I can't decide whether this: attack of the clones!...is either (a) immensely sad and quite pointless or (b) actually quite a good thing.... Any thoughts?

exact replica... fitted with 1200... if it had somet serious shoved in its ass it would be ok, but not a 4 pot beekle engine. bit like those Audi TT replicas based on I think Metroid running gear..

Gotta agree with the general opinion of all show and no go being a bit pointless.
However, seeing as 911 are pretty much the car of choice for everyone living in the Chealsea/Fulham area (or at least thats how it seemed when I lived there!), what difference does the engine make if you're gonna be stuck crawling along at 2mph on the King's Road anyway?

Looks a reasonable clone....
drop something silly in there... job done.... it'd have to be a scooby (or porsche) flat 6 though really... otherwise it'd sound all wrong!

You would be better off buying one based on the MR2 Turbo or the Pontiac

I don't know why but to me these seem ok (when they're done properly):
Cobra 356 Lotus 7
but these don't:
Countach 911
Perhaps it's because some replicate a car to pose and some replicate a car to drive? If it's about posing then only the real thing can cut it, if it's about driving experience then a replica might be the only way. Being Porsche specific IMO if you want a 4 cylinder 911 then spend your money on a 912.

Agree completley rmad - though some replica's of the Lotus 7 you should never touch........(I won't name them for legal reasons - but one has the same name as a large grasshopper, and the other is a fictional character that had merry men and stole from the rich.....!) Anyother good replica to think about is the Banham Spyder (130??)

Can I ask why? OK so it might go OK. But it looks a bit like some tupperware that got accidentaly left too close to the cooker! This made me laugh.... Which people? Bet they're the ones holding funy "walking sticks" and being accompanied by a well behaved labrador...

Dutton Pheaton's are f ucking ugly as well, but I love them (shame I'm over 6 foot though )

On the subject of the porker replica, even with a big engine in the back you're still dealing with beetle underpinnings so it won't have the handling or breaking to match the speed, nor will the transmisson be great unless you bolt in proper porker transmission. So when you've fitted a new engine, upgraded the tranmission and completely rebuilt and redesigned the suspension (I've heard of somebody doing a major job fitting porker front suspension to one of these) what have you got? Something that might go like a 911 turbo, but also looks just like one and probably cost as much to build as a used 911 would to buy.
The other downside to these is the amount of genuine porker body and trim parts. These things aren't cheap, so once you've upgraded the performance you're probably looking at proper porker insurance premiums as well.
As for the Escort based thing, I just love the description. Particularly the bit about the fact that it has a mid engine meaning that it's race developed. I thought race development was a car created as the result of a racing program, not that it has the engine in the middle.

Yeah, I had to laugh about that as well. I think he meat that the engine was race developed, not where the engine is placed.........! Might be a nice project to try and get a Pinto in there though.....or maybe a Cossie lump

When I see one of those supercar replicas it makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time. No doubt the effort that has gone into making them but WHY!! In my opinion you would have to spend the best part of 15 grand to get a decent 355 replica (MR2 base). Just think what that could buy if you put your mind to it! Proper head turning material with real pedigree.
Also whats the point of having a Cortina engined Diablo parked outside a council lockup, next to a ratty Mondeo?? Cos that where they usually end up. Hardly Footballers Wives is it!

It must curse word the owners of the real thing off a bit too. Whenever I see a Porsche 356 or a Cobra I always assume it's a replica because the real things are pretty rare. These cars come in the same category as fake Burberry clothing IMO

I like that gregori thing. the styling is cool and it looks very nicely made, unlike lots of kit sh1t. Are those re-skinned Mk3 escort doors? The Porsche rep is a freakin disgrace. The bloody wheels are not even in the middles of the wheelarches. and 1200cc? [glow=red,2,300]CRUSH IT![/glow] As for those re-skinned MR2 ferarri reps; cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18290&item=4506654655&rd=1If you are prepared to pay 16 large for one of them you are ONE SAD FUTHA MUCKA. Ok parked outside a mock-tudor house in essex i suppose.
