This was my first ever car. I would have been about 13/14. It was discovered in a barn near Dartmoor on a farm along with a Morris minor and a vanden Plas 1100 by a friend of my dad's while exploring his late father's estate. I paid £60 for it and it was mine. The TA in KTA577V being an Exeter registration, it turned out it had lived most of its life a few streets away from me in St Thomas, Exeter. The original reg plate was BMW 500V, which as you can imagine had been sold many years ago. Swindon reg apparently. Getting it out of the barn was a struggle as the wheels were stuck and tyres wouldn't hold air. So we took the wheels, painted them and fitted new tyres and then came back, freed the handbrake and refitted the wheels. Now, the muddy slope outside the barn was on a hill and wasn't wide enough to get the trailer head on, so we needed to roll the mini out of the barn, turn right downhill and onto the trailer. I remember this next bit vividly. It was decided that dad and his mate would be outside ready to push/catch the car and I would be driving. So I got into the dog eaten drivers seat and was then pushed out of the barn. Before they'd got to the front of the car to slow it down, I'd hopped the wooden chock we'd left out, turned right and was gathering speed down the hill. I pressed the brake, the pedal went to the floor and stayed there. No brakes. Pulled the handbrake. Nothing Luckily for me the engine was seized and the clutch worked so I was able to put it in gear and use the clutch as a brake. I managed to stop just short of the trailer. Good parenting eh! Anyway we got it on, the Granada managed to tow it out of the roughest farm track in Devon and we drove home, with the clutch going halfway back to Exeter. We made it though. And then it was home. I remember immediately washing the 20 years of dust and grime off it and wondering, how the hell do I fix this? I stripped it back to the bare shell, carefully labelling everything with the view of using it as my first car. I got as far as removing the front end, which turned out to be hiding some accident damage. It had had a front end shunt at some point in its life and new wings and front panel slapped on badly. I ended up buying a working mini once I passed my test and the green one got pushed to the sidelines. And that's sort of its story over the last 17 years. I'd work on it and then I'd change jobs or move house or buy another car and it would end up falling to the bottom of priorities. Now I have my own house with my own garage and this little mini that has followed me all round the country, the thing that started off all this car nonsense is now finally going to get done

So what's been done so far/what needs doing FrontFront end removed, crash damaged inner wings cut back for flip front. LH scuttle corner repaired Side
New door step, inner sill, sill reinforcers/jacking point, outer sill, a-post, a panel, filch, front floor panel, rear side bin closing panel, rear subframe mounting point on heel board. A repair needs redoing in front of the rear wheel arch, where I'd sanded it too thin before and went through. A lesson learnt there! That's as far as I've got in dribs and drabs over the years. rear
Boot floor was rotten and has been cut out. Repairs to the floor just in front of the heel board have been done Poor picture but the lower lip of the rear panel needs replacing The bolts for mounting the rear subframe are sheared and there's rust in it. Replace as per the other side. The same with the panel above it.

I'm in for this one! Love the fact it'll need a fair bit doing to it - I love to watch a Mini taking shape again. As with many of us that had Minis as our first cars, my 1977 1000 went off to the scrappy after I'd sold it. I would love to have it back today. I loved the centre speedo and the fact it went round corners like a go kart despite cheap tyres and old dampers. Obviously added wider wheels (reverse rims!) and S discs but it never got more power. However it was pretty rotten by the end. My MOT failure sheet was hilarious - they even failed it on the petrol cap not unlocking because the spare set of keys didn't have the petrol cap key on the ring... It did have a cool sticker though...

mrbounceThat is a cool sticker! Looks like your behind another mini too. They're great first cars. I do have these slightly embarrassing photos of the orange one I learnt to drive in, taken by my Nan, down in Starcross. Me and my younger brother used to drive down there quite often as there were a few really quiet roads to blat down. Life before smartphones meant I don't have a lot of pics DV being a Devon reg, I bought this 1980 1000 from Ipplepen, just past Newton Abbot. Arrived in the evening, in the rain and bought a rotter lol. 600 flippin quid! It had had a vinyl roof at some point in the 80s and was rotten all along and under the guttering, down the upper a-pillars and just about everywhere else. The green shell was actually a lot better. But it was an absolute hoot. Wide 10" gemini alloys on falken tyres, Astrali 4 spoke steering wheel and that centre speedo. Learnt a lot on that car. Ended up cutting it up on the drive, coming up to its second mot (with me) as it was far too rotten to do. I never scrapped it and still have the vin, doors, engine and everything else. I'd like to reshell it one day, maybe a fibreglass sprint shell

£600? Positively rich! I paid £250 for mine in 1993... The sticker was thanks to my brother. I had mentioned that it would be cool to have a sticker with that line from the film on it and he got one made for my birthday as a surprise. Diamond geezer - especially as he didn't have much cash at the time. If it's embarrassing early 90s pics, then...

I could only dream of getting a working mini for 250 in 2006! They were already getting expensive by then.
I only had 550 in my post office account so had to borrow 50 quid from Dad. Mum wasn't happy that I'd emptied my post office account as that money had been left to me by Big Nana and was meant to go towards a first house deposit later in life. Naaaa, bright orange mini FTW!
My mates had 1996ish fiestas and clios etc. Much quicker than my mini in a straight line but on the twisty Devon b roads they couldn't get near
There must be more people with embarrassing old mini photos. Get 'em up! 😉

I had MG Metros as my first 2 cars whereas my mate had an orange Mini 1000. He used to wring the neck of that poor car but it was a nippy little thing. Even when 4 up with sparks occasionally flying off the exhaust as it bottomed out.

Even when 4 up with sparks occasionally flying off the exhaust as it bottomed out. I once heroically overtook a yellow Lamborghini Diablo, 4 up in this down an extremely steep bit of dual carriageway known as telegraph hill. The speedo was bouncing between 90mph and 3/4 of a tank of fuel, absolutely screaming, when the head gasket went, spraying steam all over the windscreen. There was a short slip-road at the bottom of the hill and I had to put both feet on the brakes to slow it (drums all round) before the sharp left. Coasted to a stop, had a look. The brake fluid was hissing out the cap and there was naff all coolant. Found a stream, topped it up and drove home. That copper head gasket had a habit of re-sealing itself whenever I overdid it 😂

I've ordered a new boot floor including the battery box. Hope it's good quality, it cost enough. Apparently done on the last pressings so will have injection pipe holes that'll need welding up. I was going to spend the day stripping some surface rust off the bottom but my angle grinders packed up. I don't think it like the dust from when I was cutting bricks up. So I've rolled it onto some tyres to assess and mark up what needs cutting out. The lower lip will be staying until I've fitted the floor and will aid in lining it all up There's loads of holes from drilling spot welds. Most of these will be opened up to 7/8mm and used to plug weld to the new boot floor. The rear wheel tub looks much worse than it is. Minor surface putting all over but it's a decent thickness so will be repaired rather than replaced. Everything cross hatched will be replaced. Again with the floor, most of it is surface rust and flaking original paint. No underseal anywhere. Sills will be replaced And I'll be ordering a genuine inner sill this time so it actually matches the flutes in the outer sill 😡 I've ordered new Brushes for my angle grinder but I'm not convinced that these have run out. The communicator looked really burnt. Cutting bricks might have been a bit much for it. It was still running, just throwing out sparks with naff all power I've cleaned them up with a fibreglass pen and repacked the gears with new grease. Shall see what happens.

Mate is a manager in euro car parts, when my grinder gave up the ghost, after years off good service he ordered me 2 good quality grinders with 10ft leads. Always better to have a back up. 2 grinders £80 very powerful with slow start. Then I got discount on the price

They sound like beasts. I was thinking of getting a second one anyway so I can have one with a cutting disc and one with a sanding disc. Do you you know what make/model they are?

ivangt6 to butt in on your conversation, I can recommend a budget one from personal use: www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-115mm-45-angle-grinder-230v/It's an absolute beast with a hell of a kick and I haven't been able to kill it in 7 years' usage. I had a budget one and it went bang after 13 months. I asked the guy behind the counter what he'd recommend given my limited budget and he said "This one - we've never had one back".

Liking it Applejack green ? Very cool colour, hope you’re gonna keep it It is applejack. I was toying with changing the colour over the years. Was thinking smoke or tweed grey or a Ford colour called lagoon blue. I saw this a few weeks ago though and I really think it should stay applejack. Maybe with a black roof though
