Hi all, Long time lurker, infrequent poster. I thought I would start a build thread for my 2004 Yaris T-sport, as I've begun documenting the build via the medium of youtube- perhaps I will finally finish a car/post regular updates in an internet build thread. First thing to address though is why on earth I own a Yaris. Long story short I was helping a mate looking for an affordable hot hatch (he has since purchased a mk.5 golf gti-fantastic choice) and after a great deal of looking about the logical solution to my own none existent problem in this scenario was to buy myself another completely unnecessary car. Enter the Yaris (£998.65 after the change in the centre console) "A Bargain!" I hear no one cry. Perhaps, but after a surprisingly expensive near side lower arm change and an ebay gearbox.. not a bargain to be seen. Oh, it has also just hit run in milage at 150k.. It looked at this point a little something like it does in this heavily backlit photo: Anyway, having got that out of the way, the car was running very nicely. Nippy, small, reliable, great! Obviously the solution now was to begin mucking about with it in a bid to relive my 17 year old selfs hatch modding dreams. Illogical first step was to "fit" an mx5 front ARB to the rear of the car. I made a video of this, it's far from my best even having re-edited it so I've included it at the end. I had to cut off the ends and weld on tabs to make it fit: looked a little like this after: Then came the bracketry for the drop links: And the bracketry for the ARB mounts: And.. it actually fits!: Having done this off the back of a Whiteline advert on instagram I moved to more traditional realms and put some lowering springs, new dampers and wheels on it; again there is a video of this at the end, far better than the first but still not my best work to date- the sound at the end is a bit off and I do my best to deafen my (limited) viewership. That left it looking smarter: As previously mentioned this decent/regression to being 17 could only go one way from here BWAAAAAAAP. So an exhaust- seems off the shelf options are limited, thats not really any "fun anyway is it?" So I did what anyone would do, the next logical step.. I made my own on the driveway. This video is (In my opinion) the best to date and as such can be viewed here: My second video here: And the first here: All feedback welcomed across the board, let me know what you think to the cars, the content or my rambling. Thanks, Tom

Welcome.
Amazing that is a 17 year old car and probably older in design.
Neat welding there on the supports.
I hope this thing goes off the charts, as they are mostly disposable, along with the other variants, C1 and 107
Locally in Medway there is one with anodised wheels and a few bits, including iirc some stickers which are wrong in this case.
Wheels on your look neat too.
PS. Goood movie making. Wish I could do that sort of thing for the S10 but I suspect it does take hours to edit and find the right bits jto put together, I remember how much time a 2 minute stop motion with 600 photos took to make.
And 10/10 for having a garage assistant, and acknowledging it.

I never understood why the T sport didnt take off. Granted, the other hot hatches ran rings around it, but it is still a damn cheap and nippy wee car, and it doesnt look half bad.
Looking forward to this series progressing. I wish my first videos were half as good as these... Subscribed!

Its odd, as I could easily drive around in a classic mini with half the horsepower and one less gear and not worry about it, but somehow if its more modern I need more powah! These also have good, stealthy speaker positions, to indulge my other hobby! Plus, I could have a five door for the dog!!! 2zz T-Sport, anyone?

First and foremost thanks all for the kind words, it's hugely useful to get positive feedback, friends and family watching videos always feels like a somewhat bias feedback source. Welcome. Amazing that is a 17 year old car and probably older in design. Neat welding there on the supports. And 10/10 for having a garage assistant, and acknowledging it. I am an avid viewer of Youtube myself and like a lot of people always thought it looked like a fair bit of work.. Having had a go its a huge workload, especially trying to complete a video a week while maintaining the illusion of a full time job and something that resembles a social life- this again is when some positive feedback really is nice. Thanks for the kind words re. the welding- still very much learning but getting better with each project! Always gets a look over from the garage assistants to ensure structural integrity before being put into use! I never understood why the T sport didnt take off. Granted, the other hot hatches ran rings around it, but it is still a damn cheap and nippy wee car, and it doesnt look half bad. Looking forward to this series progressing. I wish my first videos were half as good as these... Subscribed! Nippy it is, it feels more so in standard guise with some body roll to give that illusion of speed. As above thanks for the kinds words, and the sub- nearly double figures now! I've thought about one of these several times, I need to get over the perceived lack of power. It feels a lot quicker than I anticipated I must say, most likely due to the size I guess, that was the primary appeal to me over some more conventional hatches. As for practicality the sliding rear bench is a masterpiece, albeit one I will be removing in good time. Funny you should mention the 2ZZ, I've always got half an eye on a few breakers for a corolla t-sport to pilfer relevant parts from. Once the rest of the car is up to scratch this is a very real possibility at present, small amount of chassis rail choppage to get the 6 speed box to fit I believe- my hope is that the Yaris shafts will mate to the corolla box though..

Having had a go its a huge workload, especially trying to complete a video a week while maintaining the illusion of a full time job and something that resembles a social life- this again is when some positive feedback really is nice. I've got 3 years of it under my belt, if you ever need advice I'm happy to help. Some tips I've learned the hard way: Limit to MAX one video a week. Pick a day and drop then, and then walk away. Don't look at analytics until you are 6 months into it, the data will lead you astray. Share the videos on FB, Toyota fan pages, local car groups. That's where some proper growth can happen. Do the Instagram and start a FB page if you wanna push it, but don't let it take over. Your thumbnails are great, but don't forget a black outline over coloured font makes the lettering properly pop! Set a style and run with it. Once you know how your edits should work and look, you can streamline the process considerably. My episodes are about 20min long and I can usually start to finish an edit in 2 evenings. Talk. Your car may feel like the star, but you are the content. Have a look at Alex Crosse on here. He could be restoring a BMX for all I care, its the dialogue and humour that really draw the punters. The car content is the candy.

Regarding 2zz, best get on it before the MR2 and Lotus boys get them all. Also, grab an MR2 gearbox for the LSD. I think there's a guide on MR2ROC

Great fun these, 100bhp is enough for them I've found they're a hoot to hoon.

I ended up with one of these last year almost by accident and have been dailying it since, it's really surprised me in being a lot more of a laugh than I thought it would be! They may only have 105bhp but they weigh so little yet feel like they handle well. I used to own a Corolla T Sport road/track car a couple years back and the steering and gearbox had less feel than in the Yaris but it's led me to think that Is the answer I am tempted to do some mods to mine at some point, even do a little track work in it

If the 2ZZ fits then so does the 3S-GTE

Me-waffling about liking youtube Hugely helpful and gratefully received tips Awesome, thanks so much, I'll definitely take you up on that. Just had a little browse through your channel and the production value is lovely. I'll be sure to have a look at Alex's content in a mo. Regarding 2zz, best get on it before the MR2 and Lotus boys get them all. Also, grab an MR2 gearbox for the LSD. I think there's a guide on MR2ROC I have been watching a stuffed corolla that appears to be about to go for sub £200.. At the moment however I don't really have the space for it, or the means to collect it. I quite fancied the Corolla but stumped for the Yaris due to it's size. The gearshift actually feels pretty nice in it, significantly better than most modern boxes with their soulless gates of mush. Steering is somewhat over assisted, though the geo change in the drop has improved it, and I was contemplating looping the rack lines to de-power it. If the 2ZZ fits then so does the 3S-GTE I did some googling and it appears most people are sensible enough not to invest the time engine swapping Yaris'. What I have discovered in the general consensus is it's primarily just a case of shoehorning the thing in and the previously mentioned "slight trimming" to clear the box.

Yeah the Corolla's shift was definitely mushy, you definitely wouldn't have liked the Corolla's steering then as it felt even more assisted than the Yaris' It still held its own nicely against 182's and EP3's though Considering the Yaris' weight of 950Kg vs the Corolla's 1220Kg, it would be very sprightly!

tom132 does looping pas lines decrease the assist, making the steering heavier, or disable it completely?

The car content is the candy. ^^^^^^^^ This, same with Project Binky, Tommy does a pretty good video as well I have to say I am finding the "deeper" world of Youtube a pretty interesting world at the mo. I find it incredible the difference in viewership numbers between say MCM, BOM and channels such as Alex's or Tommy's- It feels like there should have been a formal introduction here to reach first name terms, not just watching some vlogs . Now I've watched The difference in views subs etc. is huge but for myself the content is equally interesting.(I think Binky is the better example for comparison here in terms of content; MCM, I appreciate appeals to the masses as it's often more focused on off the shelf bolt on mods and is produced more like a TV show) That's interesting to read. I quite fancied the Corolla but stumped for the Yaris due to it's size. The gearshift actually feels pretty nice in it, significantly better than most modern boxes with their soulless gates of mush. I'm nothing more than an armchair expert here but.. People (seemingly mostly Civic owners) often just take the PAS belt off, but this makes the steering more weighted than a non-PAS rack as you have to not only turn the rack but also drive the PAS fluid round the system and backdrive the PAS pump. If you loop the input and output of the rack you manage to negate this, though you are still having to drive the fluid around the rack and it's slightly harder than a non-PAS rack. On cars that came with both (MX-5s being the example that comes to mind here) the advantage of depowering a rack over fitting a non PAS rack is the PAS racks are quicker. I was under the impression that a PAS rack has some play built into the column though where it meets the rack which is normally negated by the fluid being pumped. Not sure how this is impacted by just looping the lines

If anyone knows the weight of a standard yaris T sport wheel I'd be grateful. I'd like to know how much weight I manage to get out of the car.
While my hang scale arrived yesterday to do the weighing some utter flute decided to relieve me of the 4 standard wheels from my garden yesterday also.
If anyone gets offered some badly painted toyota alloys by a questionable man in a cage back transit they'll be mine..
Anyway, deadlocks and ring cameras are en route for the garage now..
