So today I took a break, doing nothing. Well, almost nothing. Guilt took over eventually, so I went to the garage and moved the chassis deeper into the carport, and moved the front end in next to it, and then the rear end to the front. Intending to start working on the bushes, removing them and refitting the new ones. Did not happen, started to look at the roll bar again. Then texted my friend Kevin on the farm, whom I knew has a 6.5 ton pipe bender……… He was busy rebuilding his guest house bathroom, but said “Come on over” so I loaded the bar into the truck and went over. 15 minutes later, the passenger side leg was bent to fit the space on the chassis where the original fitted. Remember this……. Horrible monstrosity of a roll cage. Mounting points will be used. Quick assembly and selecting the right piece. Pumping……. Started at 1440mm and 1330mm was the target. And done. I then stayed another 45 minutes while he battled a bathroom cabinet that needed to be cut and shaped around a pipe. Then headed home to come play and see if the fit was successful. Tilted back, rear diagonal mocked up. It may end up a bit more upright once the seats are fitted. Still needs to be squared up once the base plate is cut off and rewelded. Thanks to Paul Y for the roll bar. Maybe he has a pic of the car it graced before.

Coming on nicely, for the chassis colour, white or silver if you want to spot cracks of rust, black if you want to hide them!
For the wheels make sure they clear the bumpstop part of the subframe which is a major limit on wheel width, I've seen some cortinas where they cut this part off but no idea what (if anything) they then did for a bumpstop.

Mega to see this moving onwards. As you know, I have had similar desires since seeing owner-type jeeps, so it's brilliant to see progress, and by your own hand as well!

I have these if of any use, they were in my charity shop donation box They were either my dads or something we got from a charity shop when I was little as I used to spend hours looking through them (always been a bit weird lol)

I haven’t posted here before, although I read often and enjoy following your adventures and progress on your various projects. We have “met” on other forums.
Seeing you mocking up a roll bar. One thing to consider when designing a roll bar, for a car that it is going to be used when a crash helmet is not worn, is that it is much preferable to keep the roll bar far enough away from the drivers and passengers heads such that that is no possibly of heads hitting the roll bar in an otherwise relatively minor rear or side on collision. If an unprotected head strikes a roll bar in an accident it can have very serious consequences. A look at some motorsport in car crash videos will show that belts and bodies can distort much further that you expect in an accident.
Some people seem to ignore this factor, but it worries me a lot. Apologies if this is obvious to you but sometime comments are useful also to other folks.

Hey Kevin, the colour in the tin that is paid for is Black Hammerite, so thats what it needs to be really, I do have a new 750ml of Grey as well, but not sure it is the right route to go overall. I am planning on mating the suspension parts and axle/crossmember at least once before final assembly, but after all the bushes…… that should give me an opportunity to see where the bump stops are. Current;y they are completely over the FWD wheels that are fitted. I may go fit one with the adapter and spacer as planned later, just to see where it sits in relation to those bumpstops, hopefully the combination of offset and spacer etc will push it out beyond the bumpstops. It's really enjoyable watch this progress after all the planning etc. Bar looks cool. Or rather, it will! Thank you mate, I like that so far. I thought I had dodged a bullet there Paul Y when the bend worked, and obviously lengthened the leg, so that I can cut it a tad shorter before reattaching the mounting plate. Looking like good progress was had this weekend tho grizz The roll bar is an aesthetic addition for me, hopefully with some functional purpose, should I or someone else plant it upside down in a ditch. Is the book you have the same as one of those in JoeM83’s collection? I think the parts on my kit is possibly late model based on a couple of small differences noted so far. joem83 Thank you very much, Lets see what Nick says, and if that saves my sanity and fingers in the long run. misteralz I know it gets a bit messy between the two threads, but I try to keep the S10 thread as a general add on blog of all the random stuff that happens here, though overlapping happens, like in this case. Firstly, you are so right, this is a place of learning for all of us. BIG Ego’s don't seem to last here that long. I have always seen the threads I write or contribute to as a repository for knowledge. I don't want to say that Paul Y gave me the roll bar on condition that I have it padded, but we were both in agreement that it becomes a very hard thing, even just stationary it hurts if you get to head butt it. So the plan is to have it padded properly with a high density type of foam and nylon cover. I also plan to tilt it back to the same angle as the backrest, and alongside or even a touch behind it. The top will be only 100mm above the seat, but hopefully that will be enough as well. I am trusting it would be enough to do a reasonable job of protection in roll over, and not try to kill me in the event of a rear , side or front shunt. Never stop contributing, as it is often the things unintentionally overlooked that come and bite us in the butt,. .

I do not understand the technical terms highlighted in orange. "Bump" - suspension travel upwards from normal ride height - think of it as when you go over a "bump". "Droop" - suspension travel downwards form normal ride height - if you jack a car up on the chassis, it takes a bit to get the wheel off the ground as the suspension "droops". Rule of thumb seems to be 2/3 of travel (minimum of 2" ish ) is in bump, with a 1/3 of travel in droop for a road going car. My trials special will have considerably more of each

I am hoping that when it is all loaded up with engine and gearbox fitted in there, that the geometry stays good. Not a lot planned this week. I am, hoping to get paulf over, with his hydraulic press to make life easier. Here’s to hoping.

I hope it has guidance on looming crisis no1 which is the bushes that all need replacing….. Lets see if it delivers.

Set it up so the bottom arm is horizontal, check the camber looks sensible, offer up the chassis, level the chassis, plonk the body on, see where the wheel sits in the arch. Jack the bottom arm up so the wheel lifts a couple of inch and check it clears the body - reckon it will still be well clear. I think you might have to adjust the chassis, or section the body, to get the lower look you want. And then a spacer under that bump stop to limit bump travel. that should then give you a good clue as to what shock length you need to keep an eye out for. but Gaz will build you a shock for 100-ish quid - and 100 quid a corner is worth saving up for, as the controlled connection to the road will be what makes it enjoyable to use, or something you wish you'd never seen. Rear is going to be similar - offer up the axle and its arms - I'd suggest the trailing arms want to be at least horizontal, maybe a little angle down to the axle to minimise unwanted effects (rear wheel steering) if you are operating at the extremes of usual travel.

A quick pickup turned into a two hour chat. Amazing how many skilled, knowledgeable people are out there when you allow yourself to meet them. Nick seems to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of things automotive and more…. Perfect way to spend a few hours. Book he offered me should be a perfect guide in this build. I also worked on the seats and roll bar for a bit before dark. Hope to get the roll bar welded tomorrow.
