Good luck with the house move but you have broken the golden rule - the rest of us 'upsize' on the garage space when we move - but I'm sure that you have your own reasons - good luck regardless - Chris

Its good to get a recommendation for a chemical dipping process, I must be honest I am tempted and will see how much it costs. I could even be cheeky and get them to pic it up from my mums house then deliver it to the new one once we move, they are only 4 miles apart but it would save me the cost of moving it again as I don't currently have a suitable tow vehicle for a car trailer.
I have actually considered adding a towbar to this so I can use it for towing, I had one on my 1966 S-Type and it towed a car trailer really well as it was a heavy old beast!
The old 2.4 might struggle a bit but it would only be local work and I won't be in any rush.
Over on the Mig welding forum people often ask if one of the transformer Clarke Migs are any good for bodywork. In future I will just point them here. Really impressive work!
I can highly recommend them, this one must be over 15 years old and the only critism I have is that the torches they come with arn't much good.
After around 10 years and changing the end a couple of time (the bit that the tip screws into) I bought a better one off e-bay for around £30, I think its called an MB14 and its basically the next size up but not a Euro fittment.
It handles a 5kg reel of wire fine and I have a BOC size Y bottle of argoshield on it.
I've done loads of work with it and the main thing is as with all MIG's the cleaner the metal the better, even when old steel looks clean it still welds new steel to new steel better than old steel to new steel.
I've also done some thicker work with it but really anything over around 3mm is pushing it and if it was safety related (steering or suspension) I would use my mates bigger proffesional unit (which is also a Clarke one but with a Euro fitment torch).
I don't weld reguarly enough to get good at it though, when I used to do a lot more my welding was neater.
Talking of breaking golden rules, one of mine is not to bother with any of the mechanical components until the body is done (unless you have to so you can sort the body out).
I've seen far too many people who start to restore the mechanical bits, then look at the rusty shell, realise its too bad for them to do, do some more mechanical bits, buy some shiney stuff, have a look at the body again to see if its got better (which is hasen't), got a quote to have it done, realised its too much to spend and then put it in the garage few a few years before selling as an unfinished project.
Anyway, when the car arrived the engine was siezed so I put some diesel down the bores, the put the plugs back in and put the whole lot under the bench. When we realised we had an offer accepted on out house I started to think about how I would move the contents of the garage and one of the biggest items to move was the engine and gearbox from the Jag.
Anyone who has ever worked on these engines will know that they are heavy old lumps, especially with the gearbox on the back.
I thought it would be a good idea to split the engine and gearbox to make it easier to move, then curiosity got the better of me and the next thing I knew the head was off and it was on my engine stand.
I removed the sump, undid the conrods and took out the crank and tried to move the pistons. It was clear that all the cylinders had suffered water ingress and one had a strange crystal like substance in it which I wondered if it might be old anti-freeze.
I tried putting other things in the bores to see if it would help but nothing worked, I even built a small fire in one of the cylinders to see if the heat would have any effect which of course it didn't.
The only way I was able to do this was to tap the pistons down the bores with a block of wood, clean off the worst of the crud and then tap them out from under neath with a bar on the back of the piston (so as not to damage the con-rods).
At this stage it was clear that a rebore and new pistons would be required so it didn't really matter but I did try not to smash the pistons, however, I was unsuccesful on a couple.
Now the dilema is what to do, its the original engine so I really want to keep it but it costs as much to rebuild a 2.4 as a 3.4 or 3.8 as the work involved is the same but a 2.4 is practically worthless. I reckon I won't get much change out of £1500 for a full rebuild so I don't really know what to do. Running 2.4 engines seem to go for around £300-£600 and I would generally assume most would tend to be ok as they get removed and replaced with larger units.
I will have to wait and see how things go when I get to that stage, at the moment its all covered in grease and moved down to the garage at my mums which its sharing with a 1974 spitfire (also in bits).
Running 2.4 sounds like a plan then ! You could always set up a out of engine compression test set with a starter battery and some cable. Most engines advertised seem to have been running well when removed..... Hope the move comes together ok. We are living in interesting times for sure at the moment. James
Personally I think in time to come a Mk2 with original numbers will be more desirable because they're becoming scarcer. If you're going to keep the car I would invest in the engine, but if you're going to flip it then it doesn't really matter just get it running with another block

3.8s 87mm pistons had liners in the block [3.8s amd 4.2s are taller blocks] but I wonder if you can get away with the 87mm pistons in your short block
I can get pistons for the 2.4 and having looked they arn't that much more than the 3.4 and 3.8's, the issue is that the cost of rebuilding any XK engine is pretty much the same but the 2.4 has next to no value whereas the 3.4 and 3.8 are worth a lot even for rebuild.
I had hoped that the pistons would have come out and I could have cleaned the bores up, put in some new rings and seen how it went as its not going to do huge mileage, sadly this isn't an option as the bores are heavily pitted and some of the pistons are now in bits!
Thanks for the link, I did look at this one as its only about 15 miles from me, sadly I don't have the cash at the moment and I do really want a 2.4 (i'm strange I know!).
Also as an aside but not necessary the right reason to base the decision on, I bought a stainless exhaust for 2.4 on e-bay as one of the first purchases after buying the car so if I go for a bigger engine I would need to sell this and buy another one.
