Nice first project. That'll have a TU engine, I never used a belt tension thingy on those. And did quite a few. Fit, ballpark the tension (or ask someone on here to check/help) and you will be fine.
edit: I guess Haynes says this: Yup, that'll do.

I’ve got some 50mm lowering springs for this if you ever fancy tapping it with the lowering stick 😉 I’ve got 3 205’s myself, 2 GTI’s with GTI6 engines and an XS with a c2 VTS engine just no time to work on them so they are all off the road waiting for me to get my finger out!!

Sunroof leak will either be the fibre sealing washers on the handle where it bolts to the glass, dodgy vacuume seal or blocked/rotten drain tubes. Did you get the flat faced wheel bolts to go with the pepper pots? You can’t use the bolts from your steel wheels with them!

curse word, so the top mount has come out of the bit it sits in?

I would be tempted to lift it from either the exhaust manifold or inlet manifold close to the head and then fenagle it into the right place. Would be easier with a friend to help.
Don't be put off, I've been in similar situations and sometimes its better to walk away for a bit and come back to it, rather than push through and destroy any mojo/motivation that you have.

I feel a bit silly - I took the bracket off, lowered the engine, put bracket back on and lined it up in about 5 minutes. Doh. Glad I spent 200 quid on an engine hoist I didn't need...
I now have the timing belt on. I had the belt tight and turned the engine over by hand but it just didn't want to turn. I figured it was too tight so loosened off the nut on the tensioner pulley and loosened off the belt. I now can't get it to tighten. Ugh.

Yeah always try turning it from the crank not the cam.

So you may have seen my thread on the technical forum. I have a few problems. 1) Turning the engine by the cam loosened the belt and caused it to possibly jump a few teeth. I turned it round without any valve to piston contact and locked the cam. However the crank is out of time and I can't get it locked. So need to try and get it locked. 2) Belt came off and it was fouled with oil. There is quite a lot of oil going on, including around the crank pulley. I'm going to attack it with a lot of degreaser and try and get it clean, then assess whether I need to try and sort the oil leak or not. It seems it is a leak from the high pressure cam feeder through the head gasket, which is apparently common. I don't have any confidence in my mechanical ability to do a head gasket change ... 3) I got a new boot lock (remember the broken one?) and two problems - one, it appears to be missing a piece that holds the two bits of the lock together (I tried to get the one off my old lock, and it broke) and two, I can't find the connecting rod to get it working. Doh. Maybe I am not cut out to be a mechanic ... My various other parts are arriving but nothing is getting fitted until I get the engine running... Don't be disheartened, we all get into a bit of bother now and then. You're going to get things wrong sometimes. Have you taken spark plugs out? Leaving them in would make it a lot harder to get the timing locked and it might be something you've missed. The timing holes can be a little fiddly to find, have patience

Have you stuck the alloys on yet? Sometimes its worth doing something completely unnecessary like that to keep your mojo up.

So, great news - my engine is back in time! It turns out with the radiator out I could turn the crankshaft whilst pushing the bolt through the flywheel hole. The bolt is now snugly through the flywheel and the crank is locked. Woohoo! Spent a bit of time degreasing with Gunk and water but suspect I might need something stronger. The manifold is looking pretty rusty and I did think "hey maybe I'll replace it whilst I am in here" but if I take that approach I'll replace everything and I am not sure that's a sensible way of spending my money ... Get it running and driving for a bit then decide what you want to spend money on. In my opinion some things are no brainers like wheels and lowering, but other things might only become apparent later. As for the heat shroud for the exhaust manifold, are you on Facebook? Try some of the 205 pages on there or on eBay. I don't imagine you'll find new, so it'll be a case of looking for a better 2nd hand one.

Having a 205 and a 309 I have had experience of leaking sunroofs. On the 309 the drain tube from the roof to the rubber drain pipe had rusted away. The rain water then runs down the headlining into the footwell. Pull the headlining out and have a look.

You will need to take the the grab handles, sun visors & anything else attched to the roof off & may also need to pop the a pillar covers off & drop the door seals. It's not to hard, just faffy & becareful as they are easy to snap! I know I have take one out before but it's 16 years ago.

Unfortunately those are not the right wheel bolts. The newer cars have a different bore through the wheels, I know because I bought a set like this and they’ve been gathering dust in my workshop ever since!!

curse word, sorry about that! Didn't know they had changed them. If you are quick you should be able to cancel it.

I've seen some manifold shields on eBay fairly cheap (i.e. under £15) in fairly variable condition. You might still get lucky at a breakers yard ...
