Thank you GNR ,and EO
gosh that sounds like an american train company ,the great national railway and eastern overland company
WELL today was a productive day and no mistake .
I wizzed aound witters and did my shop , then lunch ,and started on the saucy little temptress in the afternoon.
Foistly i hoofed the hose up there and poured a bit of h2o into the rad , ,and lo and behold it did not spring a leak ..good start.
then hooked up the astra and fired her up , vey easy to start now , as long as theres enough battery and i give it 3 pumps on the throttle.
more water went in ,and it was full ,and warming nicely .
NO SIGN OF BLOCK LEAKAGE !
next was time to get in and put it into gear .
clambered in , foot on the brake , and into drive .revs dropped by 200 rpm i estimate , so thats the fluid flywheel taking up the load , , i let my foot off the brake , and ...and....
she went forward , UNDER HER OWN STEAM ...for the first time in i guess 40 years .
MONSTROUSLY ExCITING... i may have guffawed .
i then put it in reverse , and nuffin .pox.
revved it a bit ,and it spat back and stopped running , this was ok , with no air filter , and cold engine and next to no choke , oh , and the float height being a couple of mm low , i was not bothered by it stopping .
i felt that the gear lever was not reaching the detent for reverse , so i climbed underneath , and found i could pull the arm on the bax back another inch ,and it clonked in , so the linkage may well be the problem , there is a stud it pivots on underneath , which has lost all its rubber bush , so its super sloppy.
Now my problem was getting the car back onto its boards ....
ever tried to push a 1.65 ton car on your own with 40 year old soft crossplies on it , up onto a load of 19mm thick wood boards ? no ?? well don't is my advice .
I managed to get her back with the old torque ratchet on the wheel nut ,while simultaneously pulling on the wing , but could i get the front tyres over that little wooden edge PPPPPFFTT ...could i heck as like .
i heaved and heaved , and the wheel kept turning ,so id turn it straight and try again . i tried rocking it and putting a wedge in the tyre ,nope .
i tried dragging out the small compressor and pumping up the tyres ...Nope.
in the end i had to drag out the heavy trolley jack , jack the whole front of the car up , and put planks under the tyres so they were level with the boards ..at last that did it and she was home for the night.
oh i did check the oil level with the car running, having been through the gears, apart from reverse , and it was 2mm above the low mark . i was a bit worried since after i moved it i checked the oil with the engine not running , and it was milky ,ugh ,i thought, water in there .
but then , when i checked it again with the engine running it was clear . so my guess is it got aerated with its first running experience and getting the air out of the oil ways .
video incoming .
