Gents,
I'm looking for some advice or points of view regarding my car. For sometime now I've been running a 4age 16v in my old classic ford without issue, but recently I've been thinking is it time to swap, or rebuild.
The car will shortly be coming off the road to have some new bodywork and paint, so this seems to be the best time to ask 'do I spend a little tuning the engine up? or spend probably the same amount dropping in a Honda K24?'.
I've been arguing both sides, but wanted to open the question to the floor.

Depends what else would be needed, they're both great engines. Are you using the Toyota gearbox or adapted to a Ford box?

Adapted to the type 9. You can also buy a bellhousing to mate up with the K24 now, which is what got me thinking...

I'd keep and tune the 4AGE personally. The type 9 would need mods to handle the extra shove of torque from the K24, and may not like the extra higher engine RPM  And I'm also a fan of older tech engines in old Fords anyway  |

What about a ST170 engine? Full RWD ready swap on ebay for £1100
Or a 3S-GE? those arent very expensive to start with, can be mated to a IS200 6 speed (those were cheap last time I looked), if you use the beams bellhousing. Quick look found a Altezza RS200 6spd manual gearbox for £500, which mates straight to the 3S-GE. I think the later one's had 170/190ish BHP
Could also go for the 3S-GTE (Mr2 Trubo) engine if you wanted boost

Problem with 4age is that it is an old engine and it's becoming rare and more expensive lately. I've seen prices for them go through the roof lately.
That said, I'm still going forwards with the 4age in my car 😁

I have an r type k20a in my kit car and love it. Especially when the second power bump comes in.
Surely a k24 must be even better!

It takes big money to get extra power out of the 4age, sometimes its easier just go for an engine thats more powerful out of the box.

Reviving an old thread because its now time to decide and push on with this project.
Parts for the 4age do seem to be getting more expensive, or more rare - is that going to get worst?
I had been looking at the Beams, or 2zz (nice little Lotus connection) ... the parts to bolt up to the J160 seems a good route instead of rebuilding the Type 9.
or do I just go the Zetec route? but with parts of plenty, that means its the normal, and I like the car to be different.

Not that I'm biased or anything  but the 4A-GE is a great engine, I love it  but as said tuning parts are getting harder/expensive to come by, same is also happening with the 3S-GE/GTE (both of which are a fair bit heavier) I think the 2ZZ (Corolla T sports are a good source) would be the one to go for, lots of MR2 guys have fitted them to MK1/3's, very similar weight/fitting and characteristics to the 4A-GE but with a great performance hike + there are supercharger/turbo options. |

I'd be looking at 2ZZ if a gearbox adapter is available to bolt it to the existing gearbox  |

I've managed to speak to a couple of companies in NZ who make an adapter for the 2zz to bolt to the j160.... So I think I've got a way ahead there.
