This should have been a reader rides. On reflection you are right but it started as an "any interest in this" thread and kinda spiraled out of control as is the case sometimes I did mention at the start I rarely sell cars - I tend to have a long term relationship with a car an then when it comes to the point that the costs/borkage outweigh the value of the car I'll break it for parts This one got saved because I am idiot - I should have transferred the plate years ago but I didn't because it was at the back of my mind and time - well time passes fast doesn't it? Anyway there are some things still to do yet - stuff that I had planned to do but was back of the list priority - in fact the next job wasn't even on a list - just something that really grated on me.......

So is it actually for sale now? 😂 Almost.......... Would you sell a car with no antifreeze in the middle of winter and on a set of rims with no tyres fitted........... It's close to being for sale real close

Obv Still waiting for tyres bit the list is there to keep me focused 1. Dump the water masquerading as coolant 2. Replace the last 3 hoses that are as old as the car 3. Refresh coolant with 6L of BMW Antifreeze and deionised water 4. Replace wiper blades (ordered today from BMW) they passed but aren't great 5. Replace the brake fluid - 8 years old 6. Recharge the AC 7. Fit tyres when they arrive to refurbished rims Plus the bong issues - she really is bloody annoying Looked at the car - I have a list of jobs still to do so lets do something not on the list - cos I am idiot and well replacing the number plate bulb would have been the sensible next task......... One thing has annoyed me for year - partly because it was "self inflicted" and partly because it really annoyed me at the time and still does The sill cover has a crack in it................ If it sat nice I could live with it but it doesn't - it looks like an ugly overlapping crack where the two surfaces just don't want to meet ever again Now ages ago I bought one of those plastic welding things that sinks a bit of metal into the plastic because I had intended to fix it So first thing was to find it - that task went well Then strip the sill cover off - and realise that you would need some new clips to fit it back Luckily I have some of the right clips from previous sill removal in my spares box. Annoyingly I clearly used all one one type and have no spare left!!! (I have a Opel/Vauxhall history - sill covers are designed to hide the fizzing metal underneath from view - only when you remove them (or they fall off) do you realise then is no metal left to re-attach them to) - whenever I get a new car a very early task on the list is to buy all required sill cover clips - remove them check that metal is still present - remove years of dirt and refit With the sill cover removed - and I was amazed there was metal behind them - good metal - with paint still on it - really should take a picture in the daylight!!! Sorry I went somewhere else there - anyway time to try out the "never used" clever kit OK it's not perfect - you can still see it's cracked but it's not a gaping crack with two halves refusing to meet anywhere close I do however need some new clips (that I don't have) to put it back on...... I tried to re-use the originals but they really are a use once and throw away

BC - not sure if anyone has actually asked this, but how will you decide who gets the car?
Will it be based on how quick someone replies with a deposit when you post its ready or some other way, there's obviously a good few waiting in the traps for it

Will it be based on how quick someone replies with a deposit when you post its ready or some other way, there's obviously a good few waiting in the traps for it You’ll have to take this reply with the intended humour in it I could have a list of people who enquired about the car I might have marked them all out of 10 for the following categories 1. Approach style - quality of communication 2. Posting history on here 3. Reason for interest in the car 4. Order of PM arrival As a result I may have a list (in order) that I will work down when it’s ready to go The RR’r in pole position knows they are but with lockdowns and movement restrictions I’m trying not to end up being inflexible with regard to collection Mrs BC thinks it should have gone already (not helped by my old SLK going last Friday - if that got collected why not the BMW?) I have explained that there are still a few jobs I need to do and as we are in lockdown I can do them during the week I’m not going to give away a full tank of fuel or pay the DVLA for a months VED and not actually use the car All sensible reasons which have kept her calm Downside is I am not allowed to spend more money on it But that’s where the exchange rate comes into play

Continuing with the fixing Now with an MOT Mrs BC has decided that I shouldn't need to spend any more money on the car (already bought the tyres so good there) - I'm supposed to sell it now - this means from this point on I have to be far more careful the old Mrs BC currency exchange rate won't cut it....... Elimination of bongs Number plate light bulbs replaced - they were actually working but the glass on the bulbs looked like shadow chrome (stock item ;-) and were not purchased at the same time as I bought some cleaning materials from the local motorfactors - oh no not at all) Then a job not on the list (you knew there would be didn't you) The engine cover has always annoyed me it never has locked on - the little pegs that pop out and lock into the mounts had worn out or broken - one of the rubber rings was missing - another job which I'd not fixed since I had the car Luckily Will had a cover on his 540 so he donated it to the cause in exchange for beer However the covers are different but I could use the parts This was mine - you can see the missing rubber ring and the clips do look a bit iffy Remove the rubber rings then the sound insulation can come off revealing the clips that hold the pegs in the cover Remove the clip and the locking pin comes out Made a set of 4 working ones out of 8 (4 in each cover) Fitted back on the car it locked in nicely - result Next was the rocker cover bolt covers - I only had three - somewhere in the world there is a pile of these things - I have no idea where they go but they have legs and walk Luckily Will had a couple of spares on his 540 so he donated them to the cause in exchange for beer I think I'm going to have to get very inventive now!!!!!

The car phone saga............. Part one "A lunatics attempt at getting 90's tech in a 22 year old car to work (Motorola 8700)" So as per earlier post The 1st owner spent winters in Spain and the phone was probably left in the car in higher heats than the UK would experience - the case was very brittle - the flip front had been broken and the screen display was hardly readable when ever you needed to add a code to top it up using a code entered on the key pad and eventually I couldn't top it up at all I found a second hand one with BMW logo (which meant it had the right firmware inside it) on that well known auction site and got it for a reasonable price Good news with in a few minutes it's accepting charge and has a readable display I then needed to find a credit card sim in "Std Format" (credit card sized but not with a not a nano or micro sim but a full size std one) Vodaphone worked before so went looking for one of those and found one Put the sim inside the phone (semi inserted here to show how it slides in) Bingo - connects to Vodafone - then says "unregistered SIM" If I try to register the phone Call "17298" Or if I try to find out the phone number to register it press *#100# it tells me "Emergency calls only" So I contact Vodafone Customer Support - Should be easy right

Happy to be proven wrong, but vaguely remember on my old E38 that it would not accept a Vodaphone sim, think it would only use an 02 sim. This has been from a few years ago, so off to do a bit of internet research. (am at work, but this is more important ) Also as mentioned in a previous post. I had to slot mine in a boot unit, rather than in the phone itself. It had both, but only worked when inserted into the rear...

Happy to be proven wrong, but vaguely remember on my old E38 that it would not accept a Vodaphone sim, think it would only use an 02 sim. This has been from a few years ago, so off to do a bit of internet research. (am at work, but this is more important ) I've always run Voda in this car - appreciate it's actually a different phone to the original (I could try that one but the display screen is utterly fugged) but it hooks up fine to the Voda network so all looks good at that point Also as mentioned in a previous post. I had to slot mine in a boot unit, rather than in the phone itself. It had both, but only worked when inserted into the rear... There is no slot in the boot for a Sim card - I ripped the boot apart trying to find one when I got the car to then get some advice that the sim goes in the phone as whilst it is a "Car Phone" it can be removed from the car and used away from it (the boot unit is just to allow the phone to be controlled from the steering wheel and console) This is a little different to the earlier cars where the brick of a phone could not be removed

So conversation so far over 4 days with "Vodafone Help Desk" - VHD Tuesday VHD – Welcome to Vodafone – pick the most relevant option below as to why you are getting in touch BC – Hi I have an unregistered sim card how can I register it please Wednesday VHD – Hey! Please see this usefull page covering all possible scenarios when activating a SIM card – “Link” I hope this helps and please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. Raz BC – Hi Raz – It doesn’t cover my situation – It’s a new old stock SIM – I put it in a phone that is unlocked to Vodafone – It connects to the network and then displays “unregistered SIM” I try to find out the mobile number using *#100# so I can put some credit on it and it says “Emergency calls only” VHD - Thank you for explaining this. May I ask where was the phone purchased from please? Davo BC – Phone was purchase with an £80,000 BMW in 1999 – the SIM card was purchased from a well known auction site as I cannot use a modern SIM card in this phone VHD – Thank you. Did you check with the seller of this phone that the phone was unlocked from any other network allowing the phone to be compatible with one of our SIM cards. Davo BC – The phone is compatible with Vodafone – it was on the Vodafone network when it was supplied new from BMW in the UK BC – It’s not a phone issue – the SIM works in the phone – it picks up the Vodafone network shows a signal but then the screen says “Unregistered SIM” – I can’t do *#100# to find the number of the phone because it says “emergency calls only” So I can’t add credit to the phone – I’m stuck in a loop VHD – is there any way you could send us a photo of both sides of the SIM card? Just so we can get a better look at it and hopefully can get a better idea of how we can move forward with this for you. Daniel BC – Sure BC – I hope this helps Thursday BC - ? VHD – Thanks for the above pictures Brian! We work on a queue based system managing multiple queries over various social media platforms and we are not an instant messenger service, there can be a delay in response. I apologise for the delay. VHD – Any SIM we send out now are Triple Format SIM Cards which means there are three different sizes available on 1 SIM. You simply need to pop out the size that you require for your device. VHD - Please check the packaging on the above SIM and ensure it is still valid Brian. Also the packaging should have the mobile number printed on it. We stopped issuing these Standard Size SIM cards a long time ago. VHD - You can simply follow this link and order yourself a new SIM from our website “Link” Mukith. BC – Hi Mukith – OK my issue is that the phone only takes a std size sim card (complete as a credit card without the SIM removed from the credit card sized holder) – It’s pointless me ordering a new SIM because the SIM reader inside the phone will not read the contacts on a much smaller SIM footprint – it needs the larger STD sized chip footprint BC – is there any way of “activating” this old style SIM at all – do the numbers on the back of the card mean anything at all? Friday VHD – Can you try the SIM in a different device and let me know if you get the same issue? Maarriyah BC – Not really – I have one phone that takes a full sized SIM card like this one – if I break the SIM out of the card to fit in another device it’s then useless for this phine which needs the SIM card to stay within the credit card mount – then I’m back to finding another new old stock Std credit card sized SIM card which has not had the SIM broken out of it as most are. VHD – Can you confirm the email address that you used to register the SIM so I can locate your account and have a look to check the status of the SIM? I will just check to make sure it is active and ready to use BC – How would I do that? VHD – I have just checked with my manager to see what we can do to solve your issues and can confirm that Vodafone no longer provides service for car phones so this will be why the SIM won’t work for you. Whether the SIM is or isn;’t registered it won’t work in a car phone – however it will work in a regular mobile phone if it is registered. Maariyah BC - It is a regular mobile – it’s just connected to a car when I’m driving BC – I cannot believe that this issue could be so difficult to resolve – I am astounded Lets see what the rest of the day brings!!!

Would something like this work? Thanks Andy but unfortunately not - that (or one similar is what I tried first) - the chip footprint is much smaller on the modern SIM cards and when inserted into the phone it doesn't recognise it as a SIM card - it just says "No SIM"

Not sure how helpful it is but only idea I have, if you have another phone that will fit in, is to carefully cut the sim card out, leaving the sprues in tact, register it and get it working in the other phone, and then tape it back into the credit card mount. That's if electrical tape wrapped around it doesn't make the card too thick to slot back in. Either way I think a non working but cosmetically in tact car phone is retro-tech-tastic enough for the new owner.
