small number of posts, clicking the "new" icon on this very thread has just opened it on the first post, even though I was here this morning. Sounds as if it's playing up, though, as HoTWire is able to duplicate a problem.

This is still happening - I was in the "spotted" thread this morning, and yet it goes back to the first page when I click on the new icon just now.

This is still really frustrating - I actually posted in a thread last night, I didn't just view it, but this morning I click on "new" and it's taking me to the first page. It's frustrating because a lot of these are long-running threads that are picture heavy, then people quote a picture-heavy post, so it takes ages to get to the bottom if I just click on the last page number and go directly to it.

This is really getting on my nerves now. I was in the spotted thread only this morning, but the "new" icon has already forgotten and starts me on page 1. Is there any chance it could be mended please?

It does for me, sometimes. I just clicked "new" on the spotted thread and it's taken me to the first new post. But it won't be long before it starts me at the beginning, and not just on that thread. I haven't seen a pattern to it, so far.

I see this from time to time, but I think I've pinned it down to clicking on the yellow part of the "new" button, which takes me to the first post, versus clicking on the actual text of the button itself, which usually takes me to the latest unread post. Unless there are lots of pictures and the scrollto happens before they load, which will throw it off until the thread rolls to the next page, but that's not a forum problem.

Do you mean the text within the icon or the thread title ? If so I can get the result as you by clicking the text within the icon (takes me to the last page) the yellow part of the icon takes me to the first post, same as clicking on the thread title.

The text within the icon. We're seeing the same behavior.

And back to the first page of "spotted" this morning. To clarify, I'm clicking the little yellow "new" icon to the left of the thread title. Now I've been into the spotted thread, that's disappeared because there aren't any new posts. Working just fine on the "abandoned" thread, but if I'd clicked that first, maybe that would have gone to the wrong place (what I mean there is that I'm not saying it's this particular thread). I haven't tried the distinction between clicking on the text of the icon vs. clicking on the yellow background, I'll have a go at that and see if that works the same for me. Not sure my aim is that good.

Tapping new will take you to the last viewed post + one, tapping the title opens the thread as a fresh start on page one, I often end up accidentally tapping the title now βnewβ on my phone. Big clumsy fingers. π
