So as it turns out that Golf fuel cooler is pretty much perfect, so thanks!
Did need to trim the inlet and outlet so the both pointed forwards though:
That points forwards to some holes through the jacking point (both of which were already there, and it's still plenty strong enough where you actually put the jack).
These then loop round and splice into the existing return lines. They'll be exposed to a fair bit of grit kicked up by the wheel here, hence the transition into braided hose.
Next up was mocking up the packaging for the new external fuel pump (using the one that came with the 330d). There's just about enough space to tuck everything in the space the Jag filter used to live in (which is pretty generous really). Started with a wooden mockup:
I've tried to keep it so the serviceable things like the fuel filter can be detached without disturbing any of the rest of it. Hopefully future me appreciates the consideration!
Lastly I've made the bracket out of steel after testing everything fits in situ.
Swaged some holes in it to stop any water collecting on top of it, make it a bit lighter, and just make it look pretty TBH that's off at the zinc platers now as it'll be living in a pretty harsh environment under the car, but when I get it back I'll show it all in situ
