We have the same taste in cars, love them all! You certainly command my respect for saving the s124 from certain death- twice over with both the accident and rust damage. Even I would likely have thrown the towel and parted it despite how much it pains me to see one getting scrapped. As far as I know 10J rears were only ever fitted to widebody coupes when it comes to 124s. For touring and sedans I know of two 17" AMG 3 piece: B6 6 02 0061 (8J ET30) and B6 6 02 0062 (8.5J ET30). I read on an old forum post that they came staggered 8J front, 8.5J rear, however I doubt this is correct because the 8J wheel actually has a deeper dish than the 8.5J, being constructed with a 6.5" inner rim and a 1.5" outer, while the 8.5J is a 7.5" inner 1" outer. There's also plenty of documentation suggesting 8.5Js were installed all around after merger. www.w-124.info/w124/AMG_brochure.pdfwww.w-124.info/w124/jantesw124.jpg8Js are basically unobtainium at this point, and there's very little info about them. My theory is those are what AMG used before any distributor agreement being a closer spec to the 17" Aero 1 monoblock for w124s that existed alongside. I imagine AMG had some stock left and MB gave them a B6 PN when integrating them. Best of luck, I will follow the journey!

the 124 is actually at the painters right now - I dropped it off on Monday, so I'm gonna try & blast this up to date before I get it back early next week. I've failed at this somewhat, despite the car being at the painters a bit longer than expected (he "got a bit carried away" ) - I actually picked it up on Saturday - but I'll keep going with the old news for now.. First up, some good stuff, before I get back to the bad stuff! Front is all welded up, straight, protected & painted Side 2: Splendid Time to investigate that questionable looking wibble in the rear sill-end.. Turned out to be some sort of wire wool, filler, underseal composite. Covering this: Fuksakes I'll let the pics do the talking.. Sill end other side: Corner: Other side: Rear corners not too bad. Other side was a bit worse than this but I don't seem to have pics. (note SLS shock absorber more less on this later) Boot floor. Spare tyre looks ok Spare wheel well from above: I'm afraid this doesn't get any better... All 4 jacking points, once the beautifully sculpted filler had been cut out, looked like this: ..but fortunately I seem to have given up photographing rust at this point. More imminently.

Liked for the content, and the fact that since it’s at the painters I’m guessing there was another weldathon!

Liked for the content, and the fact that since it’s at the painters I’m guessing there was another weldathon! Correct, but first another [brief rust interlude for actually fun stuff] I made an excellent purchasement Had 1 day MoT left, and is absolutely rotten af, but it drove back fine. Because it has one of these: OM606 turbo (basically what in the S124, but with forged rods etc, and a turbo) Which now looks like this: I listed it for breaking on eBay, and have sold the front doors, front bumper (twice!), bootlid, bits of interior trim, electric mirrors, etc etc, such that it's already better than free! more chicken dinner! [/brief rust interlude for actually fun stuff]

This is progressing at speed.
Looking great, and like a success.
I have always liked the idea of rescue, rather than recycle.
I still need to get to rustproofing my S10 effectively at some point, either having it done, or getting it done.

Fair play for sticking with it, I bet a lot of folks would have let it get taken away by Hiab to get turned into bean tins!
Never fails to awaze me how much time some bodgers will take to hide rust using filler etc. - probably more time than chopping it out and doing properly.

This is progressing at speed. Looking great, and like a success. I'm giving a false sense of that by blasting through a load of historic updates to get this thread up & together. I actually bought the car in Jan of 2019, and progress was decent for a while, but then last year was more or less a write off of course. It is actually in daily use now though, so I do agree with the 'great' & 'success' parts Fair play for sticking with it, I bet a lot of folks would have let it get taken away by Hiab to get turned into bean tins! Never fails to awaze me how much time some bodgers will take to hide rust using filler etc. - probably more time than chopping it out and doing properly. Thanks Crazy isn't it! What a mega vehicle! Because i'm a total child and got too excited I found you on IG to take a look... It's bloomin awesome! Hahaha, stalkerrrrrr! thanks!

Right. Hopefully this'll be the last post regarding this car involving galloping tin worm. **lots of photos of rust being fixed** And that is quite enough of that. Time for some actually fun stuff, YAY! Ended up taking the subframe out to access the grot & check we'd got it all. This lead to realising that quite a few of the bushes were jank, and given that I'm ultimately planning pretty decent power for this old bus, now was a perfect time to sort that. So I had a box of OE-spec suspension delivered from Germany And some decidedly not OE-spec suspension delivered from Poland (this is how you make 10" wide rear wheels fit) Comparisons.. (rear toe arms and camber arms) Had the subframe & ARB blasted & powder coated by a local place. Looks to have been done well, and was very reasonable - can see us using them again. Pressed in the new subframe-to-body bushes, and diff carriers: We do actually have a hydraulic press, but this is a big heavy thing to maneuver in there, and fortunately it wasn't needed Fitted all the new arms to the fresh subframe The bottom arms here are actually from a W124 Coupe. All the wagons had SLS which I wanted to delete, and different bottom arms are part of that (SLS 'shocks' have a 2-pin bottom mounting, as opposed to the single pin a normal shock absorber would have) The state of the arms & hubs before: Hub to bottom arm bushes were among the most fekked, and needed extra violence to liberate: Popped out with a big bang! Quick clean up & coat of paint for the hubs, then re-assemble: ...and fit them back to the newly assembled subframe: New ARB bushes & brackets (only place I could find these was the main dealers, and they were pennies - weirdigans), and brake pipes/flexys/clips: Lift it back into place & bolt it up: I'm not sure what (if anything) I'm going to do with the brakes yet. At this point in the timeline I've never actually driven the car some say the standard brakes are actually very good, so I might not need to do anything much.. For now I just put them back together as they were, save for the crappy springs etc Suspension next...

Eurgh. I'm really failing at getting this thread up to date, and I'm now working on stuff that I could be sharing as I go along. I'll try my best to have a big push over the coming week, but the W124 is now MoT'd, painted, and in daily service. I drove it to York and back (I'm in Brighton) last weekend & it didn't miss a beat. Anyway, I can bring the E31 back up to date, because I promised big things.. just in time for the next MASSIVE change to make this car what I always wanted ..and now they're happening! 2 weeks ago I dropped the car off here: Which is my friend Colin @ Kustom Kolors who painted this for me (about 8 years ago *gulp*) maf260 called it Colin sent me these pics this week: I also bought this for it (after waiting nearly 6 months following my request for the DVLA to release the plate) I'll post more pics as I get them. It should be done for RRW - so so excited
