That ought to help it out. Do any of the racers do wild porting jobs on these? Would a road car benefit? Yes they do. With rectangular siamesed intake ports (which are actually quite large for the engine) you can improve the breathing, but the flow area in the head limits high RPM performance. For a road car, skimming the head to get somewhere between 7:1 and 8:1 and making sure the rest of the engine is adjusted well will mean the better grade fuel available today can be utilized with a bit more spark advance. Simply cleaning it out and tuning it up will make a noticable difference though. Phil

Ask Jonny69 on here how far you can take them - his Pop did something near 80mph (iirc) before he blew it up, lol!

The ports are not great from the factory - there is definitely room for improvement but at this stage I am just trying to get it working as well as I can in standard form. If and when I do an engine build it would make sense to investigate further. The tappets were set to .004 inlet and .006 exhaust before the manifold was refitted with a new gasket and fasteners. How the engine bay looked when I picked the car up Everything was double checked and the engine spun over. After a few turns she fired into life and idled happily. Compression is definitely better - hand cranking is noticeably harder! Timing and fuel still seemed right so I took the car out for an hours drive and saw a friend in Chichester. The engine is smoother and a lot more powerful than before. Hills that were 3rd gear are now 4th gear and accelerating. Funnily enough the engine is smoother and quieter too! It is still a bit on the load side which I think can be attributed to a leak in the slip joint of the new exhaust - to be investigated later, and the aforementioned gearbox. For now though I just want to drive it! blackpopracing - 80kph is enough! Thanks for looking James

Great results. I really enjoy seeing stuff like this getting used. 👍

Indeed nice.
You'll notice an improvement in torque if you seal the exhaust up.
Glad you have found an improvement though!

Just read the whole thread in one go, very interesting! I've been watching a YouTube channel called Oak Swamp, he's building an Austin 10 based special and it's a great series. He's gone big-block with a Reliant engine though!
