So I accidentally sold my last project, this is par for course for me really. See here - forum.retro-rides.org/thread/211567/1994-nissan-200sx-street-style?page=8&scrollTo=2623201
I picked up this little Toyota really quite cheap, the things that sold it to me were the fact that it is black and a Rev 5 (the last iteration of the Mk2 MR2). This revision comes with the big adjustable spoiler, bigger brakes, full leather and a few other subtle differences. It also has a set of pretty-much-new JR11 wheels with Rainsport/Toyo tyres. These aren't to my liking so will be going up for sale.
The plan: it has a couple of small issues that need sorting, mostly cosmetic. So these have/will be fixed, give it a damn good clean and tidy up, give it a proper service, change the wheels for something more OEM+, and maybe try and gain back a little lost power out of it via a decat and air filter but we shall see.
Picked it up on last Thursday and it was pretty grimy and definitely in need of a clean...
After a fairly decent clean, I set about sorting some paint. The front bumper appears to have suffered some damage at some point and the repair was pretty poor. Rubbed it back and the paint just fell off.
Not a perfect repair but is better than it was. Quick bit of paint and polish and it has come up quite nicely. Also the number plate pretty much fell off after I looked at it funny. New plate ordered.
The engine bay is pretty rough and I'm not sure the last time it was serviced! Managed to get the strut braces off after some hero absolutely rammed one of the bolts home and crossed the living daylights out of it. Fired a load of degreaser in the bay but ran out so will have another go. Also tempted to remove the inlet and perhaps give that a lick of silver. Need to re-black all the plastics too.
Removed the naff TRD badge, cleaned it up and gave it a lick of paint. Hung to dry in the garage.
Got some nice new crystal side lights for the front bumper through today, they should give the front end a much more up to date look and will go on tonight. Have also ordered a full Toyota service kit with all new fluids, plugs and filters which should hopefully bring back a few of the horses which have bolted over the years. Later in the week my decat pipe should turn up and maybe let the asthmatic 3SGE breathe slightly better.
The paint is overall quite good but could definitely do with some love. Hoping to get a hold of a machine polisher and see what can be done. Never used one before, so any tips are more than welcome!
Bonus back end shot:

Nice. I had a rev 4, silver body and black roof with a moonroof. Not particularly fast but good fun and nice driving position. Fitted a blueflame exhaust which sounded nice. I think some owner delete the suitcase bit of the exhaust.
Carry a pair of spare y fronts for when the back steps out in wet. I had toyo proxes on at the time.
I took a twisty motorway exit too fast I'm the rain once, slid sideways the whole way, possibly looked on purpose and quite skilful if you were following.

I've had a couple of Rev1/2 turbos a long time ago and they absolutely love/hate the rain! But yes, this is sloooooow in comparison. Still a nice place to be a drives lovely mind.
Haha Proxes are the devil! Luckily this has the new TR1 (not T1R) up front, not sure how they compare but they can't be much worse!
I've definitely been there man, they're a handful to bring back once they let go.

I always wanted a turbo or the twin turbo in black. Did the the turbo cars feel quick? They only did the single turbo, it was a twin-entry turbo. Yeah they felt pretty nippy, 220bhp or 240bhp in the later ones and plenty of tuning scope. I’d definitely have another one but the prices have shot up, same as all Japanese metal! I think they felt quicker than they were but I really enjoyed mine.

Ahh it's definitely J and rwd. And like you say much slower haha. For some reason I've never had a MR2 despite having loads of rwd crusty J stuff.
Bookmarked to see what you do with it

Bookmarked to see what you do with it Yep, both of those things! But also the engine is in the wrong place haha They’re a funny car that a lot of people seem to pass by. I bought my first one purely because it was turbo’d and bright red when I was about 20 and always had a soft spot for them. This should be just a tidy up job but we’ll see how we go!

*Sniffs* I smell a Rev 5. 😎
Alright, mate. It’s the lad with the black turbo from FB. It will be easier to follow what you do to the car, on here,
I look forward to it. As you know, there’s not many of us!

There’s a Caldina GT4 on Marketplace, for £3K. Gen 4 3S-GTE, job done.
Get it bought before MCM push the prices up. 😂

I told myself I wouldn’t spend any money on this car! Lol That's the lie we all tell ourselves when we buy a new car. "Yep, give it a clean and sort what's broken or missing and that's it".

My crystal side lights came through yesterday, so they went on in about 3 seconds flat. I think they're such a worthwhile mod, brings the front end a bit more up to date. You can really tell how wavy the bottom of the bumper and splitter are though! It turns out that the strut brace I have is a genuine TRD item and the plate was not in fact a naff eBay sticker... oh well! I gave it a rub down and a lick of paint but think I'll get it blasted and powdercoated. It looks curse word but I'll get it sorted. Today should be the arrival of my decat but judging by the weather, I'll be fitting that at a later date.

I had it all planned out, fit decat, prep car for service tomorrow, clean a bit more of the engine. Nope. So I bought this very nice looking decat (and it also appears to be very nicely made from MR2-Ben Turns out, it doesn't fit my car despite being for all NA Mk2 MR2's, I guess either a bad repair has been done on my exhaust or the first statement is not true... You'll see above, there is only one bolted flange. So to remedy this, I have bought myself a new exhaust system... so much for not spending money on this car eh! Next up, I figured since I now had some spare time, I'd get the air filter out ready for this evening when my parts arrive so I can throw the new one in and button it back up. That also didn't go to plan, but this time it was my fault. As I started to take the filter housing out, I noticed it had not one, not two, but three resonators/sound-deadeners, one being MASSIVE! Before After I'd like a bit more noise from the car as it may as well be a hybrid currently, so I set about making myself an induction kit. I wasn't about to spend £150 on some tube and a cone from K&N, but what I do have is a 3" stainless intercooler pipe, some rubber bungs, and have ordered a Ramair filter. Without the cone on the end, it sounds much better as you would expect. A lick of paint and it should look quite smart when the filter turns up. And bonus cat Tonight I have a bunch of vacuum hoses to replace with nice new ones and a service to do. Still trying to decide on wheels, opinions welcome!

My catalytic converter had a flang at each end so it was super easy to swap it in and out for the decat come mot time.
