Starting a thread hoping for pointers and info in the first instance, will turn into a build thread when work gets underway!
Have a 1989 Range Rover Classic that currently has a BMW M21 diesel out of a 525 - its a slow old yoke and recently started giving engine trouble, so I want to put a petrol unit in it.
A bit of googling around has led me to conclude that my best option is a BMW M52B28 2.8 petrol most commonly found in E36 328. A South African Land Rover Defender factory version used this engine, and it is a relatively common 90/110/Defender swap, including daslandroverman on here
Gearbox in Range Rover is 5 speed manual, but I have no idea what box it is, as I have no details re the conversion to the diesel. There is a choke light on the dash so I'm assuming the original engine was a petrol, either 3.5 or 3.9.
I am not handy enough to do the work myself, and intending to ask my cousin to do it, he's got a good bit of experience swapping engines in his drift cars and a decent workspace.
Anybody on here done this before and got any pointers?!
Not too worried about space or fabricating engine mounts where required. Cousin has dealt with ECUs on these engines before. Diesel to petrol an issue. Will replace the tank, but is it enough to flush out the fuel lines with petrol, or is that asking for trouble? Definitely want to keep the 4WD, anything specifically to be aware of there? If I need a new box, what should I be looking for?
Any tips much appreciated, and if anyone can point me in the direction of somebody who has put this engine in a classic Range Rover that would be brilliant! Thanks!
