Todays update, i cut some plates and shaped them to close off the wheel tub. I firstly tacked them in place and then fully welded them. I had a grinding session but unfortunately missed some areas on the other side doh! Here are the pictures. I also treated the seat rear and part of the floor to some hydrate 80, only one coat on so far. I will try and get the second coat on over the weekend and maybe grind back the bits i missed. Here is a pic of the treated area. I have a couple of areas to tackle where the inner sill meets the floor and wheel tub. Both sides need some work here. I made a start to it today but don’t have pictures yet. The corners are awkward so i will need to make the repairs using a couple of pieces. I did get brushes today for one of my grinders, the inference was that they were genuine parts, there not. I had to modify the brush holders slightly to get them to go through. Anyhow one grinder back up and running. That’s it for tonight, hopefully have more updates over the weekend. Please feel free to comment or offer advice, all the best, Norman

Hi Norman, one of the jobs I like the least is grinding back the welds. Strangely though, my neighbour's hate it even more than I do! On the plus side, you can only hear them moaning once you've stopped the grinding.....so the more you do the less you'll hear them. Anyway, keep up the good work. Dan

OK here we go with today’s work. I didn’t spend long in the garage today. The first areas to be tackled are the rear of the inner sill to floor and wheel tub. I had to make one of the repair panels out if two pieces due to the complex shape. The plug weld holes will be done later when i repair the door step. The other side was straight forward, the welding isn’t pretty but will be fine when cleaned up. Here are a few pics showing the areas and repair panels. This area will be tackled when i can summon the strength to fit the door. The next area to tackle is the rear screen pillars, this is the worst side. I started to clean up the area to see what was required, it’s been “repaired” before. Yes low temperature welding, cardboard and body filler. The cardboard funnily enough was from an air sander box. The construction of this area is totally stupid, two layers of metal tapering to a 1mm gap at the bottom with nowhere for any moisture to escape until it has rotted a hole in the base. Anyway i cut a couple of pockets and treated the sound metal with hydrate 80. The other metal will be replaced. I also welded up a couple of holes which I had to chase a bit! Here are some pics of the mess. That’s it for the weekend, I don’t think I will do anything tomorrow. I will need to order gas on Monday as the needle is hardly lifting now. I don’t want to run the bottle till it doesn’t deliver as that will leave me stuffed! I need to have a grinding marathon inside the shell, clean it up and apply primer, that should cheer me up. As always feel free to comment or offer advice etc, all the best for now, Norman

Good work Norman. Lesser men (me) would have walked away a long time ago. Grinding really is a pain in the . But you’ve got this 👍🏻

Not much done in the garage today as i was cleaning the modern! I started it yesterday but had to keep stopping because of the snow! My modern has a lot of scratches on it some quite deep. My wife’s car also has a LOT of deep scratches on it. We can’t fathom how this has happened but anyway i set about mine with the polisher. I managed to get the most of the scratches out. My wife’s car is a work in progress as it has a lot of battle scars which were on the car when we bought it. Here is a pic of mine done, the marks on it are reflections. OK back to the heap, I didn’t get much done today. I decided to cut up a bit higher on the screen pillar to get to sound metal. I really don’t want to go any higher now as it will be difficult to get it back together straight. There is a u shaped channel inside the pillar which is spot welded to the inner and outer of the pillar. I have started to remove this piece and will fabricate a new piece tomorrow. I spent a lot of time looking at the way this was constructed before cutting anything out. I now have a plan, at least in my head. We shall see how it works out. Here are a few pics of where we are. Yes it’s pretty crusty in there but i will take it back to sound metal and make good. It’s a good job I didn’t get the shell chemically dipped and stripped as i would have been able to fold it in two and put it in a skip! Anyhow, i am on the home straight now. Please feel free to comment etc. All the best till the next instalment, Norman

It’s really hard to convey just how much this gives me the horrors. I take my hat off to you, seriously, because there’s no way I’d have taken this on. 👍👍👍

Hi Norman, that first windscreen pillar repair has turned out really well. I'm sure the other side will turn out just as good 👍
Dan.

Looks great Norman, you're doing really well.
The work you're having to do sure highlights how many rust traps / complexity was 'engineered' into it. No wonder there's hardly any left on the road.

Today i am glad to say that’s the other screen pillar finished. In the end i had to make up 11 repair panels yes 11 to make it all fit. I knew there was a lot of lead in the joints etc and a good dose of lead to get the door gaps decent. I attacked it with the gas torch and let the lead run off, it was about 7mm thick in places. I won’t be using lead but will use a bit of body filler. Here are a couple of pics of the finished area. The next area i am tackling is where the wheel tubs meet the boot floor in the boot if that makes sense. I am going to make a couple of “u” channels to fill the gap, i will just tack them in. Here are a couple of pics of the areas to be filled, the shell is vertical now so the pictures look like they are on there side. I also have to tie in the boot hinge support panel to the wheel tubs so will need to make up some brackets. I ran out of welding gas late this afternoon so I will need to organise some for tomorrow. Please feel free to comment etc, all the best, Norman

Hi Norman, great work as always. Those pillar repairs are spot on. Plus, with the car at that angle, it's clear to see just how well those wheel tubs went in. Top work all round I'd say 👍. Regards Dan.
