skodaciousI should think a fair amount of the cars strength is in the roof. Its spot welded to the guttering but that is it. There's no cross bracing or anything, it's just a skin. I'd like to properly check that seam anyway as the guttering can hold a lot of water. I'm not going to be buying these panels all in a oner due to the cost. It'll be a case of getting one or two a month. There are other repairs and paint stripping I can be getting on with as well I love a 70s mini this makes me miss my 72 clubman I never got finished! Wasn't the last panel to be fitted the roof? Could you not get these small holes lead filled if the rest isn't bad? Saves cutting it all off

Before I forget, these are the Altissimo rear lights I restored years ago. They're lighter than the usual Lucas ones and have a different lense pattern Compared to a Lucas one. A BL one at that. And lastly, in the interim years I also restored the instrument cluster. It's just rolling over to 60k

So should be simple to drill out and put the new one in then. I was wondering about having to brace the shell before you taken the roof off to keep everything aligned. It feels like a big chunk to remove but then I haven't ever done it!

skodaciousEither way at £500 it'll be one of the last jobs to get done. Maybe I'll be able to get a body chop from a scrap car that's useable

So I've just been browsing ebay and apparently these rear lights were used on the Inoccenti Cooper 's' cars. Aka they're possibly worth a fair bit. I prefer the glass mk3 lights anyway so maybe I should sell these and buy some more panels. Or do we think ebay is being misleading with the value of these things? 🤔 Opinions? The ones going for 350 quid look like they're held together with wood screws and don't even have the proper plug

ivangt6 go into the advanced search and take a look at the sold items - this will tell you the sort of prices that are more realistic.

Nothings coming up other than the ones going for 505 previously going for 470 and the auction ending. A Google search isn't coming up with any for sale either other than the ones on ebay

Sounds like they're either ridiculously rare and never come up for sale or they don't sell at inflated prices.

With the roof skin could you not just cut out the old one up to where the lip is then grind the lip and spot weld over that? Would save having drill every spot weld and it would be thicker metal to weld to

Sounds like they're either ridiculously rare and never come up for sale or they don't sell at inflated prices. Yeah I can find little bits like lenses and stuff but no whole units. And to be fair the ones on ebay aren't perfect. Mine are as new. No marks, perfect chrome and new gaskets. I'm pretty sure that I got the light units with no lenses as new old stock in the blue British Leyland boxes. I should have kept them. The lenses were brand new and the last one of the big mini spares shops had along with the new gaskets. The units are slightly different to the lucas ones and you can't fit lucas lenses to altissimo body's or Viceversa. If they are worth a bit it would help out with the project massively. Not sure if I can even post anything at the moment though

Would save having drill every spot weld and it would be thicker metal to weld to I could do but given the rot in that roof skin where its spot welded to the guttering, I'd want to completely remove it to expose any potential rust hiding underneath. I find drilling spot welds out a fairly quick process, they're fairly well spaced apart

So today was earmarked for doing the boring job of flatting down plug welds and seam sealing. This is the underside of the back-rest showing the penetration I was getting. Good penetration but a fair bit of grinding I'd forgotten a couple of bits inside the boot and this welded seam in front of the LH wheel arch. This is a welded seam from the factory so I didn't grind it down afterwards With those final bits of welding done and grinding done I could crack open the seam sealer And in the boot And the back seat. Seam sealed the lip underneath the seat but only got as far as hitting some hydrate 80 onto the seam at the bottom of the seat-back. The rest of the day was spent ordering wood to make a carport as SWMBO has decided we need to be cracking on with the t25 which is currently outside. She's even bought a new front quarter panel for it. I'll document the carport build in my garage thread and then it looks like the bus thread will be making some progress Work will not stop on the mini though. There's plenty to be cracking on with without forking out loads of money

Today's job. First a cardboard template Mark out onto steel After the first couple of folds the metal started to curve. This is good as the panel subtly curves in all axis. When bashing over the other fold it started curving the wrong way. I had to hammer the hell out of that folded edge to stretch it. It now has a bend matching its opposite edge The car was measured, cut and prepped for the new piece. Somehow I managed to cut it wrong leaving a bigger gap than I'd like. Carefully sanded back as far as I can without thinning the surrounding areas. And done for now. I did pick up a warp due to the heat of having to weld a larger than ideal gap. I've dressed most of it out and it'll be getting a skim of filler anyway Next bit Not the most productive of days but I had a lot of deliveries arrive today so had disruptions. And I did do a load more seam sealing. Those are my excuses anyway!

*Disclaimer* - I haven't actually done a lot, this is more of an update to work out my best way forward. Most of my time over the weekend was taken up by a large erection. I had wood all weekend. Wood that needed a good lick of paint. That's right I've been putting up fence. Partly to keep this little a**hole away from the postman and partly to make our back garden a bit more private. But mainly to stop said a**hole chasing the b***dy cat onto my car. Also I've been hanging my bell outside but were getting away from the point now I know what I need for the boot now. Will start ordering bits as and when. I'm still not decided on whether to order genuine or pattern bits at this point. Or a mix of the two In the meantime I've been stripping my wheel arch. It's a slightly thicker gauge than the bodywork. And there is some pitting but nothing deep so I'm saving myself some hassle and keeping the majority of it This is what were dealing with I've given it a good dose of bilt hamber hydrate 80 I did have a go at making this area but failed miserably. Due to the amount of curvature it's beyond what I can do with a hammer and dolly without resorting to cutting and welding it into some sort of frankenstein monster. A magnum pattern wheel tub is about 30 quid plus postage so I'm going to order one of those and cut out the front and rear to sort these areas More as and when. I hope everyone's doing OK

And lastly, in the interim years I also restored the instrument cluster. It's just rolling over to 60k If the mileometer is rolling over to 60,000 then its either a co-incidence or the mileometer is stuck. Its fairly common on these old mini speedos for them to get stuck when rolling over all the digits due to the extra work involved in moving all the digits at the same time. Best thing to do is try winding it on with a drill and if it isn't moving over then you will need to take it to bits and move it over manually (or send it to someone to rebuild as it may just get stuck on the next big mileage change).

It's a possibility. The last mot shows 58999 so it either did 1000 miles between its last mot and being layed up in a barn or the mot reading is possibly wrong and it was stuck on 59999 for the mot and just misread. I guess I'll find out when it gets finished. I do have a spare working odo if it is stuck to Rob parts from

The first job of the day was to make the double leg clips that hold the brake/fuel lines to the rear heel board. Both sides done and sealed. One thing I could do with finding out, if anyone could have a look at their mini for me, is if there are additional clips missing from the boot floor as I can't remember what's supposed to be there. There's two dimples in the pressing marked in orange. I'm thinking these might be two more double leg clips for brake/fuel lines. The ones marked in green I think might be single leg clips inside the boot for the tail light wiring. One thing I never got round to doing on the floor was replacing the slinging shoes. These are little brackets tacked to the floor that attached the shell to the conveyor system in the factory. As per this pic from the production line These are the remains of the shoes on the rh side. They're a bit of a rust trap and a lot of people leave them off when restoring the floors. I'm going to replace them. You can buy these but I've got time so thought I'd save myself a few quid Rear lh side And front lh side That done I cracked on with a job I've been putting off. Stripping back the rh floor to bare metal. A filthy job but here we are. Just some light putting for the most part. Treated with some hydrate 80 Thats all for today
