Thanks Owen, I am trying to do a bit everyday if i can. Well today i started to the boot hinge panel to wheel tub strengthener. I did one side which worked out ok, the other side despite putting a lot of effort in isn’t looking so good. Sooo tomorrow it’s choppity choppity and start again! I also have a couple of BIG holes on the parcel shelf to fill where someone has made a couple of holes for speakers. Now I shouldn’t really talk about other folks work but this looks like it was cut out with a blunt drill but and an axe! I will just fit a flat piece in the speaker holes of slightly thicker metal to maintain some strength. Here is the picture of one side of the strengthener fitted and the speaker holes. So that’s all for tonight, i am going to try and get something done tomorrow morning as the afternoon will be out as i am collecting my youngest grandson from school etc. Please feel free to comment etc, all the best, Norman

Great progress, I have seen some rough speaker cut outs in the past but that takes the biscuit!

Hi fogey, Yes everything is ok, I have lost my way a bit but will be back on it soon. I also took on some work related to the old daytime job but I may stop it as it’s taking up too much time. I am retired now and wonder how I had time to go to work. Hopefully have some updates soon, all the best, Norman

Well here we are again after a five week break from the car. I started stripping some paint off in preparation for primer. I am going to do inside the boot area and part of the rear wings. I will mask up as i go and try to get as much primed this week as i can. This will be another steep learning curve as I haven’t sprayed anything for donkeys years. Here are a couple of pics of today’s work. That’s all for now, please feel free to comment etc. I can tell my son i have posted something this week as he keeps looking. All the best, Norman

Hi Owen, Don’t say now the hard work starts, I thought I had done the hard stuff! I also hope it’s not going to be expensive either. I will be spraying this myself so hope to keep costs down.

What paint will you be using Norman? Cellulose or 2 pack?
Any questions just ask.
PS, great to see an update again.

Hurray!.....an update...I've been looking forward to this. You've tackled some tricky tasks on this car so far....so I'm sure you'll be fine with a primer gun. Its amazing how putting a bit of primer on can transform the project. I managed to get some primer on the truck a few weeks ago and the sense of believing that you're actually getting somewhere is great! Keep up the great work.....look forward to more updates. Dan

Hi guys, Thanks for the encouragement, Mark, I will probably use cellulose as it’s less dangerous. I did buy one of those six masks you linked previously. I haven’t decided on colours yet but it probably will be a two tone scheme. Mark, what’s the body filler that you use, I will need to get a big bucketful when i start the body ha ha. All the best, Norman

I'd advise you start with epoxy primer, it's massively improved my paintwork, it sticks well, doesn't absorb water and isn't an isocyanate which all make it perfect for longer term DIY restorations without the use of a paint oven or full respiratory kit.

Yes, I have some Lechler epoxy primer. I will see how that goes on with my lack of skills.

Today I managed to get some primer on, it’s not perfect but looks ok. I stripped and cleaned the new spray gun, then i put some gun wash through it to play around with the settings. The boot seal edges had some rust pitting on them so these were treated with hydrate 80 and lightly rubbed back. I didn’t have any tack cloths (they are on order) so after a good clean with the vacuum cleaner i wiped the areas down with rags soaked with thinners. Time to bite the bullet and mix some primer, i only mixed a small amount while i played around with the gun settings. Now it was time to apply the primer, this went ok and i only have one run mark. This was due to me going over one area too much. I will put the car on its side to give me better access inside the boot. Here are a few pics of today’s work. OK that’s it for today, don’t know if I will get back to it tomorrow as again I have other stuff on. Feel free to comment, offer advice etc, all the best, Norman

So glad you are using the Lechlar Epoxy, its amazing stuff.
don't wipe panels down with thinners - buy some 'panel wipe' degreaser instead as it leaves no residue and flashes off really fast (and its kinder to your hands/body as well).
I like Upol Smooth 7 as it's easy to use and is designed for deeper filler work so has a high bond strength and is quite flexible.
The other new filler I'm using is Evercoat Rage Gold, this is super smooth and excellent for finer filler work. Be sure to use enough hardener with this as it clogs sandpaper really bad if not enough is used & can stay soft. If mixed properly it sands like a dream.
I'd advocate a little foray into 2 pack paints - especially if you are paiting outside as its light years ahead of cellulose and a dream to use.
Try looking up Lechlar green Ti primer/filler. Use this over your epoxy and it fills all the minor imperfections, just block it down before topcoat.
If you don't know the tip, then pour a couple of buckets of water on the floor before painting (make sure not to splash the car!!) this massively reduces dust & debris in the paintjob.
