	Towards the end of the first lockdown in 2020, like a lot of people, we found ourselves walking and exploring areas closer to home. In the bottom corner of the garden we share with a number of other properties are some derelict pig stys, we decided to have a closer look. Until that point we had thought there was nothing beyond them but a hedge row and fields. It was a bit like discovering the door to a secret garden. The hedge row turned out to be a hollow way/drovers track running approx 100m down the hill to a brook. A route down into the sunken lane lead us into a picturesque little ravine with a small stream running through it. It obviously hadn’t been used by anyone for a long time, when it had been, some areas had been used as a dumping ground. We found a few interesting little art deco medicine bottles, a sheep skeleton and some broken pottery. Nothing of any value but interesting for the children to look at. I have my own workshop where I restore vehicles for work and as my hobby. Every time we go for a walk in the countryside I day dream of finding the rusty remains of a pre-war vehicle abandoned somewhere. Halfway down the hollow way, sticking out of the ground, we found the rear axle of a vehicle. To say I was excited would be an understatement. I knew enough on first sight to see it was pre-war.

	I read the title to the tune of "what's that coming over the hill, is it a monster" song. Was that your intentions or just my mind? It must have felt a real adventure unearthing that area of land for the first time in decades!

	i know of few bits like this locally that i haven’t returned to in years one has wooden wheels or did when i last looked .. what would that put it at 1910-1920ish? the other was a engine block and beam axle sticking out of the ground another was apparently an old tractor shed my dad remembers when he was a kid (now 80) that is long gone the woods around it have all grown around it and some old bits and bobs hidden in the undergrowth

	Thanks for your interest! I decided it would be worth asking Graham, the farmer who manages the land, if he knew anything about it. Graham grew up very locally and remembers seeing the vehicle there approximately 65 to 70 years ago when he was a child, he’s not 100% sure but he thinks it might have been a small van. He said it would be OK to dig up what was there. We spent numerous half an hour stints over the next year with a spade and pick axe seeing what could be found. The first complete part we dug up was the engine, however I couldn’t find a photographic match for it online when using assorted search criteria around small vintage vehicle engines. The rear axle also looked quite unique but I couldn’t find any matches for that either. I was pretty confident it was 1920’s but couldn’t find any identifying marks.

It was exciting to find and is also seems to be taking me on an interesting journey at the moment.

	Somethings ringing a bell with that axle that it's a early Austin, pre war but probably a bit newer than 1920s

	Fascinating stuff 👍 will bookmark and see what it turns out to be! I remember finding the remains of a Series 1 Land Rover 80" in the Peak District many years ago. I keep meaning to head back and see if it is still there!

Looking back through my photos and video's I found this. Admittedly it's more "What's that coming through the bush? Is it a monster?" But it seems to fit the theme so far. By the end of March 2021 I had managed to free all the major components that I believe were buried. Graham had offered to use the telehandler to help me lift the heavy bits out of the gully, a date was set for Easter Monday. The whole lifting process took less than an hour. Once we had retrieved it Graham kindly jet washed the assorted parts, and I piled them into the workshop to look at more closely another day. Off I went home to spend the bank holiday with the family…… for about half an hour, which I spent pacing round the kitchen, then I found a spurious reason to nip back to the workshop and started taking things apart. More on that next time.

	I'm going to guess, Alldays and Onions. Only because when I used to to read Autocar whenever there was an unidentified chassis it always turned out to be an Alldays and Onions.

	Cool find, looking forward to finding out what it is. Back in the 90s when Brooklands was still partly abandoned, we went exploring when we were there at a Wheels Day. We found a partially buried beam-axled chassis sticking out the ground at the top of one of the curves. I always wondered what that was and if anyone else knew it was there. I guess it would have been somewhere at the top of the curve section at Mercedes Benz World which is now inaccessible.
