I am considering buying a car that was sold new in Japan in 1997. It was then imported to the UK sometime between 2012 and 2016. It was given UK plates in 2018 and then exported to The Czech Republic in September 2018. It has very very low mileage which has been confirmed since 2016, but I would like to do some investigation to the mileage from its time in Japan. I have tried to reach out to the owners club in a Japan, but understand that they are very private regarding information so have had no response.
Does anyone know if checking vehicle history in Japan is possible based on chassis number?

Unless you get the full details from the importer you've got no chance. The main issue with J imports is somehow the mileage disappears overboard on the way here.

This came up on one of the recent Juicebox vids, hes done quite a bit of research into his AE86's history in Japan, he wasn't really looking for detailed mileage history but might still be relevant? And the site linked from that video which helped find the info japancarhistorycheck.com/

The only way I know is if a BIMTA check is taken out at time of import purchase from Japan, for which you'd get a BIMTA certificate with the car.
They check mileage is accurate and that it's not been recorded as stolen in Japan.
I don't think you can do one retrospectively though and the bimta website seems to be down unless the one google brings up wasn't the official bimta website to start with.

From one importer from many moons ago, they’d literally go around all of the imported cars and gather the histories and burn them, prior to rolling the clocks back. There were some decent cars there but not as many as you’d think.

Update; I have received a copy of the export certificate. Anyone know where to get an explanation of it? There are some English on it, but not enough for me to understand what, why, where ,when

Used cars. Used car salesmen. Used cars bought sight unseen. Used cars that are 25+ years old. Used cars exported to another country. Used cars sold to people that don't speak Japanese.
That's a fairly obvious haven for skulduggery ...

Slightly related question. Does the odometer have to be operational for UK mot? Not compulsory here in New Zealand as long as the speedo works.

No it doesn't, there's no way of testing it on the MOT.

Same rules for the UK as NZ I believe. Both however are dependant on how observant the tester is.

My wof guy has been writing the same mileage on the check sheet for three years/six tests. He told me straight out the odo doesn't have to work.
