Correct me if Iโm wrong, but the ZF 22 autobox is overdriven in top isnโt it? 0.728:1? With 6.70 16 tyres, at 727mm dia, that would give you about 30mph/1000 rpm in top with the stock back axle, about 2400 rpm at 70mph, which sounds about ideal to me. Ashcroft Transmissions has a ratio calculator on their website: linky
Yes that's Right Glen , remember, diff is 4.09 i think , so i get 28.65 mph/1k rpm ,which is alright i suppose ,slight concern is the 22 is rated to 280 lbs/ft approx , and the 24 which i also have is bigger and more capable , however its controlled by ecu ,that needs some square wave signal for engine speed , and a engine ecu calced trq signal ,(it seems) so that may be a bit of a faff , whereas the transit 5 speed would be much simpler , except of course for having to make an adaptor to the jag block . I could just go with the 22 , and not raise engine power.....

Robert accepting you can never have enough power do you need 400hp for a comfy womfy touring car ? You have stupid power more than adequately covered... 200hp and a nice modern'ish auto would bring things up to respectable pace, perhaps within the limits of the old brakes etc. and might bring the build time down and be reliable ish ? Anyway thanks for keeping us mere mortals updated and involved on the sidelines. James

I have the 4ZFHP22 in both my Rover P5B (with the 3,5 V8) so this should not be a problem. I believe it is possible to swap some of the stronger components from the 24 to the 22. I also believe Ashcroft can supply an electronic unit, a kind of stand alone ECU for the 24

I also agree that a cumfy-wumfy gentlemanโs carriage should really be an auto. Particularly as the original transmission was auto so youโve got the added considerations of fitting levers, clutch pedals and the like. Furthermore, a gentleman either has both hands on the wheel (when pressing on) or has far more important things to do with his free hand than faff about swapping cogs (when travelling in a more relaxed manner).
Iโd have thought that 200 bhp of Jaaaag sixpot, and either of those gearboxes would really wake the old girl up when provoked, but still be smooooth, quiet and refined when bimbling about. Even if the 22 is getting near its limits, it would still get you going while you investigate the means to properly control the 24.
Anyway, Iโm sure youโll arrive at a fully thought through solution.

I've seen the 4hp22 take a fair bitbof abuse behind high capacity rv8's and survive, I think it would last well when driven in a gentlemanly manner with the odd need to gather pace rapidly. The stated capacity will be for 150,000 miles in something like a range rover including the ability to tow 3.5 tons up a mountain.

The 4hp24 in my XJ6 was the smoothest auto I've had the pleasure of driving (including the new 8 speed ZF), would be lovely for a gentleman's express.

Just a thought ref gearbox capacity, how does the kerbweight of The Temptress compare with the donor? If its a lot lighter then a lot of the load would be reduced ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ

its around 1550 kg Andy wit the honking heavy cast iron head and block engine , and the ridiculously heavy cast iron 4 speed hydramatic box .
my guess, with no foundation or quantum tenacity to the slightest vestige of truth ,would be engine at 500 lbs ,and gearbox at 380 lbs,,,
converted to foreign ,so thats 227 +112= 333 kg
1550 -333 =1217 kg
jag 160 kg + box 36 kg =196 kg + car 1217 kg = 1413 kg tot.

spec of the jag..
3.2 Litre Engine (cc) 3239 Bore and Stroke (mm) 91 x 83 Compression Ratio 10:1 BHP 219 @ RPM 5100 Torque (lb ft) 232 @ RPM 4500
xj40 3.2 aj16 ..
Weight (Cwt)35.4 (Short wheelbase) 1770 kg
3.2 Litre Top Speed 139 mph (138 manual) 0 - 60 mph 8.9 seconds (7.9 manual) Fuel Consumption 26.9 mpg
so it may not be too shabby with only the 3.2 and a de restricted exhaust and inlet.

it'd probably be more power that the rest of the car can take, but then that'd just make it more fun

Ok. If we alter the diff ratio to 4.09, that puts it at just under 30mph at 1000 rpm (30 is 1050rpm), and 2449 rpm at 70mph. Again, I may be wrong, but I think the jag would have been on 205/70 15s, at 675 mm dia, and with a 3.54:1 diff. That gives just over 30mph/1000 rpm in top. 2283 rpm at 70mph. Pretty comparable. The potential for under 9 seconds to 60 is fairly awesome, really. Obviously, if my googling of tyre sizes and diff ratios is erroneous, then so are my figures. A Land-Rover Salisbury axle is 3.54:1, and could be modified to fit Iโd imagine...

well the engine pistons moved 2mm today , so a bit of progress , i also found the ends of my crack ! my latest thinking is , if i braze or weld it , i would need to deck it ,, am i going to do that ..er.. no . so i think i will prob clean it up , jb weld it , bung it all together , silverseal the water , and see what happens , if it all goes pooh shaped i go jag , i can run it up till it pressurises ,and see if it leaks . i cheered myself up by putting in an hour or two on the grill , more trying to unstick the pistons tomorrow , if its not raining . regards robert

Robert - What headlights do you have on the car (if any) - I've found this one a Lucas PF770 with the Armstrong logo languishing in one of my Jupiter projects - it wont be getting refitted when I restore the car so its yours if you want it / retain for spare etc - happy to see go to good use -
